1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions:
The ancient city of Pompeii was buried under volcanic ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted
in 79 AD. The city was forgotten for over 1,700 years, until its rediscovery in 1748. Today, Pompeii is
one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world.
The eruption of Mount Vesuvius caught the people of Pompeii by surprise. Many of them were trapped
in their homes, shops, and temples. The ash and pumice that rained down on the city were so hot that
they killed everyone in their path. The city was buried under a thick layer of ash, which hardened over
time to form a kind of concrete.
As a result, many of the buildings, artifacts, and even the bodies of the people were preserved.
Archaeologists have uncovered a wealth of information about life in ancient Pompeii, including its
culture, architecture, and daily life.
