[A’kin] Shampoo
The [A’kin] shampoo range works differently from most other shampoos. Our sophisticated combinations of
cleansers leave your hair feeling beautiful and extra clean, whilst retaining the essential natural oils and
moisture. Many other shampoos use harsh sulphate, ethoxylated and petrochemical cleansers which
excessively strip the hair of its own moisture and then re-surface the hair shaft with synthetic chemical coating
agents in an effort to replace lost shine and body. As [A’kin] shampoos do not re-coat the hair, a conditioner is
always recommended to get the most from your wash.
All [A’kin] shampoos are very similar to the skins natural pH, making them as mild as possible on your skin

Hair conditioners should function effectively in two main ways - to detangle, and to nourish. Detanglers are
present in all conditioners - however many detangling ingredients can be quite irritating. Our conditioners
feature a new generation GMO free rapeseed oil derived detangler that has proven superior detangling ability
and is unequalled in its mildness to both your skin and eyes.
Nourishing ingredients are vitally important in any quality conditioner. [A’kin] conditioners feature generous

Why formulated specifically for men?

Men’s skin differs from women’s. It is twice as oily, has larger pores where bacteria gets trapped, can be more
irritable due to shaving, dehydrates easily and has 50% more blood flow. We have selected active ingredients and
developed formulas targeting these important differences.
What are the unique ingredients?

Each of the [A’kin] PureMAN products contain specially selected active ingredients from botanical sources.
The formulations include naturally derived cleansers such as panama bark and a synergistic blend of 5 cleansers
derived from coconut and plant botanicals, which are extremely gentle yet thoroughly cleansing for fresh, clean
skin and hair. The powerful soothing benefits of aloe vera as well as pro vitamin B5 will assist in calming skin
sensitivities and irritations. Soften and restore skin moisture with natural moisturising factors (NMFs) such as
hydrolysed oats, hyaluronic acid, olive extract and aloe vera. The gentlest exfoliants such jojoba beads and

The anti-oxidant benefits of white tea and vitamin E as well as anthyllis flower extract will help protect the skin

Q: Why do you not use Sulfates & why are they bad?
A: Sulfates are used in cosmetic products as cleansers and foam boosters. These
ingredients are strong in cleansing power, very low in cost and are also highly irritating.
Sulfates have been linked to dry, itchy scalp, dandruff, corrosion of the hair follicles and
damage to the eyes. People with skin sensitivities like to use [A’kin] shampoos, due to
the blend of 6 gentle botanical cleansers, which help hair and skin feel more luxurious
and cleansed without stripping of the hair’s natural oils.

Q: Why do [A’kin] shampoos use a blend of six different cleansers?

A: Different cleansers remove different types of dirts, oils and waxes. Usually, you will
find a blend of 2 to 3 cleansers in most shampoos. By using a blend of six different
cleansers, [A’kin] shampoos are able to remove a broader spectrum of dirts, oils and
waxes, which means build-up is less likely to occur. Less build-up means healthier,
beautiful hair and less need to change shampoos. This blend of cleansers is also tailored
to each hair type, so you will notice a difference in each shampoo. For example, the
Ylang Ylang Colour Care Shampoo has a creamier lather that is mild on colour treated
hair and the Lemongrass Shampoo for oily hair has a deep cleansing, higher foaming
formulation
Q: Why do you not use Parabens & why are they bad?
A: Parabens are the most commonly used preservative in cosmetic and toiletry products.
They are also the most common ingredient (apart from water) in personal care products
and are present in high concentrations. Research has shown that parabens mimic
estrogen and may lead to increased risk of developing cancer.
Parabens are not used in any products created by The Purist Company.
Q: If you do not include parabens in your formulations, how do you preserve

the [A’kin] products?
A: We use a “hurdle” approach to preservation where various strategies are used to
preserve the product and prevent the growth of organisms. These strategies include the
use of BP grade (pharmaceutical quality) water, preservative “enhancers” (eg food grade
glyceryl laurate), pH, water availability, the use of antimicrobial essential oils and
avoiding ingredients (such as honey) which are difficult to preserve. This enables us to
use very low preservative levels. We also use a combination of the safest preservatives
which creates a synergy effect allowing us to use lower levels of preservative overall.
Q: Why is Propylene Glycol used in cosmetics, and is it safe?

