BUZZ Converse
Vikas Kumar Dey asks – According to Faraday’s law, emf induced in a closed coil will be equal to the rate of
change of flux associated with it. So, to calculate the flux we need an area which is enclosed by the closed loop.
But as we know that when the loop is open, an emf is produced across the ends of the loop. In this case which
area of the loop is to be considered to calculate the flux because the loop is not closed and we can not define the
area of loop.
Prof H C Verma responds to the query which is already being asked by hundreds of students and teachers.
HCV: Basic Faraday’s law is that if we integrate E. dl on a closed loop then it is equal to minus of the rate of
𝑑𝜑
change of magnetic flux (∮ 𝐸. 𝑑𝑙 = − ). As Vikas says, yes, this flux is defined only when we have a closed
𝑑𝑡
loop that is why the LHS of the Faraday’s law equation itself has an integration on the closed loop. This ∮ 𝐸. 𝑑𝑙
is called emf . If this electric field is the driving force and when the magnetic field changes, this flux changes.
When the magnetic field changes, it creates an electric field or the loop itself is moving and the magnetic flux is
changing then we have motional emf. So this is the basic equation, and if we have an open loop then this
equation does not apply. In that case we can not calculate the flux and we can not calculate this integration.
I give you a very simple example. Suppose I have an open wire and there is confined magnetic field which
changes with time. I may have a very long solenoid so that the magnetic field is only in the cylindrical volume
and not outside as shown in the adjacent diagram no 1. That magnetic field is changing and due to this change
we can see some phenomenon. Now if I connect some circuit as in diagram no 2. If some LED is connecting the
circuit, meanwhile the magnetic field is changed then the LED will glow.
But if I connect the LED between the same two points but as shown in the diagram no. 3 then the LED will
not glow. Because if we consider the closed loop in the third diagram, there is not any changing magnetic field
in this closed loop and thus there is no flux change. So emf is zero. There is no driving force in this case and the
LED does not glow.
So, we must understand that the emf is not generated between
two points A and B. As you have seen that between the same
two ends of the wire, if we connect the LED on one side, it
glows but if we connect it on the other side, it does not glow. So emf comes only when we have a closed loop.

* अथ श्री न्यूट्रिनो कथा*

ATHA SHREE NEUTRINO KATHA

Let’s start with the neutrino Katha(story). The word neutrino and its concept started fascinating me when I first
learned about beta decay for the first time during my undergraduate education. Since then, I have found them
really interesting. Even though I got trained in nuclear physics for my
PhD, I haven't done any research on neutrinos. But it keeps me attached. I
am very interested and pay close attention whenever there are new
developments about what's happening in this field. That's how I am going
to deliver this talk.
Here the dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjun is being described in
which Lord Krishna responds as a teacher and queries asked by Arjun as a
disciple, where everyone is prepared with their weapons in battleground.
Arjun is in the state of dilemma and not able to understand what he
should do and what he should not do. In this situation Lord Krishna
solved all the problems of Arjun and gave an interesting sermon to Arjun. The dialogues are …

:: Pratham Adhyaya ::*(First Chapter)

अर्जु न उवाच (Arjun asked):- O Lord, I am deeply puzzled, I do not understand what this universe is. Kindly tell
me, what this universe is made of? Who were the great souls who had this realization?
श्री भगवान उवाच (Sri Krishna responded ):- Dear Arjun, most of what you see is made of electrons, protons and
neutrons.
(In fact, this line is a message for the teachers of modern times. The inclusion of ‘most of’ signifies that a teacher
must tell the student according to student’s level and not his/her level. Nothing untruth is to be told but a skill is
to be applied in telling what exactly to tell so that it is understood in the same sense.)
Lord Krishna continued, Rishis-Munis(saints-monks) of all ages had struggled hard to get this divine knowledge.
However here are some who were given the blessings to
discover these particles.
These great rishis were – Sant (saint) Shri J J
Thomson ji Maharaj, Sant Shri Rurherford ji
Maharaj and Sant shri J. Chadwik ji Maharaj.
अर्जनु उवाच:- You said "Most of it". Are there other
particles too?
श्री भगवान उवाच:- As the world is governed by three
qualities- सतोगणु , रजोगुण एवम ् तमोगण ु
(Satogun, Rajogun, Tamogun).
Similarly the particles world has Quarks, Leptons and Interaction Bosons.

