Chapter 05

Using maps
• Objective of the lesson- Provide basic knowledge about using a map book accurately and
productively.

Meaning of a map

A map is a diagram of a place, showing roads and highways and natural features like lakes, rivers, and
mountains.

Uses of maps

• To determine where you are going.


• To act as a model of Earth’s surface.
• Used to locate various places.
• To show the distribution of various features or types of materials.

Different types of maps

Physical Maps, Topographic Maps, Weather maps, Economic Maps, Recourse Maps, Population
Maps, World Maps, and Political Maps.

Basic features of a map

❖ Title – identifies the area shown, topic, focus, or purpose of the map
❖ Legend/ Key – explains the meaning of symbols and colours used on the map
❖ Scale – represents the relationship between distance on the map and distance in the real
world. According to the scale map size is changed.
o The topographic map of Sri Lanka drawn by the Survey Department of Sri Lanka is
drawn to the scale of 1: 50000.

It means that,

o 1cm on map equal to 50000cm on real world.


❖ Direction – often represented with an arrow
Showing the direction on any map is compulsory.
❖ Border – sets the map apart from other information
❖ Index- An index complied according to the alphabetical order is given in map books. It helpful
to find the location of a certain place.

Activity 1

The following questions are based on map 5.1 in page number 68. Answer them.

1. Draw 05 signs and write the relevant information connected to them after observing Map 5.1 in
page number 68.

Tracing a map

Necessary things

• Atlas map book


• Tracing paper/ Transparent paper
• Pencils
• Paper pins or Paper clips

Steps

1. Choose a model map of Sri Lanka.


2. Set the tracing or a transparent paper on the map and draw the coast line.
3. Set the tissue paper on the paper you need to copy the map, and draw on that line again.
4. Remove on the tissue paper and draw the coast line of Sri Lanka on traced line on paper.

❖ REMEMBER: CLEANLINESS AND NEATNESS ARE COMPULSORY IN TRACING MAPS.
