Seminar four Assignment

Q1. Summarise in your own words these key concepts in youth leadership;

• The Youth leader as a friend

• The youth leader as a mentor
• The youth leader as a Spiritual leader

Leadership is the ability of an individual or a group of people to influence and guide

followers or members of an organisation, society or team.

A leader is someone who inspires passion and motivation in followers. A leader is someone
with a vision and the path to realising it. A leader is someone who ensures their team has
support and tools to achieve their goals.

So, in youth leadership, there are a few key roles to keep in mind.
First up, we have the youth leader as a friend. This means being approachable, supportive,
and creating a bond of trust with the youth group. Youth are significantly influenced by their
friends. This is why it's important to have youth leaders who can model what it means to be a
good friend to the youth.

Next, we have the youth leader as a mentor.

This involves guiding and advising the youth, sharing experiences, and helping them develop
skills and confidence. A person who gives a younger or less experienced person help and
advice over a period of time, especially at work or school is a mentor.

Lastly, there's the youth leader as a spiritual leader. This role involves providing spiritual
guidance, fostering a sense of community, and helping the youth explore and deepen their
faith.
As they draw near to christ. His purpose is to turn the youth away from their self-
centeredness and sinful desires, and to draw them into a relationship with Himself. The key to
spiritual leadership, then, is for spiritual leaders to understand God's will for them and their
organisations.

By embodying these roles effectively, a youth leader can create a positive and enriching
environment for the youth group to grow and thrive together.

Q2. In a practical situation as a youth leader, how best can you handle a child who has
been over pampered by parents and always see himself/herself superior above his/her peers in
the youth

Dealing with a child who has been over-pampered and sees themselves as superior can be a
delicate situation. As a youth leader, it's important to approach this with empathy and
understanding. One way to handle this is by fostering a sense of equality and teamwork
within the youth group.

You could create activities that promote collaboration and teamwork, where every member's
contribution is valued. Encourage the child to participate in group activities that require
cooperation and emphasise the importance of respecting everyone's ideas and abilities.

Additionally, you can have one-on-one conversations with the child to understand their
perspective and gently guide them towards recognising the value of humility and empathy.
By setting a positive example yourself and reinforcing positive behaviours within the group,
you can help the child understand the importance of treating others with respect and kindness.
It's all about creating a supportive and inclusive environment for everyone to thrive.

Q3. The youth department of your local church is deciding to go on excursion. After several
minutes of discussions, half of the youth want to visit the zoo and the other half wants to visit
the airport. How can you as a youth leader convince the two groups to come into agreement
to decide on one site without having the other group being offended as losers in their choice
of site?

Well, as a youth leader, One way to approach this situation is to emphasise the positive
aspects of both options to each group. You could highlight the educational and exciting
aspects of visiting the zoo, like learning about different animals and conservation efforts. At
the same time, you can talk about the unique experiences of visiting the airport, such as
seeing airplanes up close and learning about air travel.

Then, you can suggest a compromise where the group could perhaps visit both locations on
different days or combine elements of both trips into one excursion. This way, everyone gets
to enjoy aspects of what they wanted. Encouraging open communication and understanding
between the two groups can help them see the benefits of each option and come to a mutual
decision without anyone feeling like a ‘loser’ It's all about finding common ground and
creating a positive experience for everyone involved.