The Anveshika Buzz November 2024 Page 3

Lord Krishna tells about the standard model of elementary particles. There are quarks, leptons and
bosons. Then there are such particles which may be found by anyone. I created lot many particles
and made them available to all.
Electron is created by me for lighting humanity when no sun shines. Proton ( three quarks) has
been created to hold electrons in atoms. The neutrons ( Three quarks) have been created so that
two protons may live together.
And what do you think why the neutrinos have been created. Has it been created to keep wise
people guessing?
Moreover, apart from these sarva-sulabh (easily accessible) particles there are durlabh (rare)
particles, to get them rigorous efforts were required. It is just like Tapasya of the highest level
required on a lighter note. These particles are muons, tau, mesons ( two quarks), anti particle and
Higgs Boson etc.
Now the next question has sparked Arjun.
अर्जनु उवाच:- I am getting interested in Neutrinos. Electrons, protons and neutrons are there in atoms of all materials
that I see or feel. Where do I find the neutrinos?

:: Iti Prathama Adhyaya :: ( This completes the first chapter)

:: Dwitiya Adhyaya :: (Second Chapter)

श्री भगवान उवाच:- Neutrinos are everywhere as far as you can see this world. I am everywhere but you don't feel me.
Neutrinos are in front of you, but you do not feel them ( This is the characteristic of neutrino). Neutrinos are my most
favourite and I created them in largest number. Almost 1086 neutrinos are dancing in the cosmos and every moment new
neutrinos are added.
( Lord Krishna is also vey excited to tell about the neutrinos, as the disciple is showing curosity)
अर्जन
ु उवाच:- I am getting restless. If they are here in so many numbers, why am I not observing them?
श्री भगवान उवाच:- Not only they are in front of you, They are hitting you with a speed of several lakhs of kilo-meters per
second. I made them in such a way that tens of billions of them pass through every square centimeter of your body per
second and still you do not notice them.

“No wall can stop neutrino and no water can make it wet.
No fire can burn it and no wind can blow it.”

नैनं छिन्दन्न्त शस्त्राणण नैनं दहछत पावकः।

न चैनं क्लेदयन््यापो न शोषयछत मारुतः॥
It can not be cut by a weapon, nor it can it be burned by fire. No water can moisten it and it is not withered by the wind.
अर्जन
ु उवाच:- Oh Lord ! please tell me in detail, how neutrinos hit me and still I do not feel it. How people got to know
about neutrinos if neutrinos do not affect them.
श्री भगवान उवाच:- You are the right person whom I will show the VIRAT ROOP of neutrino. Listen the story carefully.

:: Iti Dwitiya Adhyaya :: (That completes second chapter)

:: Tritiya Adhyaya ::(Third Chapter)

श्री भगवान उवाच:-
There were some questions in 1920s :
:- Who has stolen the Energy?
:- Who has stolen the linear momentum?
:- Who has stolen the Angular Momentum?

Scientists had known beta decay and equipment to measure atomic masses
of nuclei and energies of beta particles.

It was 1930 ;
Rishi(saint) Neils Bohr, who had Siddhi(attainment) from Hydrogen Dev,
devised the Mantra(formula) of Statistical conservation law But Rishi Pauli
got a Divya Sandesh(divine information) from Me and he proposed existence of a chargeless
particle, produced with the beta particles,

Paulis particle saved :-

:-homogeneity of space
:-isotropy of space
:-homogeneity of time

The Anveshika Buzz November 2024 Page 4

It was 1933 ;
The great Saint Shri Enrico Fermi worked out theory of interaction of Pauli's proposed particle
with other matter and gave it the name neutrino.
The interaction was too weak and it was very difficult to detect them with the worldly equipment
that the humans are given.
In described as, Mean free path in water,10 times distance between the Sun and the Earth.
The search began …..
:: Iti Tritiya Adhyaya ::
(That completes the third chapter)

:: Chaturtha Adhyaya :: (Fourth Chapter)

श्री भगवान उवाच:- It was 1956 ;
O Arjun, those who do Karma sincerely without fearing of achieving or failing the
goal, (कममण्येवाधिकारस्त्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन । मा कममफलहे तुर्म
ुम ाम ते संगोऽस्त््वकममणण) are my
true Bhaktas(devotee) and I give them divine happiness.

