CHAPTER THREE
General introduction:
I was introduced to the various lecturers that would be taking us on the SWEP program. I
was shown round the engineering workshop where I was introduced to the machines in the
workshop present at various sections. I was taught the uses, importance and maintenance
of these machines. Some of the machines include; the lathe machine, filling and drilling
machine, bench vice, arc welding machine. I was also taught on safety in the engineering
workshop.
1. I was introduced to the carpentry and woodwork section of the workshop where Mr.
Barri the supervisor in charge of the section introduced me to several carpentry
machines and tools in the section. He talked on the uses and importance of these
machines and tools. These machines and tools include; bench vice, plane machine, saw
machine, hand drill machine, claw hammer, saw, plane, sand paper.
2. I was taken to the faculty where I and my group members under the supervision of Mr.
Barri covered the statue of the Lady of Justice using ply boards that were cut to specific
sizes and some carpentry machines and tools such as the hand drill machine, claw
hammer, saw.

WEEK TWO: Welding and Fabrication Section
1. I was introduction to some of the various machines used in welding and fabrication and
their uses. Some of these machines include; air compressor, arc welding machine, pillar
drill machine, gas cylinders, bench vice, electric hand cutting machine, work-bench,
electrodes and electrode holder.
2. I learnt the basic welding techniques for example; tacking and sparking. Learnt how to
turn on a welding machine and use a welding machine properly, such as regulating the
current flowing through the electrode and making sure the earth wire always has a
direct contact with the metal to be welded.
3. I practiced how to weld properly. We were given some bed bunk frames to fix together
by welding. I was also introduced to the cutting machine used for cutting metals.
4. I learnt how to use the air compressor to spray paint on work piece for colouring. I used
the air compressor to spray a metallic shelf that was previously welded.
13 | P a g e
I was taught how to identify various machines and tools in the workshop and their functions
like; the bench vice which is used to hold work piece together, the lathe machine which I used
for cutting and designing work piece, the drilling machines (pillar drilling machine and the table
drilling machines) which is used to make holes in work piece, grinding machine which is used to
grind or sharpen edges of work piece and work tools, chisel and hack saw used for filing and
cutting work piece.
1. I carried out cutting and filing a metal into a square-shape work piece and an opener
with specific measurement.
2. I was introduced to the lathe machine, its various components such as the head stock,
the tail stock and the carriage (the carriage consist of the tool post, the compound slide
and the cross slide), operation of the lathe machine and safety precautions to be taken
when operating a lathe machine.
3. I learnt how to do the step turning and face turning or facing on work piece (a cylinder-
shaped metal).
4. I was taught how to read the calibrations on the lathe machine. I was also taught that
chamfering is a means to reproduce the sharp edge of a work piece.
5. I was instructed to work as a group to do a fitting job which was to produce the male
and female components of a substance using the lathe machine where we successfully
carried it out.
14 | P a g e
1. I was introduced to various electrical machines and appliances in the Electrical lab and
their uses such as; the oscilloscope, voltmeter, amp meter, clamp meter, solar panel,
battery and inverter, digital tachometer. I was also taught the different types of load
banks which are; resistive loads, capacitive loads and the inductive loads. . I was then
given an assignment to list all the electrical in each of my house make a load calculation
and recommend generator rating in KVA for my house.
2. Introduction to solar panel and inverter, types of battery used for solar energy and types
of solar panel which are; the Monocrystalline silicon, Polycrystalline silicon solar panel,
thin-film solar panel.
i. The monocrystalline silicon solar panel: is the best type of solar panel as it has
higher conversion efficiency which means that they produce more KW/hour of
electricity. This is because it is composed of single silicon crystals which allow
more space for the electrons to move. Monocrystalline solar panels display
higher heat resistance, which means that their electricity production capacity is
less affected by heat and they produce electricity at a higher efficiency at higher
temperature. They are also more expensive.
ii. The polycrystalline silicon solar panel: can be identified by the square shape of
the cells and shining blue hue of with straight edges. Poly crystalline solar panels
have lower efficiency as they are composed of multiple silicon crystals due to
which there is limited room available for the electrons to move. These solar
panels are more affordable than the monocrystalline solar panel.
iii. The thin-film solar panel: Are manufactured using photovoltaic substances
which include amorphous silicon (a-Si), copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS).
This solar panel is easy to install as it is light and flexible. It is also most suitable
for places with wide open space. It is less efficient compared to the silicon solar
panels.
3. I was taught the components of an extension box and how to make and set up an
extension box. I was then placed in a group and asked to set up an extension box.
4. I was taught how to install a CCTV camera. CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television. The
CCTV camera is connected to a power supply as it uses D.C to operate. The BNC is used
to connect wires from both ends of the camera and the power supply to ensure that the
camera works. The views of the cameras are positioned and tested using a video screen.
There are two types of CCTV camera; the Dome camera (indoor camera) and the Bullet
camera (outdoor camera).
My group and I then installed a dome camera in the TETFUND building.
15 | P a g e
5. I was taught the types of wiring which are; the Surface and Conduit wiring system.
Explanation of both types of wiring and the reason why the conduit wiring system is
commonly used than the surface wiring system. I was shown a model house wiring and
how it was wired.
6. I was taught that in A.C wiring, there are only live and neutral. But for D.C wiring, there
is positive, negative and earth and that polarization should be taken note of when
wiring. Red and brown wires mean live, blue and black means neutral, yellow and green
means earth.
7. At the universities E-library I was taught how to upload PDF files on the universities
portal. I was then given the task of uploading some PDF files on broadcasting and
mechatronics to the universities portal.
I was introduced to the automobile section where I was shown various parts of an automobile
such as; engine, engine block, stirring tank, span plug, alternator, turbo charger, and radiator. I
was also taught the different functions and maintenance of the various parts of the engine. I
participated in working on an engine.
1. I was taught the procedure of removing and coupling the top cylinder of an engine. I
was also taught how to use tools like the wrench, ring spanner, combination spanner,
flat spanner, hand socket, socket pipe e.t.c. I learnt how to disassemble the half-engine
16 | P a g e
before repair and was also able to distinguish various parts of the engine for example;
the engine cover, top-gasket, tubes, valves, springs and some gears.
2. I changed the gasket of an engine by removing the top cover of the engine. I was then
shown the sleeve and piston of the engine.
3. I was taught the factors that can cause water and oil to mix in an engine for example a
bad gasket. I was taught how to remove and fix the engine belt and air filter of an
automobile.

