workshop for scientists on using ‘infrasound’ in the coming months. Infrasound refers to
sound waves with frequencies below 20 Hz, inaudible to humans; It can travel long
distances and penetrate materials like walls; Sources include natural events (earthquakes,
volcanic eruptions, ocean waves) and man-made ones (explosions, industrial machinery);
Frequencies range from 0.001 Hz to 20 Hz, and infrasound can pass through solid objects;
It requires specialized instruments such as barometers, seismometers, and infrasound
sensors for detection; Applications include monitoring natural disasters, detecting nuclear
explosions, aiding animal communication (e.g., elephants and whales), and supporting
atmospheric and medical research; These noiseless sounds can travel very long distances
without losing steam — a property that CTBTO finds useful for detecting distant nuclear
explosions. The CTBTO’s International Monitoring System (IMS) uses a range of
technologies to detect nuclear explosions.

communication; Diverse crew training demonstrated that non-professional astronauts,
including two engineers and a retired Air Force pilot, can successfully perform complex
space operations, paving the way for future commercial space exploration.
229. Helium and its use in Rockets- Space X - Polaris Dawn Mission - Helium was used in
the Polaris Dawn mission to pressurize fuel tanks and cool systems in the SpaceX Falcon 9
rocket; Helium is an inert, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas with atomic number 2,
making it the second lightest element after hydrogen; It is the second most abundant
element in the universe, making up about 24% of its elemental mass; Helium is used in
cryogenics, cooling superconducting magnets (e.g., MRI scanners), and in balloons and
airships because it is non-flammable and lighter than air; It is produced in large quantities
by nuclear fusion reactions in stars, including the Sun; As a non-renewable resource, its
depletion on Earth is a concern due to its widespread use; In rockets, helium is used for its
lightness, energy efficiency, low boiling point, and non-reactivity; It helps reduce rocket
weight, lowers fuel consumption, and maintains fuel tank pressure as the rocket fuel is
used; Helium's small atomic size makes it prone to leaks, but its presence is easily
detectable in spacecraft systems; Leaks in systems like ISRO’s Chandrayaan 2, ESA’s Ariane
5, and NASA’s Starliner missions have been linked to helium.
230. Cellulitis Scheme- Cellulitis disease, which used to affect a few people during the rainy

hole system, has been discovered to be a triple system; It consists of a central black hole
consuming a star every 6.5 days, with a second star orbiting the black hole at a vast
distance, completing one orbit every 70,000 years; Located in the Milky Way, about 8,000
light-years from Earth, this discovery challenges traditional black hole formation theories;
The distant star's presence suggests a "direct collapse" formation of the black hole, instead
of a supernova explosion; Black holes have intense gravity, with their event horizon being
the boundary where escape velocity exceeds the speed of light; In 2019, the Event Horizon
Telescope captured the first-ever image of a black hole in the M87 galaxy, 55 million light-
years away.

