Chapter.1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction to CNC (Computer Numerical Control)
Gaining industry experience has significant benefits whether you are in college or entering the workforce.
Regardless of your current education level or desired career path, an internship can encourage your professional
growth. Now the question is, what is ‘Summer Internship’?

Summer internships allow college students to get real-world work experience. These programs help students
build their resumes and take the first step toward a successful career after graduation. However, students aren’t
the only ones who benefit from internship programs. Companies that offer these programs get a first look at
new talent (i.e., the interns) before they enter the workforce. Internship programs also benefit a company’s
culture and its bottom line. It’s the kind of mutually beneficial relationship that makes for good business.

We get to know how CNC machine works what was there function and types and uses.

When a CNC system is activated, the desired cuts are programmed into the software and dictated to

corresponding tools and machinery, which carry out the dimensional tasks as specified, much like a robot.

In CNC programming, the code generator within the numerical system will often assume mechanisms are

Fig.1.1

CNC Block diagram

flawless, despite the possibility of errors, which is greater whenever a CNC is directed to cut in more than one
direction simultaneously. The placement of a tool in a numerical control system is outlined by a series of inputs
known as the part program.

With a numerical control machine, programs are inputted via punch cards. By contrast, the programs for CNC
machines are fed to computers through small keyboards. CNC programming is retained in a computer’s
memory. The code itself is written and edited by programmers. Therefore, CNC systems offer far more

expansive computational capacity. Best of all, CNC systems are by no means static since newer prompts can be
added to pre-existing programs through revised code.

1.2 Programming in CNC machine

Fig 1.2

CNC Program

In CNC manufacturing, machines are operated via numerical control, wherein a software program is
designated to control an object. The language behind CNC machining is alternately referred to as G-
code, and it’s written to control the various behaviors of a corresponding machine, such as the speed,
feed rate and coordination.

G code & M code

G codes and M codes hold distinct roles in CNC operations. G codes primarily instruct the machine on
the geometry of the cut, while M codes control the hardware aspects, like turning the spindle on or off.
This nuanced difference is pivotal for understanding the full potential of CNC machining.

Basically, CNC machining makes it possible to pre-program the speed and position of machine tool
functions and run them via software in repetitive, predictable cycles, all with little involvement from
human operators. In the CNC machining process, a 2D or 3D CAD drawing is conceived, which is

then translated to computer code for the CNC system to execute. After the program is inputted, the
operator gives it a trial run to ensure no mistakes are present in the coding.

1.3 Different types of CNC machine

CNC Mills

CNC mills are capable of running on programs comprised of number- and letter-based prompts that guide
pieces across various distances. The programming employed for a mill machine could be based on either G-
code or some unique language developed by a manufacturing team. Basic mills consist of a three-axis system
(X, Y and Z), though most newer mills can accommodate three additional axes.

CNC Lathe

In lathe machines, pieces are cut in a circular direction with indexable tools. With CNC technology, the cuts
employed by lathes are carried out with precision and high velocity. CNC lathes are used to produce complex
designs that wouldn’t be possible on manually run versions of the machine. Overall, the control functions of
CNC-run mills and lathes are similar. As with CNC mills, lathes can be directed by G-code or unique
proprietary code. However, most CNC lathes consist of two axes — X and Z.

CNC Plasma cutter

In a plasma cutter, a plasma torch cuts the material. The process is foremost applied to metal materials but can
also be employed on other surfaces. In order to produce the speed and heat necessary to cut metal, plasma is
generated through a combination of compressed-air gas and electrical arcs.

TECNOLOGIES IN INDUSTRY

5.1 Technology used in Industry

During my 6 weeks of industrial training, I learned about these advanced machines in

the industry.

1) AUTOMATIC BAND METAL CUTTING TOOL MACHINE

Fig. 5.1
Automatic band metal cutting tool machine

The machine operates by utilizing a continuous loop of metal band saw blades, which
is tensioned and rotated by an electric motor. The metal workpiece is securely
clamped in place and fed into the blade, which cuts through the metal using a slow
and controlled motion. The blade is designed to move in a precise, linear motion,
ensuring accurate cuts an

minimizing waste. As the blade advances, it is continuously cooled and lubricated to

prevent overheating and prolong its lifespan. The machine's control system regulates
the cutting speed, feed rate, and blade tension to optimize the cutting process for
various metal types and sizes. Overall, the automatic band metal cutting tool machine
provides a precise, efficient, and reliable solution for metal cutting applications.
By just providing the metal rod and specifying the length it cuts through many pieces
on its own.

