Spark Classes Assignment 3: Laws of Motion
1. A 30 kg shell is flying at 48 m/s. When it explodes, its one part of
18 kg stops, while the remaining part flies on. Find the velocity of the latter. 2. A block of mass 8 kg is pulled along a horizontal frictionless surface by a rope of mass 2kg. A force of 100N is applied at the free end of the rope. Find the force exerted by the rope on the block? 3. An elevator weighs 4000Kg. When the upward tension in the supporting cable is 48000N, what is the upward acceleration? Starting from rest, how far does it rise in 3s? 4. A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly with 2 m/ s2. At t=10s, a stone is dropped out of the window (1m high) of the car. What are the a) velocity and b) acceleration of the stone at t=10.1s? Take g = 9.8 m/ s2? 5. A hammer weighing 1kg moving with the speed of 10m/s strikes the head of a nail driving it 10cm into a wall. Neglecting the mass of the nail, calculate i) the acceleration during the impact, ii) the time interval during the impact and iii) the impulse? 6. Fig1, shows two bodies A and B of masses 2.5kg and 2.8kg suspended from a rigid support by two inextensible wires each length 1.8m. The lower is of mass 1.5kg/m, while the upper wire is of negligible mass. If the whole system moves in upward direction with an acceleration of 2 m/ s2, find the tension a) at the midpoint P of the upper wire and b) at the midpoint Q of the lower wire. Take g= 10 m/ s2 7. A hunter has a a machine gun that can fire 50g bullets with a velocity of 150m/s. A 60kg tiger springs at him with a velocity of 10m/s. How many bullets must the hunter fire into the tiger in order to stop him in his track? 8. During explosion, a bomb explodes into three pieces. Two fragments whose masses are 0.8kg and 0.5kg fly off with velocity of 10m/s and 16m/s respectively along the path at right angles to each other. If the third fragment goes off with a velocity of 24m/s, then find its mass and direction of motion w.r.t the first fragment.

9. Two blocks each having mass 20kg, rest on a frictionless surface as shown in fig2. Assuming the pulleys to be light and frictionless, calculate i) acceleration of the system ii) tension in the string iii) the time required for block A to move 1m down the plane? 10. A body moving on a ground with a velocity of 15m/s comes to rest after covering 25m. If the acceleration due to gravity is 10 m/ s2, find the coefficient of friction between the ground and the body? 11. A box is lying on the floor of a moving train and the coefficient of friction between the floor and the box is 0.24. Find the maximum acceleration of the train for which the box will lie stationary on the floor. Given that g= 9.8 m/ s2 12. A body placed on a rough inclined plane just begins to slide, when the slope of the plane is 1 in 4. Calculate the coefficient of friction. 13. A gramophone record is rotating at 90r.p.m and a coin of mass 20g is placed at 10cm from its centre. What is the centrifugal force acting on the coin? 14. Two skaters of equal mass on a circular rink go around the ring in the same time. One skater is twice as far from the centre of the rink as the other. Compare a) speeds of the skaters b) the centripetal forces acting on them, c) what exerts the centripetal force on them? 15. A car of mass 1200kg can take a turn on a circular level road of radius of 150m with a maximum speed of 15m/s without skidding. Find the force of friction and the coefficient of friction between the tyres of the car and road. 16. A train rounds a curved of radius 150m at a speed of 20m/s. Calculate the angle of banking so that there is no side thrust on the rails. Also find the elevation of the outer rail over the inner rail if the distance between the rails is 1m. 17. A body weighing 0.4kg is whirled in a vertical circle making 2 revolutions per second. If the radius of the circle is 1.2m, find the tension in the string, when body is a) the bottom of the circle b) at the top of the circle.