Neutrino gave first DARSHAN(sight) to Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan who
did decades of Tapasya (rigor ) for it.
It was 1956 when the rishis Reines, Cowan and other rishis (saints) did
Mahayagya. (Great yajna)
The Yagya Samagree (material) - 200 liters of water, 40 kg of Cdcl2, 110
Scintillator Photomultiplier tubes.
Sacred Place for the Yagya:
Savannah River Plant, Georgea, 11m from a nuclear reactor, 12 m underground

Yagya arrangement:

अर्जन
ु उवाच:- Lord Krishna, you have opened my inner vision and I can see how the neutrinos discovered by Saint Reins
and Saint Cowan makes the world complete.
श्री भगवान उवाच:- The world made by me is full of surprises. People in grip of Maya(illusion) think that they know
everything of the world. But Gyani people know that knowledge in infinite and keep searching for more and more. Now let
me tell you how my Param Bhakt (great devotee) Lederman brought the divine knowledge of Muon neutrino to the
mankind.
:: Iti Chaturtha Adhyaya ::
(That completes the fourth chapter)

:: Pancham Adhyaya :: (Fifth Chapter)

It was 1962 ,
Sant Shree Lederman, Malwin Schwartz and Jack Steinberg performed a grand
yagya at Brookhaven and discovered another flavour of neutrino- muon nutrino

अर्जन
ु उवाच:- Oh Lord, it is getting more and more mysterious. I am dying to
know what is muon and muon neutrino and how these are produced. Please tell me
and satisfy my thirst.

The Anveshika Buzz November 2024 Page 5

श्री भगवान उवाच:- Those who are not inquisitive, who are not trained to look through the beauty of Nature, see only
electrons, protons and neutrons. But those who are dedicated to my creation, gain the happiness of discovering more and
more beauty of nature.
Carl D. Anderson and Seth Neddermeyer at Caltech were such SADHAKs who couldfind muon, in 1936.
Muon is a particle about 207 times heavier than electrons and about 9 times lighter than proton. It contains the same charge
and spin as an electron.

अर्जन
ु उवाच:- O Lord Krishna, neutrino is not interacting with materials as it did not have charge and negligible mass.
But not so with muon, why do I not see muons as often as electrons?

श्री भगवान उवाच:- I made electrons in good numbers and with absolute stability so that there are numerous variety of
material to sustain and increase the wisdom.
But muons come in existence only in specific cases and that too for a short time of few microseconds. But those who have
submitted their KARMAs to Me, can do wonders in this short lifetime of 5 microsecond.
Karma Yogi Lederman, Schwartz and Steinberger slammed protons (15 GeV) into beryllium to produced pions which
decayed to form neutrinos and muons .
The Yagya Kund(yagya pot) was made of Aluminium plates (10 tons) at high voltages and only neutrinos were to be offered
in this Kund to get their Darshan.
The whole beam was made to pass through 13 m of steel plates which stopped everything but the tiny but mighty neutrinos.
Neutrino Devs were pleased and gave Darshan through the reaction.

It was 2000 ;
Tau Neutrino Detected
A beam of Neutrino fired on a meter of thick iron plates.
Occasionally, one tau neutrino of 1012 interacted with iron and produced tau particles which got detected in the emulsion
this was happened in Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
:: Iti Pancham Adhyaya ::
(That completes the fifth chapter)

:: Shastham Adhyaya ::(Sixth Chapter)

अर्जनु उवाच:- Seems all neutrinos are manufactured by Sansarik(worldly) people. Are there NAISARGIK(natural) sources
of neutrino?

श्री भगवान उवाच:- The biggest source of energy is also the biggest source of neutrinos: Stars
And the closest to the Vashundhara (earth) is the Sun.

