3 In this question, the assertion and reason have been put forward. Read the statements 1
carefully and choose the correct alternative from the following:-

Assertion (A) : Fuse is a safety device which is installed to prevent electrical circuits and possible
fires.
Reason (R) : Fuse consist of tin-plated copper wire having low melting point, which melts and
breaks the circuit if the current exceeds a safe value.

(b) List its two causes.
(c) Name the type of lens used for the correction of this defect.

5 Calculate the total resistance of the circuit and find the total current in the circuit. 2

A student has two resistors 2 and 3 . She has to put one of them in place of R2 as shown in the
circuit. The current that she needs in the entire circuit is exactly 9A. Show by calculation which of
the two resistors she should choose.

6 (a) Through same current flows through the electric line wires and the filament of bulb, 3
yet only the filament glows. Why?
(b) The temperature of the filament of bulb is 2700 0 C when it glows. Why does it not get
burnt up at such high temperature?
(c) An electric iron is rated 2 kW at 220V. Calculate the capacity of the fuse that should
be used for the electric iron.
7 (a) Name the four parts labelled as a, b, c and d in given diagram and write their functions. 3

(b) Explain why danger signals are red.


OR
(a) Explain giving reason why the sky appears blue to an observer from the surface of the
earth. What should the appearance of the sky be during the day for an astronaut staying in
the international space station orbiting the Earth?
(b) Explain why stars appear to twinkle.

8 (a) State Maxwell's Right-Hand Thumb rule. 3


(b) PQ is a current-carrying conductor in the plane of the paper as shown in the figure. Mention
the direction of magnetic fields produced b it at points A and B. Given r1  r2 , where will
the strength of the magnetic field be larger?

9 "A concave mirror can form a magnified erect as well as magnified inverted image of an object 5
placed in front of it". Draw ray diagram to justify this statement stating the position of the
object with respect to the mirror in each case.
An object of height 4 cm is placed at a distance of 20 cm from a convex mirror of focal length
10 cm. Use mirror formula to determine the position of the image formed.
OR
An object is placed at a distance of 30 cm from a concave lens, the magnification produced is
1/2. Where should the object be placed to get the magnification of 1/3? Draw ray diagram for
second case.

10 Current- time graphs from two different sources are shown in the following diagrams. Study the 4
same and answer the questions as followed.

(a) Name the type of current shown by graph A and graph B.


(b) Name any one source for each type of these currents.
(c) What is the frequency of current in case B in India? And how many times it changes
its direction in one second. (1+1+2)

(c) Use the above graphs to write two differences between the current in two cases.

Propanal.
(b) Name the salts responsible for hardness of water. How scum is formed? Explain with
equation.

A compound C (molecular formula, CH3COOH reacts with Na - metal to form a compound R
and evolves a gas which burns with a pop sound. Compound C on treatment with an alcohol A in
presence of an acid forms a sweet smelling compound S. On addition of NaOH to C, it also gives
R and water. S on treatment with NaOH solution gives back R and A. Identify
C, R, A, S and write down the reactions involved.
13 Read the given paragraph and answer the questions based on the concept:
Ionic compounds are formed by the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal. The
electron transfer in such compounds is controlled by the electronic configuration of the elements
involved. Every element tends to attain a completely filled valence shell of its nearest noble gas or 1
a stable octet. Now answer: 1

16 If we cross pure-bred tall (dominant) pea plant with pure-bred dwarf (recessive) pea plant we 4
will get Pea plant of F1 generation, then we obtain Pea plants of F2 generation.
(a) What do the plants of F1 generation look like?
(b) State the ratio of tall plants to dwarf plants in F2 generation.
(c) What is meant by the terms (i) dominant, and (ii) recessive traits? Explain.
OR
(c) State the type of plants not found in F1 generation but appeared in F2 generation, mentioning
the reason for the same.
