Title: Scalars and Vectors
Bell Question Power
Force
Name as many words you
would only hear in physics
as you can….
Energy
Title: Scalars and Vectors 16/09/2024

 LO1 Students can state some scalar and vector quantities.

Key words
 LO2 Students can describe the difference between scalars and
vectors.

 LO3 Students can calculate the length and direction of a vector.

Title: Scalars and Vectors 16/09/2024
Starter
• Define the following:

• Speed

• Velocity

• Acceleration
Title: Scalars and Vectors 16/09/2024
Starter
• Define the following:

• Speed – How fast an object is

travelling
• Velocity - Speed with a
direction
• Acceleration – The rate of
change of velocity

Scalars and Vectors

Energy
• In physics all quantities are either scalar
or vector.

• If only the number is important they are

scalar.

• If they also have a direction they are

vector. Vectors can be negative but
scalars can’t.
Force

Scalars and Vectors

Quantity Scalar or Vector?
Distance
Displacement
Speed
Can it be negative?
Velocity
Acceleration If Yes -> Vector
If No -> Scalar
Extension: Are these scalar or vector?
Force, Time, Temperature, Weight, Energy, Temperature is the exception that proves
Power, Momentum. there is a rule.

Scalars and Vectors

Quantity Scalar or Vector?
Distance Scalar
Displacement Vector
Speed Scalar
Velocity Vector
Acceleration Vector
Extension
Scalar: Time, Power, Energy, Temperature,
Vector: Force, Weight, Momentum.
LO2: Describe difference between scalars and vectors.

• Magnitude is size and is

represented with a
number.

• Scalars have magnitude

only.

• Vectors have magnitude Force

and direction.
LO3: Calculate the length and direction of a vector.

• To calculate the displacement

of the train you need to
calculate the distance directly
between A and B.

• You may have to convert

using the scale provided.

• You can also calculate the

direction.
LO3: Calculate the length and direction of a vector.

Answer in your books Zoe

• If Zoe walks from A to B then
to C:
• What distance has she
travelled?
• What is her displacement from
the start?
• If she then returns directly to
A, what is Zoe’s new
displacement?
LO3: Calculate the length and direction of a vector.

Answer in your books Zoe

• If Zoe walks from A to B then
to C:
• What distance has she
travelled? 7m
• What is her displacement from
the start? 5m
• If she then returns directly to
A, what is Zoe’s new
displacement? 0m
State: Definitions Calculate: Exam Question
What is the displacement between Town A and Town B in
Scalars are quantities with only m___________. metres?
What is the direction?
Vectors are quantities with magnitude and d___________.

Distance is a s______ quantity. Displacement is a vector as it is

distance with d_________.

Speed is a scalar quantity. Velocity is s______ with direction so

it is a v________.

Identify: Scalar or Vector?

Circle the vectors and underline the scalars.

Distance
Temperature Displacement between Town A and B _____ cm.
Velocity
Force 1cm = 5km (i.e. 12cm = 12 x 5 km = 60 km)
Acceleration
Magnetic Field Displacement between A and B = _____ km.