:: Iti Shastham Adhyaya ::

:: Iti Shastham Adhyaya ::

(That completes the sixth chapter)

:: Saptam Adhyaya :: (Seventh Chapter)

श्री भगवान उवाच:- These are the electron neutrinos, billions of which pass through every square cm of your body
every second.

TRYST with Physics
The Anveshika Buzz believes in creative and innovative thinking among the students. The students may add wings to their
learning outcomes when there is a scope of hand-on activities during the tryst with the approaches to simplify the concepts.
Starting from October 2024, the Anveshika Buzz has start a regular feature in which the students will have an opportunity
to think on a common concept as per the monthly announcement and the curious and enthusiastic students across India will
think simultaneously on the given topic and suggest the activities.
The students may think of an already prevailing experiment or activity but they are encouraged to think out of the box
regarding the same and incorporate innovative approaches in the activity/ experiment in hand.
The topic of the previous month was Newton’s laws of motion
Three commendable entries are:
1. Take a bottle with three holes at same level near its lower part of the lateral surface. If the bottle is placed at the table,
water starts coming out from the hole due to an unbalanced force. But when the same bottle is again filled with water and
dropped from a height, no water comes out from the holes. This is due to the fact that now bottle material as well water
are in the state of free fall as both are pulled by the gravity force. Now water is not in a hurry to reach ground because it
is already in the same state as that of the bottle. It is in the state of falling every time but never falls. The same happens
on the astronauts in outer space revolving around earth in space station.

– Shambhavi B. Shantilal Shah Engineering College, Bhavnagar, Gujarat.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

2. When a carrom coin (say A) is pushed towards another carrom coin bigger
in size (say B), the first coin (A) moves only after a force is applied on it. It
does not move as far as no force acts on it. Now when the coin A moves
towards the coin B and hits it, the coin B starts moving as it now
experiences a force applied by the coin A but at the same time the coin A is
seen rebounding. Some force must be responsible for this backward motion
of coin A. This force is applied by the coin A as a result of action reaction
pair explained by Newton’s third law of motion. Sometimes there is a
change in the direction of coin B also. Less the force, less is the rate of
change of the momentum of the coin.

– Aaditya Kumar, DAV Hehal Ranchi, Jharkhand.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

3. Is the force required to keep a body in motion? Newton’s cradle is made by gluing threads with
the seven glass marbles. When a marble on one side is raised a bit and released it hits the next
and causes the motion in the last marble at the opposite side. The last marble moves when it
experinces a pushing force but the motion damps soon due to the force of earth which exerts a
restoring force and it tends to return to equilibrium position. Three major laws of physics may be
inter related to describe its working, law of momentum conservation, law of energy conservation
and friction, apart from Newton’s laws of motion. Newton’s second law states that rate of
change of momentum is proporional to the applied force and this change in momentum is in the direction of prce.
During my Newton’s cradle designing when the marbles were not aligned along the line joining their centres, it was seen
that when the fiirst marble applied the force on the next, the the marble was directed to some sideways direction along
the apploed force and no marble of similar mass was moved from the other end so perfectly.

Whatever be the crystal formation pattern depending on the instantaneous conditions of temperature or to some
extent humidity, the crystal is always six sided. This frozen canvas of nature is not just simple frozen water around
a tiny particle but the formation originally conceived from a hexagonal shape and further growing of its branches
as portrayed by the atmospheric conditions mainly varying temperature is a resplendent and mesmerising process.

Straight from the Heart with The Anveshika Buzz

Straight from the heart is a series of The Anveshika Buzz (TAB) in which we invite a personality dedicated to Physics education.
TAB interacts with the personality of the month on diverse domains and presents the dialogue for the joy of our readers. The
experience, expertise and commitment to carry forward the vision and legacy will be an inspiration to our readers.
This month Editor of The Anveshika Buzz (TAB), Dinesh Kumar invited Dr Rakesh Awasthi (RA), the Anveshika Coordinator in
Agra, Uttar Pradesh for a talk and this straight from the heart dialogue is here for the readers. Dr Awasthi is leading IAPT and
Anveshika activities in Western Uttar Pradesh and is a close associate of Prof H C Verma, Padma Shree and an eminent physicist.

