Private
Lessons
“Playing Music” is just the tip of
the iceberg!
Every instrument is unique and so is every
child! Private lessons are a great
opportunity for students to receive 1-on-1
instruction from professional musicians
that is customized to their needs as well as
focused on the skills specific to their
instrument. Lessons are great for EVERY
student—whether they want a challenge
beyond what we cover in class or they need
some extra help.

When do lessons happen?

All of our private lesson teachers come to Coy once a week to work with our students. Your child can
have their private lesson during band class or Flex. This is great for scheduling because it means you
don’t have to try to fit in another activity after school or drive your student anywhere extra.

How do we get started in lessons?

Taking lessons is easy! Visit coyband.org and click the link for
private lessons. There you will find a list of teachers who come
to the school each week and can teach lessons during your
child’s normal band class. Simply send them an email or give
them a call and they will help you get it set up. Each lesson
teacher sets their own rate and payment plans - They can help
make all the arrangements with you.
How to Support
Your Band
Student
For many parents, having a band student is
a new world! One of the best ways to help your
student is to show them you are interested in
their musical growth. Here are some things you
can do to support your band student:

ASK - Ask your student to talk to you about these things

Rhythms—What is a new rhythm you’ve learned recently?
Notes—What are the notes in the chromatic scale?
Articulation—What does articulation mean?
Posture—How should you sit when you play your instrument?
Embouchure—What does your mouth do to make a sound?

LISTEN - Experience music together!

Ask them to count or letter name part of their music for you
Listen to them play their favorite song
Share with them a YouTube video of someone who plays the same instrument
If you have the opportunity, go check out a live music performance!

LEARN - Become more knowledgeable about band

Ask your child to help you learn the names of the different parts of their instrument
Let your student teach you how to read note names, count rhythms, etc.

ENCOURAGE - Sometimes they need a little boost along the way!

Remind them to practice, even if it is just a few minutes
Support them through those squeaks and squawks - Weird sounds are part of the learning process!
Suggest they break down different songs into smaller chunks, count the rhythms, letter name it,
etc.
SmartMusic
SmartMusic is a computer program designed to
help our students practice and receive
immediate feedback about their playing.
Students can practice with a background
accompaniment and get visual and audio
feedback on each assignment, which makes
practice more meaningful and productive. It
motivates students to continue practicing in
order to improve their scores, similar to a video
game. As directors, we can provide more
individualized attention for your child, helping
them continue to grow.

Key Features
Visit coyband.org to learn more about SmartMusic and how to use it. Below are some key features of
the program:
SmartMusic is a web-based app. This means you will not need to install any software or update any
apps. Students can access it on their school Chromebook or any computer/laptop at home.
SmartMusic evaluates your child's performance as they play along with a song - It will mark the
notes they got right and those they got wrong.
Students can click on a note to hear what it sounds like or see how to play it. They can also hear
what their part for the song should sound like.
SmartMusic allows students to alter the tempo/speed of the music, allowing them to work at their
own pace.
In addition to being used for assignments, our entire band book is in SmartMusic so it is a great tool
for students to practice with.
The SmartMusic library includes 1000s of songs for students to check out, including popular music
like Harry Potter, Super Mario, Marvel, etc.

How to Access SmartMusic

Students can get to SmartMusic by going to www.smartmusic.com and logging in with their school
username and school password. Every student has a SmartMusic account! Encourage your child to
make use of this awesome tool!
Time to Restock!
All students are expected to obtain and have the following materials with them everyday.
Students who are missing supplies are not able to participate fully, which will definitely set them back
in their growth and development!

Supplies for band class:

Winds: Instrument in good working order // Percussion: Drumsticks and both sets of mallets
Accessories for their instrument
Brass - valve oil & slide grease
Woodwinds - cleaning swab; 3 reeds in PRISTINE condition (clarinets & saxes only)
½” binder with 10 page protectors - They should keep ALL handouts/music in there
Pencil (no pens!)
Essential Elements, Book 1

Now would be a great time to check that your child still has everything they need for band class.
Some items, such as reeds or valve oil, will need replenished when they run out. If your child has lost
his or her book, care kit, etc., that will need to be replaced. You can restock on any of these items by
contacting Buddy Rogers or visiting a local music store. Buddy Rogers delivers to Coy every
Tuesday.

Reeds and valve oil can also be purchased by students in our PBIS store using their Coy Pride
PBIS points. Reeds can be purchased at school for $3/each.
How to Get a
Great Grade in
Band
In band, we place a high emphasis on students trying their best. Generally speaking, a student
who puts forth their best effort, completes their assignments, and works to pass each Skills
Check will earn an A or B in band.

The following are the types of assignments we do in band and how to access them. If your child has
missing work in ProgressBook, they can turn it in late without any penalty!
Daily Grades - Students get 5 participation points each day for putting forth their best effort,
using good posture and technique, and being an active contributor to our music. As these points
are given for each day’s effort, students cannot earn back points they lost. However, they can
make better choices in future classes to ensure they don’t lose points again.
Practice Charts (7th grade only) - These are due EVERY Thursday and must be signed by a
parent to get credit. Students can turn them in late via email until 11:59 PM on the Thursday they
are due.
Bell Ringers - These are on Quizalize.com and students are given time at the start of every class
to complete it. Bell Ringers help students develop the the skills we are learning and prepare for
skills checks. These are graded for effort (e.g. the effort put in is the grade they get out).
Skills Checks - These are done in class on most Fridays. Students need a 90% to pass and get
credit for the check. Students who don’t pass should practice the skill and can try again whenever
they’ve got it!
SmartMusic - These are playing assignments completed in SmartMusic. They are usually posted
on a Monday and due on a Friday. These are graded for accuracy but students can redo them as
many times as they would like to get the grade they are happy with.

While we do not grade students based on how much they practice, students will find the
most success in class, on Skills Checks, and with SmartMusic assignments if they
practice 15-20 minutes, 4-5 days per week.