2) CNC MACHINE

Fig. 5.3

CNC Jyoti

CNC machine works on the principle of rotating spindle and a turret which holds all
the cutting tools. It can hold a maximum of 8 tools on it. All the movement like tool
movement and others except spindle rotation is done by hydraulic system. It uses
Fanuc OI-TF-PLUS to control the machine movement. CNC machines are very
precise machine only used in industrial, and manufacturing level. The cost of this
machine is around 20-25L. The maintenance cost is around 15k per month. CNC
control system, guided by a pre-programmed design file, accurately controls the
movement of the spindle and cutting tool to ensure precise and repetitive cuts. With
its high degree of accuracy, speed, and versatility, CNC machines have
revolutionized the manufacturing industry, enabling the production of complex parts
and components with ease and efficiency.

3) VMC MACHINE

Fig.5.4

VMC Machine

This machine is also similar to the CNC machine the only difference is that it works
in a vertical direction and the tool rotate along its own axis while in CNC the job
rotates and tool is stationary. It also uses different control panel for its working but in
the industry fanuc control panel was used. The approximate cost of this machine is

CNC machine. It is used at industry and also for manufacturing purpose.

4) LATHE MACHINE

Fig 5.5

Lathe Machine

Lathe machine uses a belt and a motor and a manual operation is needed unlike CNC
which needs some lines of program to work. Key components of a lathe machine
include the bed, headstock, tailstock, carriage, and cutting tool. The bed serves as the
base, providing stability and support for other components. The headstock houses the
spindle, which rotates the workpiece at various speeds via gears and belts. The
tailstock supports the opposite end of the workpiece and can move along the bed
to accommodate

different lengths. The carriage moves along the bed and holds the cutting tool,
allowing it to move across the workpiece to perform various machining operations.

Approx cost: 5L

5) EQUPIMENTS

Ch.6 key learning

6.1Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing process is a series of steps that transform raw materials into a
finished product. It involves several stages, including design, prototyping, production
planning, material selection, machinery setup, assembly, quality control, testing,
packaging, and distribution. The process varies depending on the industry, product,
and manufacturer, but ultimately aims to create a high-quality product efficiently and
effectively. Effective manufacturing processes are crucial for businesses to maintain
competitiveness, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.

6.2 Process of Manufacturing

The process starts by first planning the job size and dimension, then creating a
program for it on the CNC machine. The machine is then set by the setter and the
program is input and rechecked. The material was then cut by the cutting machine then
the raw material is then inserted into the machine. the machine performs the rest of the
operation on its own as the program runs. This is the most important step to not only
get the program running but also to make it run efficiently as to reduce the cycle time,
which. in turn reduce the production cost which is beneficial to the industry. The
production planning is also very important in the manufacturing process.

6.2 Production Planning and Control Process

The production planning process is very important in manufacturing process.

Production planning and control can be viewed as nervous system of the production
operation. This function aims at efficient utilization of material resources, people and
facilities in any undertaking through planning, coordinating and controlling the
25
Department of mechanical engineering K.K.Wagh polytechnic Nashik

production activities that transform the raw material into finished products or
components as a most optimal manner. All the activities in manufacturing or
production cycle must be planned, coordinated, organized and
controlling to its objectives.

6.3 Production Process Planning

The planning starts by first creating the job / product 3D model. It is necessary to
specify the actually dimensions of the job and make a product on computer using
CAD software. Manage the raw material supply, setting the machines, etc

26
Department of mechanical engineering K.K.Wagh polytechnic Nashik
Industrial training in Zentech Industries pvt.Ltd.

6.4 Testing of Raw Materials

The testing of the raw material brought to the industry can be done in various
methods:

1) Micrometer

2) Vernier Caliper
3) Height Gauge

4) Rockwell Hardness Tester

5) Vickers Hardness Test

6) Vibrating Machine
7) Temperature Sensor machine
8) Tortional Testing Machine

The extent of raw material testing is determined by the manufacturer. A conservative

approach would be to perform complete analysis of each lot of raw materials
received. USP provides monographs for the most commonly used raw materials in the
pharmaceutical industry.

At Zentech Industries the Common examples of inspection by measurement or

gauging include using a caliper, micrometer and this equipment is used.

At Zentech Industries initially the raw material is inspected for quality. For this
sampling inspection activity is done.

The finished product of Zentech Industries is meticulously inspected by quality

assurance department as per the design parameters. The finished product after getting
clearance from QA department is sent to sales department.

The testing and proper inspection of raw material is

important for end customer satisfaction. Various mechanical as well as observational
inspection tests are carried out in Zentech Industries to assure customer

6.5 Quality Assurance

1) Quality assurance (QA) is a way of preventing

mistakes and defects in manufactured products and avoiding problems when
delivering products or
services to customers; which ISO 9000 defines as "part of quality management
focused on providing
confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled".

2) The terms "quality assurance" and "quality control" are often used
interchangeably to refer to ways of ensuring the quality of a service or
product.

3) For instance, the term "assurance" is often used as follows: Implementation

of inspection and structured
testing as a measure of quality assurance in a televisio

set software project at Philips Semiconductors is described.