TAB: Namaste Dr Rakesh Awasthi. I welcome you in this special episode

‘straight from the heart’ with The Anveshika Buzz.
RA: Namaste Dinesh ji and dear readers, I heartily thank The Anveshika Buzz
for inviting me as the guest this month. It is really exciting to be with the
readers.
TAB: You have just returned from IISF in IIT Guwahati. How was your IISF
sojourn?
RA: It was a wonderful experience to visit India International Science Festival
-IISF at IIT Guwahati. This was my 6th IISF and I interacted with the audience through presentations and
lectures in various programs. IISF was a grand affair, very insightful, has very detailed arrangements in all
spheres and all fields were minutely worked in all aspects. It has a footfall of over 60 to 70 thousand eminent
scientists, researchers, students, public houses, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, Government agencies like CSIR,
DST, DRDO, INNOVATION centres who showcased their latest work and futuristic projects.
Apart from this a student science village, (This time named as Nalanda Village) has about 3000 students where
their teacher escorts from all remote parts of the country and even from the “first villages”. These students
represent a beautiful rainbow of the diverse colours of our country. When these children see the simple
experiments in all the subjects of sciences, mathematics, Indian heritage etc., the enthusiasm and the spark in
their eyes is worth watching.
TAB: You are spearheading the Anveshika activities since long. When the journey started?
RA: It was way back in February 2003 when I got associated with the first workshop of school teachers and then
“The Anveshika” the brain child of Prof. H. C. Verma ji and Dr R. N. Kapoor ji in the basement of a stage. Agra
chapter happens to be the first Anveshika to come out from Kanpur. So, it’s a more than two decades now on this
path.
TAB: What were your expectations when you first embraced Anveshika program?
RA: As learning is my hobby – I am a student always. I want to give back to the upcoming buds the little that I
may have learnt from my teachers that they may too bloom and shine on the horizon.
Starting Anveshika and the outreach programs were always a challenge then, due to scarcity of knowledge and
the mission behind it.
TAB: And how was the Anveshika journey throughout these years?
RA: It has been amazing and full of enthusiasm. It has taught me at various levels and still more to go. We
dream and live with physics now. It has changed the thought and perception all together.
TAB: Was there any specific reason to choose the name RAMAN for the Anveshika in Agra?
RA: I did my primary education from Bangalore and CV Ramana Institute was right across my school. C V
Raman was the only the first Indian physics scientist, the first Asian and the first non-white to win a Nobel Prize
in science. No other name could have been better than this.
TAB: What are the three areas of priority addressed by RAMAN anveshika under your leadership?
RA: 1. To motivate the utmost number of children to develop a passion for physics.
2. To teach physics in daily life to the masses.
3. To make them understand learning physics does not require big instruments.

The Anveshika Buzz November 2024 Page 16

4. To remove the fear and phobia of physics form the young student’s mind.
TAB: Approximately how many students and teachers have been associated in anveshika activities in this region
since its inception?
RA: Over one lakh students and 80,000 teachers across the globe. A significant number of students have visited
the Anveshika conducted under my care. I conduct about two programs a month on an average and about forty
plus students and 4 plus teachers are there on an average since 2003.
TAB: Can you recall some institutions which have been benefitted by Anveshika programs through RAMAN
Anveshika?
RA: Yes of course. Though I never tried such list but if I recall some institutions where RAMAN Anveshika has
tried the handprint, some names are-
1. Hindustan college of Engineering and Technology.
2. Anand college of Engineering and Technology
3. Akal Academy Group of Institutes.
4. National Academy of Science India,
5.Various programs of Vigyan Prasar and now Vigyan Bharti.
6. Various communication programs.
7. Indian council for Senior Certificate (ISC) schools and many other Series of
institution.
There is a long series of institutions across India where I visit every year.
TAB: How does RAMAN anveshika gets the support from National Anveshika Network of India?
RA: NANI and Raman Ashram are hand in gloves I should say and both of them complement each other.
TAB: Awasthi ji, you have extensively travelled in India to promote physics education. According to you, how
the anveshika activities help students towards a better learning in physics?
RA: Students get immense practical exposure and theoretical analysis ability through Anveshika programs and
also a “Do it yourself” attitude is developed. The intellect and wisdom of eminent physicists gives the student a
vision and dream to step into their shoes someday in the future.
I would like to quote students and teachers remarks latest from the IISF Guwahati,
“The fear of physics is gone”
“Now I will pursue my career in Physics’
“We have seen the impossible”
“Had our teachers explained physics like this, we wouldn’t have taken any other subject”
TAB: What has been your approach for the teachers of Uttar Pradesh to build their capacity through Anveshika
programs?
RA: Truly speaking teachers of Uttar Pradesh are in a little more inertia of rest and need a greater force to
produce acceleration. This is just a general comment
and not applicable to all, I myself belong to Uttar
Pradesh. My effort is to be a bridge between them and
the Anveshika Programs and indicate for their greater
participation.
TAB: Pls share any experiment in brief which you love
to share with the students?
RA: The very first experiment that professor H. C.
Verma sir, showed me was of demonstration of 1 N (one
newton), That in fact was the turning point in my life
about looking at concepts in Physics and today I have reached this point.

