Understanding the Roots of Procastination of Grade 10- Melina Students in Munoz

National High School

Hagel Rose V. Deiparine

Bsed Mathematics 4
Introduction

Background of the Study

Procrastination, commonly defined as the intentional delay of tasks despite potential

negative consequences, is a prevalent issue among students that affects academic

performance and overall well-being. Globally, procrastination has been associated with

various factors, including poor time management, low motivation, social media

distractions, and emotional regulation challenges. As students face increasing academic

and social pressures, understanding the root causes of procrastination becomes essential

in helping them achieve their educational goals. Research highlights that procrastination

is not simply a matter of laziness but a complex behavior influenced by both internal

factors, such as impulsivity and self-regulation, and external factors, such as family

support and academic expectations (Steel, 2007; Klassen et al., 2008).

In the Philippines, procrastination has also become a growing concern among high

school students, who experience unique social and educational pressures that contribute

to this behavior. Studies have shown that Filipino students often face challenges such as

anxiety, fear of failure, and limited parental support, which can increase tendencies

toward procrastination (Dela Cruz & Santos, 2019). Additionally, the rise of digital

platforms and social media has made it increasingly difficult for students to stay focused

on academic tasks. For instance, Garcia (2020) found that distractions from social media

and inadequate time management significantly affected high school students' productivity

in Metro Manila. As Filipino students, particularly those in secondary school, are at a

critical stage in their educational development, identifying and addressing the factors

contributing to procrastination is vital.

This study specifically focuses on Grade 10 Melina students at Muñoz National High

School, aiming to explore the root causes of procrastination within this context. By

examining local and contextual factors, such as social media influence, time management

issues, and academic stress, this research seeks to provide a detailed understanding of

why procrastination occurs among these students. Furthermore, this study aims to

develop culturally responsive strategies to reduce procrastination, improve time

management, and support academic achievement among Grade 10 students. Addressing

procrastination within this group is not only essential for fostering a productive learning

environment but also aligns with the Department of Education’s mission to cultivate

responsible and goal-oriented learners in the Philippines.

Rationale of the Study

Procrastination is a common issue among high school students and can have serious

effects on their school performance and personal growth. While some people may think

of procrastination as just laziness, research shows that it is often caused by a mix of

challenges, such as poor time management, low motivation, distractions from social

media, and emotional struggles like anxiety and fear of failure. These issues are

especially relevant for high school students who are at an important stage in their

education. For Grade 10 students in the Philippines, learning how to manage school tasks

and meet academic expectations is critical as they prepare for future studies or careers.

However, many students struggle with procrastination, which can affect their grades,

increase stress, and harm their well-being.

In Muñoz National High School, teachers have noticed that procrastination among

Grade 10 Melina students is impacting both individual success and the classroom

atmosphere. This group faces specific pressures, including the pull of social media, the

demands of schoolwork, and cultural expectations around education. Understanding these

students' particular challenges can provide important insights into why procrastination

happens in this setting. Although there are studies on procrastination from other

countries, there is limited research that focuses on what influences Filipino high school

students in particular.

This research aims to fill that gap by exploring the main causes of procrastination

among Grade 10 Melina students. By looking at factors like social media use, time

management struggles, and emotional stress, this study hopes to give teachers and school

leaders useful information to create effective ways to address procrastination. The

findings could help in creating practical strategies to reduce procrastination, helping

students build better study habits and reach their academic goals. This study supports the

Department of Education’s goal to improve students' productivity and responsibility,

showing the importance of tackling procrastination to enhance learning outcomes in the

Philippines.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to understand why Grade 10 Melina students at Muñoz

National High School tend to delay their school tasks. By looking at factors such as

distractions from social media, difficulties in managing time, and emotional challenges,

this research aims to find out what causes procrastination in this group. With these
insights, the study hopes to help teachers and school leaders create ways to support

students in managing their time better and reducing procrastination. The ultimate goal is

to help students develop good study habits, improve their school performance, and reduce

the stress that comes with doing things at the last minute.
