Police are still investigating the fatal BELLEVILLE accident involving a 58-year-old Belleville woman in Canton Twp. Saturday.
Poor road conditions due to inclement weather look to be the major cause, but a final determination has yet to be made. It appears weather was a factor, said Canton Twp. Police Sgt. Pat Sullivan. The roads were icy and slushy. It appears she lost control and hit the retain-
ing wall and slid back into traffic and hit the other car. The woman was driving a 2003 Lincoln and the other vehicle was a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe. The driver of the Santa Fe, a 50-year-old man from West Bloomfield, was treated for minor injuries and
released from the hospital the same day. The accident occurred at 11:15 a.m. on I-275 on the Michigan Avenue overpass. The area received about five inches of snow the night before. Police have not released the name of the woman. Copy editor Joe Gray can

See Page 3-A for a Letter to the Editor regarding the LDFA
bylaws, including a restriction limiting to 30 minutes the total input from the public, and a requirement for 48 hours advance notice for a resident to speak at the LDFA meeting. In the recent meeting Feb. 6, township resident John Delaney said that until Visteon filed for bankruptcy, possibly jeopardizing their ability to make ongoing property tax payments to enable the township to continue to make payments on its bonds, the attendees of the LDFA meeting were confined
primarily to LDFA officials. Visteon was the primary beneficiary of about $30 million of LDFA bonds, a liability on the townships books. The new bylaws also called for no debate among officials or residents on comments by the public, and there ensued a discussion on what constituted debate versus discussion and whether debate was helpful. Trustee Jeff Jahr said, I think when you get into response, it sometimes degenerates into debate. Jahr distinguished between a citizens right to address the meeting but not to participate in the meeting, the preserve of LDFA appointed officials.
Township resident and Public Safety Committee member Diane Madigan said the LDFA bonds will cost township taxpayers $55 million and will not be paid off until 2032. She said the LDFA cancelled nine of its 12 meetings that were planned for 2011. Township officials agreed that before returning to the Board of Trustees, the item should first be approved by the LDFA representatives in a formal meeting and that the document should first be vetted by the township attorney.
