Ecology-

Abiotic - non living part of an ecosystem that shapes its environment

Atmosphere- layers of gases surrounding a planet or other celestial body

Biodiversity- scientific study of the processes influencing natural life/

habitats

Biosphere- a global ecosystem composed of living organisms and the

abiotic factors from which they derive energy and nutrients

Biotic- living things within an ecosystem (planets, animals, and bacteria)

Carnivore- an organism that mostly eats meat, or the flesh of animals

Consumer- an organism that feed either directly or indirectly on producers

Decomposer- organisms that break down dead/ decaying organisms

Ecological footprint- method promoted by the Global Footprint Network to

measure human demand on natural capital

Ecosystem- a geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms

work together to form a bubble of life

Food chain- the sequence of transfers of matter and energy in the form of
food from organism to organism
Food pyramid- a graphical representation designed to show the biomass/
bioproductivity at each trophic level in an ecosystem

Food web- represents feeding relationships within a community

Geosphere- rocks, minerals, and landforms of the surface and interior

Habitat- where a species of organisms live/thrive

Herbivore- animals whose primary food is source is plant-based

Hydrosphere- includes water that is on the surface of the planet,

underground, and in the air

Omnivore- organisms that produce energy and nutrients for other

organisms

Photosynthesis- process by which plants convert light energy into

chemical energy for use in growth and cell repair

Population- a group of individuals that belong in the same species and live
in the same area

Predator- an organism that consumes all or part of the body of another

organism which is it’s prey

Prey- animals eaten by other animals

Producers- organisms that are able to make their own food through
photosynthesis or chemosynthesis

Sustainability- conserve the productivity of the waters, the soil and the
ecosystem and reduce impact on the natural environment