DURATION: 18th Sep. – 21thSep.
We were asked to revisit to the different sections of the engineering workshop to carry out
various activities.
1. I went to the carpentry and woodwork section where I was taught the process of
coupling wood compartments that has already been cut into specific sizes together to
produce engineering drawing tables. I was then given the task of making drawing tables.
The tools and materials I used to make the drawing table are; ply wood, hand drill, plane
machine, edge tape, sand paper, angle bars.
2. I went to the welding and fabrication section, where I joined a group to produce
charcoal pot by tacking and welding.

4.3 SAFETY MEASURES AND INFORMATION:
There were some basic criteria put in place to prevent fatality, accident and death in the
engineering workshop:
Always put on your Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) before entering the
workshop. These P.P.E include; lab coat or coverall, safety boots, hand gloves, eye
goggles, helmet, ear muff.
Always listen carefully to the instructor and follow instructions.
Do not operate any machine unless you have been shown how to operate it safely by
your instructor.
Use hand tools carefully, keeping both hands behind cutting edge.
Know where the emergency stop buttons are positioned in every machine.
Bags should not be brought into the workshop as people could trip over them.
Do not run or rush in the workshop, always be patient.
Keep hands away from moving or rotating machinery
Report any damage to machines and equipment as this could prevent the occurrence of
accident.
