Prisms of Winter Concert

2024

All Performing Ensembles

Anthony Svejda, Patrick Pearson, Meredith McGuire,
and Brendon Culloton - Conductors

Thursday, December 12, 2024 – 7:00 pm

Friday, December 13, 2024 – 7:00 pm

OPRFHS AUDITORIUM
“Prisms of Winter”
The “Prisms of Winter Concert” is one of the Music
Department’s grandest events of the year. Before we begin, we
ask that you please turn off all electronic devices. Our students
have put many hours of work into making this an event to
remember. For the safety of you and our performers, once the
concert has begun, please refrain from walking in the aisles. We
want you to know that you could be sitting right next to a
performing ensemble at some point. Please be aware of this as the
performers make their way to the various spaces around the
auditorium. The format of the show does not allow breaks in
between each group so we ask that you please hold your applause
until the end of the final performance. At that time feel free to
show your appreciation. We hope you will allow the music to take
you to a place free of any worries or concerns and just sit back,
relax and absorb the sounds as the OPRF Music Program
presents the Prisms of Winter Concert”.

As always, thank you for your support.

We wish you and yours the happiest of holidays!

A Cappella - A note about Wade in the Water from Ms. McGuire

The A Cappella Choir has been selected as a featured performer at

the 2025 Illinois Music Educators Conference this January.
Preparation for this performance began in August and I’m
incredibly proud of these students for their hard work and
dedication throughout this semester. For this year’s Prisms of
Winter, A Cappella will perform their final piece from the January
IMEC set, Wade in the Water, arranged by Stacey V. Gibbs.

During the time that people were enslaved, Western African and
Western European musical traditions were merged to create a
musical style that is unique to the United States of America. Music
scholars consider spirituals to be the genesis of American music,
and it is from that music that other important American styles
emerged, including the blues, jazz, and rock and roll to name a few.
The message and symbolism woven into spirituals has continued to
be relevant throughout history, including serving an integral part
of the American Civil Rights Movement and to the current lived
experiences of many Americans.

As with all repertoire that we perform, it is important that we as

musicians take time to develop a deeper understanding of the
music that we sing and to make musical choices that are authentic
to the community from which the music comes. We would like to
thank Mr. Robert Sims, retired voice professor from Northern
Illinois University for spending time with us talking about the
history of spirituals. We would also like to thank Mr. Chris Joyner
from Rock Valley College & Columbia College for spending time
working with us on style and delivery.

SUPPORT YOUNG
MUSICIANS
PING! is a 25-year-old community nonprofit
organization providing band and orchestra
instruments, mentoring, workshops, and access to
lessons, music camps, and trips to students in need in
grades 4 through 12 in Oak Park and River Forest public
schools. PING! serves approximately 130 young
musicians annually, 70% people of color, bringing
diversity to instrumental music classrooms and
beyond, while providing access for all. In a community
with very high-quality school music programs, PING!
students can be on par with peers regardless of their
family situations and feel like they belong.
PING! is partially funded by the Oak Park Area Arts Council, in partnership with
the Village of Oak Park, the Illinois Arts Council Agency, the National Endowment
for the Arts, and other grantors.
