Assertion (A) : It is fatal to touch a live electric wire as the person gets a severe electric shock. In
some cases, electric shock can even kill a person.
Reason (R) : The electric current passes through the body to the earth forming a circuit and burns
the blood.

In the given circuit reading in the ammeter A is 2A, what would be the value of R1 ?

6 (a) Through same current flows through the electric line wires and the filament of bulb, 3
yet only the filament glows. Why?
(b) The temperature of the filament of bulb is 2700 0 C when it glows. Why does it not
get burnt up at such high temperature?
(c) An electric iron is rated 2 kW at 220V. Calculate the capacity of the fuse that should
be used for the electric iron.

7 (a) Name the four parts labelled as a, b, c and d in given diagram and write their 3
functions.

(b) Explain why danger signals are red.

(a) Explain giving reason why the sky appears blue to an observer from the surface of
the earth. What should the appearance of the sky be during the day for an astronaut
staying in the international space station orbiting the Earth?
(b) Explain why stars appear to twinkle.
8 As shown in the diagram an aluminium rod 'AB' is suspended horizontally between the two 3
poles of a strong horse shoe magnet in such a way that the axis of the rod is horizontal and the
direction of the magnetic field is vertically upward. The rod is connected in series with a
battery and a key.

State giving reason:


(a) What is observed when a current is passed through the aluminium rod from end B to
end A?
(b) What change is observed in a situation in which the axis of the rod 'AB' is moved and
aligned parallel to the magnetic field and current is passed in the rod in the same
direction?
(c) When is the force experienced by a current-carrying straight conductor placed in a
uniform magnetic field:
a. Maximum b. Minimum

9 "A convex lens can form a magnified erect as well as magnified inverted image of an object 5
placed in front of it". Draw ray diagram to justify this statement stating the position of the
object with respect to the lens in each case.
An object of height 4 cm is placed at a distance of 20 cm from a concave lens of focal length
10 cm. Use lens formula to determine the position of the image formed.
OR
An object is placed at a distance of 30 cm from a convex mirror, the magnification produced is
1/2. Where should the object be placed to get the magnification of 1/3? Draw ray diagram for
second case.

10 The diagram given is a schematic diagram of a household circuit. The house shown in the 4
above diagram has 5 usable spaces where electrical connections are made. For this house, the
mains have a voltage of 220V and the net current coming from the mains is 22A.

(a) What is the mode of connection to all the spaces in the house from the mains?
(b) The spaces 5 and 4 have the same resistance and spaces 3 and 2 have respective
resistances of 20 and 30 . Space 1 has a resistance double that the space 5. What is
the net resistance for space 5.
(c) What is the current in space 3? (1  2  1)

(c) What should be placed between the main connection and the rest of the house's
electrical appliances to save them from accidental high electric current?

support the answer.

A compound 'X' on heating with excess conc. sulphuric acid at 443 K gives an unsaturated
compound 'Y', 'X' also reacts with sodium metal to evolve a colourless gas 'Z'. Identify 'X', 'Y'
and 'Z'. Write the equations of the chemical reactions of formation of 'Y' and Z also write the
role of sulphuric acid.

13 Read the given paragraph and answer the questions based on the concept: 4
Ionic compounds are formed by the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal. The
electron transfer in such compounds is controlled by the electronic configuration of the elements
involved. Every element tends to attain a completely filled valence shell of its nearest noble gas
or a stable octet.

(b) While forming sodium chloride how does chlorine atom attain its stable configuration?

16 A student crossed pea plants having round and yellow seeds with pea plants having wrinkled 4
and green seeds. He found that only one type of seeds were produced in the F1 generation.
When these F1 generation pea plants were self-pollinated with each other, then in addition to
the seed type of F1 generation, some new types of seed combinations were also obtained in the
F2 generation.
(a) Mention the dominant traits observed in F1 generation.
(b) What are the new possible combinations of seeds likely to be observed in F2 generation?
(c) Give reason why the traits which were not visible in the seeds of F1 generation
reappeared in the seeds of F2 generation. Write the ratio of different types of seeds
obtained in F2 generation in this case.