A: Propylene glycol is present in many cosmetics and toiletries. It is used to prevent
creams from drying out and is used in deodorants to give it its characteristic slip.
Propylene glycol, is a petrochemical derivative, a primary irritant and has been known to
cause contact hypersensitivity.
Propylene Glycol is not used in any products created by The Purist Company.

Q: I have sensitive skin and scalp, which products should I use?
A: For sensitive skin and scalp, The Purist Company recommends products within the
Pure Therapy range or the Unscented range as these products are formulated with no
fragrance and soothing actives to help calm the skin. The Unscented shampoo and body
wash products also contain anti-irritant cleansers and moisturising actives. The products
suitable for sensitive skin in the [A’kin] skin care range are: Creamy Cleanser & Toner
In One, Pure Hydrating Rose Mist, Pure Radiance Rosehip Oil, Unscented 24 Hour Pure
Moisture, Unscented Pure Emergency Gel as well as the Unscented Body Moist,
Unscented Hand, Nail & Cuticle Treatment and Lemon Myrtle Hand Wash.
The products suitable for sensitive scalps in the [A’kin] hair care range are: Unscented
Very Gentle Shampoo, Unscented Wheat Free Conditioner and Intensive Moisture
Vitamin Masque.
Q: I have Eczema, which products should I use?

A: Eczema is a chronic inflammatory condition of the upper layers of the skin. The most
common things that will trigger eczema are allergies, both food and environmental, as
well as emotional and physical stress and climatic changes. The three main common
features of eczema that distinguish it from other ailments are dry skin, sore rash and
itchiness.
For eczema sufferers, The Purist Company recommends the Pure Therapy range of skin
and hair care products that has been specially designed with skin conditions in mind.
Q: Why does my Rosehip Oil look different to the last time I purchased it?
A: Variations in the colour are due to the fact that it is 100% extracted from a plant
which will have slight variations from harvest to harvest. Depending on the weather
conditions of the year and the quality of the soil it has been grown on, the colour and
somewhat the viscosity of the oil does vary within certain limits that are set in our
quality criteria for accepting a batch of rosehip oil. If the oil appears different, you can
rest assured that the oil has passed all QA checks and is expected to deliver the same
benefits.
Q: Is it safe to use Rosehip oil and products with essential oils during
pregnancy?
A: Rosehip oil is safe to use during pregnancy. Some customers ask if it is safe as it has
naturally occurring Vitamin A, however the Vitamin A in Rosehip oil is pro-vitamin A and
safe for pregnancy as the body converts this to Vitamin A as required. The
concentration of essential oils in The Purist Company products are safe for use during
pregnancy.
Q: What is phenoxyethanol? Is it safe?

A: Phenoxyethanol has a very long history of safe use. In selecting to use
phenoxyethanol we have rigorously assessed all cosmetic preservatives available
according to their safety and efficacy.
Phenoxyethanol has been demonstrated to lead to far fewer cases of reactions to skin
care products than any other commonly used preservative. This information is provided
by dermatologists worldwide. For this reason it is a preservative of choice for low irritant
cosmetics and formulations for babies and sufferers of eczema or dermatitis.
The Purist Company always uses phenoxyethanol in combination with other
antimicrobials and we use it at a very low level, well below the maximum allowed level
of 1% (most companies who use phenoxyethanol use it at the maximum 1% level). We
use phenoxyethanol in conjunction with other preservatives where there is a synergy
effect where much lower levels can be used.