residents lost ₹452 crore in 2024 compared to ₹175 crore in 2023. Phishing attacks,
especially targeting mobile banking users, have also escalated, affecting several private
banks. India leads the Asia-Pacific region, with 66.5% of mobile malware incidents in this
area. Strengthening cybersecurity measures, public awareness, and education on phishing
are critical steps to mitigate these risks.
323. Extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) – It is a small, circular genetic fragment found in
cancer cells that plays a critical role in tumor growth and resistance to treatment.
Originally discovered 50 years ago, ecDNA was initially thought to appear in only a small
percentage of tumors. However, recent studies show that it is found in up to 90% of
certain brain tumors. Unlike chromosomal DNA, ecDNA can move freely and cluster,
enhancing the expression of oncogenes and contributing to faster tumor growth and
treatment resistance. EcDNA violates Mendel's third law of inheritance by clustering
during cell division, giving cancer cells an advantage in preserving beneficial genetic
combinations. Despite its risks, ecDNA presents a potential weakness in cancer cells, which
could be targeted therapeutically. Blocking the CHK1 protein, involved in DNA repair,
may selectively kill cancer cells with ecDNA. Companies like Boundless Bio are focusing
on developing treatments targeting ecDNA-driven cancers, such as glioblastoma, ovarian,
and lung cancers. This emerging field holds promise for improving cancer treatment
outcomes by targeting ecDNA-related mechanisms.
324. India’s Nuclear Energy Sector– with a capacity of 8,180 MW, includes contributions
from international partners like Russia. While India excels in using pressurized heavy water
reactors and has a strong safety record, progress has been slow. Despite vast thorium
reserves, which could play a crucial role in future energy security, India has not yet
harnessed thorium for power generation. The country’s three-stage nuclear program,
designed by Dr. Homi Bhabha, faces delays at the second stage, hindering overall
advancement. Key projects like the 500 MW Prototype Fast-Breeder Reactor and the
S&T Current Affairs Gist 2024 Mana La Excellence Malleswari Reddy
Advanced Heavy Water Reactor have faced construction and approval delays. Emerging
technologies, such as small modular reactors, could help meet future energy needs if India
addresses these delays promptly.
325. Proba-3 Mission– ISRO launched the European Space Agency’s Proba-3 mission,
involving two satellites for precision formation flying in space, marking a technological first
in solar observation. PSLV 59 launched the Proba-3 mission, marking a collaboration with
the European Space Agency (ESA) and New Space India Limited (NSIL). The Proba-3
mission is the first precision formation flying mission, aiming to deploy two satellites into
a special elliptical orbit to study the solar corona. With a combined weight of 550 kg, the
mission is focused on understanding the Sun's outermost layer, which plays a critical role
in solar physics and space weather forecasting. The PSLV’s reliability makes it ideal for this
complex mission, highlighting India's growing capabilities in space exploration.
326. The High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) observatory in Namibia has detected
cosmic rays with energies up to 40 teraelectronvolts (TeV), 40,000 times more powerful
than visible light. These cosmic rays lose energy while traveling through space due to
interactions with light and magnetic fields. While the exact sources remain unclear,
scientists suspect they are located a few thousand light-years away. The detection of high-
energy electrons and positrons suggests the occurrence of extreme cosmic events. These
findings are important for understanding phenomena like star explosions, pulsars, and
black holes, although cosmic rays can interfere with technology like satellites.
327. The United Nations Convention against Cybercrime – adopted by 193 UN member
states, is a landmark global treaty aimed at strengthening international cooperation in
combating cybercrime and safeguarding societies from digital threats. The treaty
mandates countries to implement domestic laws that criminalize unauthorized access to
information systems and encourages collaboration in cybercrime investigations while
respecting state sovereignty. It also ensures that the treaty’s provisions align with
international human rights law and mandates the criminalization of child sexual
exploitation material. Additionally, the treaty advocates for global initiatives to raise public
awareness and prevent cybercrime. Set to be signed in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2025, it marks
the first international criminal justice agreement in over two decades and reflects a
significant commitment to enhancing cybersecurity.
328. The IRIS2 (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite)
space programme – launched by the European Union, is an ambitious initiative aimed at
providing secure, high-speed satellite connectivity. It is the EU's third major satellite
infrastructure project, following the Galileo Navigation System and Copernicus Earth
Observation Programme. With a constellation of 290 satellites operating in medium and
low Earth orbits, IRIS2 aims to offer connectivity in regions where traditional networks are
inadequate. The programme will support a wide range of governmental applications,
including surveillance, crisis management, security, and defence, and is designed to rival
private initiatives like Elon Musk’s Starlink. The European Space Agency has been
instrumental in its development.

329. The Human Rated Launch Vehicle Mark-3– (HLVM-3) is a modified version of ISRO's
LVM3, developed to transport humans for India's Gaganyaan mission. The mission aims to
achieve safe human spaceflight with advanced reliability and safety features. The HLVM-3
stands 53 meters tall, weighs 640 tonnes, and has a payload capacity of approximately 10
tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO). A critical component is the Crew Escape System (CES),
designed to protect astronauts in case of an emergency during flight, particularly during
early stages of ascent. The base LVM3 vehicle, a three-stage launch vehicle, is capable of
carrying up to 8 tonnes to LEO and 4 tonnes to Geostationary Transfer Orbits (GTO).
330. Dharani – is a pioneering project by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, which
has released the largest publicly available digital dataset of the human foetal brain. This
comprehensive atlas offers detailed insights into brain development from the second
trimester of the foetus. Dharani is developed with significantly lower funding compared
to the US-based Allen Brain Atlas, making it a cost-effective achievement. The dataset aims
to enhance current foetal imaging techniques and enable early diagnosis and treatment
of brain-related health conditions. Additionally, it provides valuable data for
understanding neurological disorders such as autism.
331. Voronezh Long-Range Radar System– India is finalizing a $4 billion defense deal with
Russia to acquire the advanced Voronezh long-range radar system, developed by Russia’s
Almaz-Antey Corporation. This system is capable of detecting threats like ballistic missiles
and stealth aircraft over distances of up to 8,000 kilometers, and can track over 500 objects
simultaneously. The radar uses phased array technology, offering rapid electronic beam
steering, making it more efficient than older radar systems. The system will be part of an
integrated Missile Attack Early Warning System, and the radar will be installed in
Chitradurga, Karnataka, providing early warning capabilities against missile threats from
China and Pakistan.
332. MuleHunter.AI– It is an advanced AI tool developed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
to combat financial fraud and money laundering by detecting mule accounts. Mule
accounts are exploited by criminals to funnel illicit funds, often through unsuspecting
individuals, called money mules. The tool uses machine learning algorithms to analyze
transaction data and account details, identifying mule accounts with greater accuracy than
traditional rule-based systems. It tracks illicit fund flows, helping banks detect fraudulent
activities more effectively. Successfully piloted in two public sector banks, MuleHunter.AI
is being urged for wider adoption across the banking sector.
