field B produced yellow-coloured seeds. It was observed that in field A, the offsprings showed
only the parental trait for consecutive generations, whereas in field B, majority of the offsprings
showed a variation in the progeny. What are the probable reason for these?

exists in 70% of the same population, which of the two trait is likely to have arisen earlier? Give
reason

36. (a) A student has focused the image of a candle flame on a white screen using a
concave mirror. The situation is as given below. height of the object = 1.5 cm. focal
length of the mirror = 12 cm distance of object from the mirror = 18 cm
If the flame is perpendicular to the principal axis of the mirror, then calculate the following.
i) Distance of the image from the mirror.
ii) Height of the image.
(b) The distance between the mirror and the flame is then reduced to 10cm. With the help of a

SECTION - E
Question No. 37 to 39 are case - based/data -based questions with 2 to 3 short sub -
parts. Internal choice is provided in one of these sub-parts.
37. Food, clothes, medicines, books, or many of the things are all based on this versatile element
carbon. The element carbon occurs in different forms in nature with widely varying physical
properties. Carbon has the unique ability to form bonds with other atoms of carbon, giving rise
to large molecules called catenation. These compounds may have long chains of carbon,
branched chains of carbon or even carbon atom arranged in rings. A hetero atom can replace
hydrogen atom of a hydrocarbon and these hetero atoms or groups containing these confer
specific properties to the compound and are called as functional group. A homologous series is
a series of organic compounds which belong to the same family and show similar chemical
properties. The members of this series are called homologous and differ from each other by the
number of CH2 units in the main carbon chain.
6
a) Prasad has a saturated alcohol X of chemical formula C 4H9OH.Write the chemical formula of a
member Y that comes two places after X in the homologous series and state by how much will its
molecular mass differ from that of X.
b) How do the chemical properties of X compare with those of Y? Give a reason for your answer.
OR
Identify the functional group and write the IUPAC name of the compound
CH3-CH2-CH2-CHO. What will be the structure of the next homologue of this compound.
38. Free and attached ear lobes are the characters present in a family consisting of two children
and parents.(fig.a to d)
Excited by his observation of different types of ear lobes present in his family, Rahul conducted a
survey of the type of ear lobes found in his classmates (fig. e and f)
Sex Free Attached
Male 36 14
Female 31 19
On the basis of above data answer the following questions.
a) Which of the two characteristics - free ear lobe or attached ear lobe‟ appears to be dominant in
this case? Why?
b) Is the inheritance of the free ear lobe linked with sex of the individual? Give reason for your
answer.
c) What type of ear lobe is present in father, mother, Rahul and his sister Nisha? Write the genetic
constitution of each of these family members which explains the inheritance of this character in
this family?
d) (Gene for Free ear lobe is represented by F and gene for attached ear lobe is represented by f
for writing the genetic constitution).
OR
Suresh’s parents have attached ear lobes. What type of ear lobe can be seen in Suresh and his
sister Siya? Explain by giving the genetic composition of all
39. Back in 1819, the Danish physicist Hans Oersted was performing a lecture demonstration for
some students and noticed that a compass needle moved whenever current flowed in a nearby
wire.
Further investigation of this phenomenon convinced Oersted that an electric current could
somehow cause a magnetic force. He reported this finding to an 1820 meeting of the French
Academy of Science.
Soon after this report, Oersted's investigations were repeated and expanded upon by other
scientists. Among those whose work was especially important were Jean-Baptiste Biot and Felix
Savart, who investigated the forces exerted on magnets by currents, Andre Marie Ampere, who
studied the forces exerted by one current on another. The Biot-Savart Law is an equation that
7
describes the magnetic field created by a current-carrying wire, and allows you to calculate its
strength at various points.
(i) What is the shape of the magnetic field produced around a straight wire carrying current? (ii)
Mention two factors on which the strength of the magnetic field produced by a current carrying
conductor depends on.
(iii) Write two properties of magnetic field lines.
OR
