Authentic Task
Explore the role of organic compounds in everyday life

Aim: To explore the importance of organic compounds in our daily use materials.

1. Students have to work in groups of three.


2. They have to research and prepare a project report file about any 5 organic compounds that are present in
the chemicals we use daily. They can choose from the following categories.
a. Hair Care products
b. Kitchen chemistry
c. Skincare products
d. Cleaning products

3. The report should include


● IUPAC name
● Molecular and structural formula
● Common name (If any)
● Homologous series/ family it belongs to
● How is it obtained (natural or artificially prepared)
● Commonly used in preparing
● Its function
● Its side effects (if any)

For example, the students will identify any one organic compound present in hair shampoo and present all the
above-stated information about the identified organic compound.