1) The term "control", however, is used to describe the fifth phase of the
Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control (DMAIC) model. DMAIC is a
data-driven quality strategy used to improve processes

2) The literal definition of quality assurance is “the

maintenance of a desired level of quality in a service or product, especially by
means of attention to every stage of the process of delivery or production.”

Chapter.7
MAJOR MATERIAL HANDLING AND PROCEDURE

7.1Material Handling

Material handling equipment (MHE) is mechanical equipment used for the

movement, storage, control and protection of materials, goods and products
throughout the process of manufacturing, distribution, consumption and disposal. The
different types of handling equipment can be classified into four major categories
transport equipment, positioning equipment, unit load formation equipment, and
storage equipment. Transport equipment is used to move material from one location
to another (e.g., between workplaces, between a loading dock and a storage area,
etc.), while positioning equipment is used to manipulate material at a single location.
The major subcategories of transport equipment are conveyors, cranes, and industrial
trucks. Material can also be transported manually using no equipment their
application helps with:

1) Production planning
2) Less Time Consumable
3) Profitable
4) Fast delivery

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

8.1 Safety precautions followed

Safety Procedures

Industrial safety procedures and rules date back to the 19th century when the United
States enacted its first legislation to regulate the conditions of work in factories. They
have since developed through federal and state legislation, voluntary organizational
safety programs, and investigations to determine the state of industrial safety. In the
modern day, the Department of Labor regulates industrial safety. There are four
distinct aspects of industrial safety procedures and rules: development,
communication, enforcement and benefits

Safety Policy

The safety policy also details the measures the company takes and will take to protect
the life, limb, and health of their employees, often surpassing the requirements set out
by the laws or by the standard practices of the industry. The National Policy, referring
to the Constitution of India, sets out a set of goals with the view to building and
maintaining a national preventative safety and health culture and improving the
safety, health and environment at workplace. The Policy also expresses a set of the
national objectives

Safety & Training

The Industrial Safety course programmed teaches students all practical aspects of.
Risk management techniques.Safety management operations Monitoring safety and
health operations Improving standard of health of the employees and enhancing
general safety measures. Safety training describes the set of activities aimed at
providing workers with the knowledge and skills to perform their duties safely and
effectively. Workplace safety training is usually mandated by government regulating
33

bodies, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the
United States.

Protective Equipments

PPE is equipment that will protect the user against health or safety risks at work. It
can include items such as safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility
clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses. It also includes respiratory protective
equipment (RPE) .The Importance of Personal Protective Equipment. PPE is
equipment that will protect workers against health or safety risks on the job. The
purpose is to reduce employee exposure to hazards when engineering and
administrative controls are not feasible or effective to reduce these risks to acceptable

CONCLUSION

9.1 Conclusion

I am a student of K. K. Wagh Polytechnic, Nashik was allotted in the industry named

Zentech Industries have completed 6 weeks industrial training from 03/06/24 to
13/07/24. I visited the industry and gain practical experience on many topics. I gain
knowledge on different machines but major was CNC machine and its programming. I
learned about CNC machine in depth under the guidance of my supervisor and also
mentor, I also gain knowledge on social interaction, developed communication skills
which are important in our life. I learned about the CNC programming which is an
important topic for mechanical Engineers and I can now able to create my own machine
program over the CNC machine. In short, I gained practical as well as theoretical
knowledge in the industry.

REFERANCE

10.1 Reference

 Early Inspiration (18th Century): The concept of using machines for

precise machining goes back to the 1700s, with the development of early
lathes that replaced handcrafted techniques.
 Birth of NC (1940s-1950s): During World War II, the need for precision
in parts like aircraft propellers led to the development of Numerical
Control (NC) machines. These early machines used punched tape to
control the movements of the tools.
 The First CNC Machine (1952): A team at MIT led by John Parsons is
credited with developing the first CNC milling machine in 1952. This
machine was designed specifically for the high-precision production of
helicopter blades.
 Patent and Commercialization (1958): Richard Kegg, who collaborated
with MIT on the first CNC machine, patented a "Motor Controlled
Apparatus for Positioning Machine Tool" in 1958. This marked the
commercial birth of CNC technology.
 Early Control Systems (1940s-1970s): Early CNC machines relied on
punched tape and then analog computers for control. In the 1960s and
1970s, the shift to digital technologies further improved automation and
efficiency.
 Rise of CAD/CAM (1970s): The development of Computer Aided
Design (CAD) software in the 1970s allowed for easier creation of 3D
models that could be used to generate CNC programs. This made CNC
technology more accessible.
 Industry Standard (1980s): By the 1980s, CNC machining became the

standard for high-volume production due to its precision, efficiency, and

flexibility.
 Continuous Evolution (Present): CNC technology continues to evolve
with advancements in computer processing power, software, and machine
design. Today, CNC machines offer even greater capabilities for complex
part creation and integration with other manufacturing processes.