The Anveshika Buzz November 2024 Page 17

TAB: Do you recall any interesting incident during the anveshika journey, which you intend to share with our
readers.
RA: Among the various incidents I would like to share one particular incident of 2010 Muzaffarpur, Bihar. I was
told that the teachers here are very restless and will not sit for more than an hour. I started the workshop at
9.00 am and this lot of teachers were not ready to leave even for a tea break and it continued till 3.00 pm with a
lot of requests by the organizers as the school was over at 1.30 pm.
Though two of the apparatuses got damaged, but it was nothing looking at the interest and enthusiasm of the
teachers and the commitment to perform hands on each set up.
TAB: From where Dr Awasthi derives the consistent motivation for this selfless cause?
RA: My motto in life is “To give back the utmost before dust mingles into dust”. Sharing at any and at all levels
and in any and every field enhances and in no way lessens learning and knowledge.
TAB: Any incident of complaint by the family members for being away from them due to anveshika activities?
RA: Never. I am lucky to be surrounded by wonderful persons as my family and close friends. They are very -
very supportive; without their unconditional support nothing could have been possible. My son has an
irreversible medical condition and a few times it has happened that in emergency conditions he has been
hospitalized when I was out of station and I was not informed due to my being away in involvement with the
Anveshika activities.
So definitely it is because of them [wife, daughter, son, and friends] that I many times freely pursue with these
activities.
TAB: How do you ensure balance between anveshika work, your job and personal time?
RA: Time Management, discipline, prioritize according to need and situation, stealing time from sleep & leisure.
“Hum chalte gaye aur karvan banta gaya”.
TAB: How you visualise Anveshika activities in Agra region by 2030?
RA: Vision is to see ANVESHIKA AGRA shining high on the horizon.
TAB: A single motivation, why a school in Agra region must associate with RAMAN Anveshika?
RA: To develop an informal - labs through Anveshika to help eradicate the fear and backlog in learning of physics
which develops at the junior level i.e. classes onwards.
TAB: Any dream project in process or in future?
RA: Looking forward to develop a “Raman – Ashram” in a village at home town, which will be capable of
handling hands on activities and a full-time devotion. As I have a complete set of instrumentations and only a
setup is required.
TAB: Best of luck for Raman- Ashram, Awasthi ji. Which challenge you perceive as a biggest challenge as an
Anveshika Coordinator?
RA: To eradicate the hesitation among the new person to understand that physics can be better taught and
learnt through basic instruments which are low cost or no cost and also through natural resources incorporating
into the Anveshika programs.
TAB: What message would you like to give to our readers?
RA: ‘ Ekla Chalo’ ya ‘Saath Chalo’ motto is “chalte Raho”, “The show must go on”…….
TAB: Thanks, Dr Awasthi for sparing your invaluable time for this talk.
RA: Thank you Dinesh ji for such a refreshing talk and sharing my view about Anveshika and its activities.
Pleasure and honour has been mine.
