Example 1
The figure shows a semicircle and a 45° sector. Show that regions 𝐴 and 𝐵 are of equal
area. Take 𝜋 = 3.14.
Practice
1. Four identical circles are embedded in a big circle of radius 6 cm, as shown in the
diagram below. Find the area of the shaded region. Take 𝜋 = 3.14.

2. In diagram below, the 4 small circles are identical, and the diameter of a small circle is
the radius of the big circle. Find the difference between the areas of the coloured
regions and the shaded regions. Take 𝜋 = 3.14.
3. In the diagram below, regions 𝑋 and 𝑌 are of equal area and 𝐴𝐵𝐶 is a right-angled
triangle. Given that 𝐵𝐶 = 40 𝑐𝑚, find the length of 𝐴𝐵, in 𝑐𝑚. Take 𝜋 = 3.14.

4. In the diagram below, 𝐴𝐵𝐶 is a right-angled triangle where ∠𝐷𝐴𝐶 = 60°. The sector
𝐴𝐶𝐷 is drawn using 𝐴𝐷 as its radius. Given that the shaded area is 6𝜋 𝑐𝑚2 , find the
length of 𝐴𝐵.

6. The figure below shows a right-angled triangle 𝐴𝐵𝐶 and a semicircle with diameter
𝐴𝐵. Given that 𝐴𝐵 = 10𝑐𝑚 and 𝐵𝐶 = 5 𝑐𝑚, find the area of the shaded region. Take
𝜋 = 3.14.

Example 3
In the figure below, 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 and 𝐷𝐸𝐵𝐹 are parallelograms, 𝐴𝐷 = 8 𝑐𝑚, 𝐴𝐵 = 10 𝑐𝑚,
∠𝑂𝐴𝐵 = 30° and 𝐶𝐻 = 4 𝑐𝑚. The radii of arcs 𝐵𝐸 and 𝐷𝐹 are 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐶𝐷, respectively.
The radii of arcs 𝐷𝑀 and 𝐵𝑁 are 𝐴𝐷 and 𝐶𝐵, respectively. Find the area of the shaded
region. Take 𝜋 = 3.14.

7. In the figure below, 𝑂 is the centre of the circle, 𝐶𝐷 ⊥ 𝐴𝐵, 𝐴𝐵 = 10 𝑐𝑚 and arc 𝐴𝐸𝐵
has centre 𝐶. Find the area of the shaded region 𝐴𝐸𝐵𝐷.
