Where to Start for Beginners
This pattern is designed with beginners in mind. But you may need some prior experience
in crochet to get started with this pattern. I’ve included a full length video tutorial for
this pattern (linked on the previous page) that will go through every single stitch and
technique needed in detail, I highly encourage crocheting along with that video if you are a
complete beginner.

If you need extra help, I’ve included a few pattern specific tutorials below from my starter
series, Crocheting 101: How to Crochet for Complete Beginners. If you’re having an
exceptionally difficult time, I suggest starting from the beginning of that series to learn all the
basics to this awesome craft. You can jump right in by clicking here.

Easy vs. Advanced Trex

Easy
Instructions

This pattern is designed with a series of completely

optional additions to change sections of the pattern
to add details to your T-rex such as teeth, a belly, and
toes. These are marked by purple boxes or page
outlines and are not recommended for beginner
crocheters, and I highly suggest crocheting along
with the bonus advanced video tutorials linked using
the time codes and any clickable icons in this PDF. Advanced

Pattern starts here
(05:40)

T-Rex Head *Follow the notes in Purple squares to add

[Starting in Main Color] Ch 4 optional advanced additions to your Trex.

Rnd 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc into the next 2 chs, make 3 sc into the next st,
turn 180º and work along the bottom of the ch, sc into the next 1 ch, inc into last ch
and slst into the first st of the Rnd (8)

Note: The new Rnd starts after the slst.

Work into the slst for the last st in Rnd 2

Rnd 2: [sc 1, inc 3] 2 times (14)

Rnd 3: sc 1, [sc 1, inc 1] 3 times,

sc 1, [sc 1, inc 1] 3 times (20)

Rnd 4: sc 5, inc 1, sc 1, inc 1, sc 12 (22)

Rnd 5: sc in each (22)

To add nostrils, replace Rnd 5 with the following:

Rnd 5B: sc 6, nostril (working into the st from the round above dc 1),
sc 2, nostril, sc 12 (22)

Rnd 6: sc in each (22)

To add an upper lip, replace Rnd 6 with the following:

Rnd 6B: sc 3, working in FLO sc 11, sc 8 (22)

For Rnd 7, work into the unused BLO to leave the lip on the outside.

Rnd 7: sc 4, invdec 2, sc 1, invdec 2, sc 9 (18)

Rnds 8 - 9: sc in each (18 x 2)

Add eyes into Rnd 5, sts 4 and 14.

*Purple used as a
running st marker.
5
Adding Teeth (1:27:55)

If you added a lip to your T-Rex (by replacing with Rnd 6B),
you'll want to start by adding teeth to the corners of the mouth.

Teeth (make 2):

Ch 3, skip 2 chs and pull tight, sc 1 in 3rd ch. Ch 1, cut the
yarn and pull through leaving somewhat long ends to use for
attaching.

Attach the teeth by pulling your tail ends through 2 adjacent sts
under the corner of the lips, and knotting on the inside. You can
use a needle for this, but this can be done more easily by using
your hook. Attach a tooth in each corner of the mouth.

To add a color change option to add a belly see alternative instructions on page 9.

T-Rex Body (33:14) arm = ch 3, skip 2 and pull tight,

slst 1, ch 2, skip and pull tight,
Rnd 10: sc 4, [arm, sc 7] 2 times (18 +2 arms) working into the same ch, slst 1
Rnd 11: working around arms, sc 16, inc 1, sc 1 (19)

Rnd 12: sc 16, inc 1, sc 1, inc 1 (21)

Rnd 13: sc 18, inc 2, sc 1 (23)

Rnd 14: sc 4, leg, sc 6, leg, sc 7, inc 1, sc 3 (24)

For a leg there are two options, see the advanced option on page 8. (48:18)
For an easier option we'll work a bulky bobble stitch into the Rnd above (Rnd 12).

Bulky Bobble Stitch (aka bbo) (5dctog):

• Step 1: Yarn over and insert hook into the stitch (Rnd 12 above).
• Step 2: Yarn over again and pull through.
• Step 3: Yarn over a 3rd time and pull through only 2 loops.
• Step 4: Repeat steps 1 – 3 five times total for a bulky bobble stitch.
• Step 5: Yarn over and pull through all the loops on the hook

Pro tip: Use more of a scooping motion when pulling through to more easily finish the stitch.

Rnd 15: sc 2, [invdec 1, sc 1] 4 times (20 stopping early)

Cut the yarn leaving a long end for sewing, and pull
through. Stuff mostly.

To sew closed, thread the end on a needle. Skip 11 sts,

fold tail in half and seem together adjacent stitches
up to the tip of the tail. Then work back down to pull
through the last st made leaving 8 sts unsewn.

Stuff fully, make sure to stuff into the tail.

Finish sewing closed by working into the last 8 FLO,

pull tightly to close, and work the end back into the
body to hide it.

Try stuffing with added weight by using some heavy

coins like nickels or magnets so they can stand on anything metal!

7
Advanced Leg Option (1:53:30)

For a more advanced leg in the next section (all worked into the same st):
•Step 1: [yo and insert into the st from the Rnd above,
yo and pull through, yo and pull through 2]
•Step 2: Repeat once
•Step 3: with the loops still on the hook ch 2, skip the first ch and slst 1
•Step 4: Repeat Steps 1 - 3
•Step 5: Repeat Step 1. You should have 6 loops on the hook.
•Step 6: yo and pull through all the loops.

Pro tip: Place a stitch marker in the st after the leg so you know
where to put your hook next. This stitch can often end up hidden by the leg.

Spikes (2:09:03)
[All in Color B]

Ch 3, skip the first ch, sc2tog in next 2 chs,

[ch 4, skip the first ch, sc2tog in next 2 chs] repeat 4 times for 5 spikes total

Ch 1, cut the yarn and pull through.

Sew this onto the back starting in the top of the head and working parallel down to the tail.
Work around each section between spikes, each 2 Rnds apart, to secure.

See video for detailed instructions.

Advanced Optional Color Changes
To add a belly to your T-Rex, use color changes in Rnds 10 - 14. Keep note of the color
changes marked in [Brackets] to know when to change colors in the replacement Rnds. We'll
be using half-color changes in Rnd 10 to make a cleaner edge to the belly.

For a half-color changes marked with A/B (ex: 1 Red/Blue), make the pull through
finishing the previous sc with the first color (Red), and next with the second color (Blue).
