What is RS422?

The RS-422 interface is similar to RS-232. Allows you to

simultaneously send and receive messages on separate lines (full
duplex), but uses a differential signal for this, i.e. The potential
difference between conductors A and B.

The data transfer speed in RS-422 depends on the distance and can
vary from 10 kbps (1200 meters) to 10 Mbps (10 meters).

In the RS-422 network, there can only be one transmitting device

and up to 10 receiving devices.

The RS-422 line is 4 wires for data transmission (2 twisted wires for
transmission and 2 twisted wires for receiving) and one common
GND ground wire.

Twisting wires (twisted pair) with each other allows you to get rid of
interference and interference, because the interference acts equally
on both wires, and the information is extracted from the potential
difference between the conductors A and B of one line.

Logic levels and Voltage standards

The voltage on the data lines can be in the range from -6 V to +6 V.

The logical difference between A and B is greater than +0.2 V.

Logical 1 corresponds to the difference between A and B less than -

0.2 V.

The RS-422 standard does not define a specific type of connector,

usually it can be a terminal block or a DB9 connector.

RS-422 pinout depends on the manufacturer of the device and is

specified in the documentation for it.

2
When connecting an RS-422 device, you need to make a crosshair
between the RX and TX pins, as shown in the figure.

Because the distance between the receiver and the transmitter RS-
422 can reach 1200 meters, then to prevent reflection of the signal
from the end of the line, a special 120ohm termination resistor or
"terminator" is put. This resistor is set between RX + and RX-
contacts at the beginning and end of the line.

Advantages of RS 422

1. Long Distance Runs - Up to 500 feet is generally supported, and

with repeaters, even further distances can be achieved.
2. Multi-Drop - Usually, up to 32 devices can be connected per
port, and even more using repeaters. Devices are distinguished
by unique addresses that are assigned to each device. For
example, if you have 5 devices attached to a port, they would
be addressed as units 1 to 5. If you want to communicate to
unit #1, you send a command to unit #1. All units HEAR the
command, but only the addressed unit will respond. This also
applies to RS485. The addresses can be set via switches or
software, depending on the design of the device.
3. Noise Resistant - Since it uses a separate FLOATING transmit
and receive pair (four wires), it offers better noise immunity
than RS232.

The main differences between RS-232, RS-422 and
RS-485
RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 are all standards for serial
communication, but they have distinct features and applications:

RS-232

• Distance: Effective up to 15 meters (50 feet).

• Speed: Typically supports baud rates up to 115.2 kbps, though
higher rates are possible.
• Wiring: Uses a single-ended signal (ground and signal), which
makes it more susceptible to noise.
• Devices: Generally point-to-point (one sender and one
receiver).
• Connectors: Commonly uses DB9 or DB25 connectors.
• Common Use: Older computer serial ports, modems, and some
industrial equipment.

RS-422

• Distance: Can communicate over longer distances, up to 1200

meters (4000 feet).  Speed: Supports higher data rates than
RS-232, typically up to 10 Mbps.
• Wiring: Differential signaling (uses two wires for each signal),
which provides better noise immunity.
• Devices: Can support point-to-point and point-to-multipoint
(one sender to multiple receivers) configurations.
• Common Use: Used in applications requiring long-distance
communication, such as industrial automation.

RS-485

• Distance: Similar to RS-422, it can also operate up to 1200

meters (4000 feet).
• Speed: Supports data rates up to 10 Mbps, similar to RS-422.
• Wiring: Also uses differential signaling, enhancing noise
immunity.

4
• Devices: Supports multipoint configurations (up to 32 devices
on the same bus), allowing for a bus topology.
• Common Use: Widely used in industrial networks, building
automation, and situations where multiple devices need to
communicate over long distances.
