Activity # 9: Discuss and explain exhaustively Part E - Exemptions of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions
at Sea, 1972, as amended.
Activity # 10:Case Study - Collision at sea. Understanding and applying Rules of the Road
A bulk carrier and a container ship approaching each other at full sea speed in open water. A bulk carrier is
steering 310 deg (T) at 15 knots about NW and the container ship is steering 130 deg (T) at 23.7 knots about SE. At this
stage, the closes point of approach (CPA) was determined by RADAR/ARPA at 0.45 nautical miles passing green to green
meaning starboard to starboard at position No.1, and at position No. 2 the two vessels is about 4,8 nautical miles away from
each other at this stage the container ship altered her course 6 deg to starboard while the bulk carrier altered her course 5
deg to port, then at position No. 3 when the vessels are about 2.5 away from each other the container ship altered her
course 5 deg to starboard while the bulk carrier altered her course 10 deg to port.
Finally when it was too late and just before the collision occurs the container ship make a major alteration 18 deg to
starboard and the bulk carrier ordered 50 deg to port at position No. 4 but unfortunately it was too late and the two vessels
collided. Luckily there were no casualties but there was major structural damage to the vessels.
I. Discuss and explain exhaustively by applying the rules of the road to support your answer to the following questions;
3. Who is responsible for the collision incident and how many degrees they are responsible?
