LESSON

Lesson 1 Safety and First Aid

Introduction

Accidents happen, especially during sports. While it may be possible to limit

the number and severity of injuries with prevention strategies, one wrong step or a
collision on the field can result in a sudden and painful injury.
Almost all accidents or injuries that children have are related to sports and
recreational activities. Moreover, an individual engaged to a specific sport is prone to
injuries and accidents. Hence, it is everybody’s duty to have a sound knowledge of
safety procedures and first aid. Safety procedures are means to prevent accident,
while first aid is done to treat those injured if an accident occurs.

Safety for all should be secured, although accidents will happen anytime or
anywhere so it is important that people have safety awareness for prevention of such
injuries/accidents.

Safety and First Aid

Definition of Terms

Safety. The condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or
injury (Oxford Dictionary)

The state of being safe; freedom from the occurrence or risk of injury, danger, or loss.
(Freedictionary.com)

The state of being "safe" (from French sauf), the condition of being protected from
harm or other non-desirable outcomes. Safety can also refer to the control of
recognized hazards in order to achieve an acceptable level of risk. (Wikipedia)

SAFETY

Examples of Safety Procedures at Home

1. .Keep a distance between flammable objects (papers, curtains, plastics, etc.)
and fire sources (oven, stove top, portable heater, etc.)
2. Never leave sharp objects (knives) or other similar tools and utensils
misplaced or unattended.
3. Ensure electrical cords aren’t draped across other appliances or the counter or
stove top.
4. Use non-slip strips or floor mats.
5. Keep steps clean and dry.
6. Have easy access to important phone numbers.
Safety Procedures in School
1. Walk, do not run in the hall or stairways.
2. Don’t push people while walking.
3. Always keep right while walking in corridors or stairways
4. Keep classroom aisle clear.
5. Don’t use equipment without authorization.
6. Don’t go to unauthorized places
7. Abide by school rules on proper conduct.
First Aid. First aid is the first and immediate assistance given to any person suffering
from either a minor or serious illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life,
prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery.
Roles of First Aid

https://tinyurl.com/ybmcyds9 https://tinyurl.com/y8bm2awb

• It is the bridge that fills the gap between victim and the physician.

https://tinyurl.com/y7ajmgf7

• It ends when the services of the physician begins.

https://tinyurl.com/y93nl4hj

• It is not intended to compete with nor take the place of a physician.

Objectives of First Aid
• To preserve life
If a life-threatening situation does exist, the first aider should have knowledge
of procedures to keep the casualty alive.
• To protect the unconscious
A casualty should be isolated from all further dangers and placed in a position
where his or her injury or illness will not become worse.
• To prevent injury or illness from becoming worse
The casualty’s injuries or illness should be attended to in order to prevent
complications arising from his or her injury or illness (i.e. broken bones should be
immobilized, bleeding should be controlled).
• To promote recovery
A first aider can speed recovery of the casualty by reassuring him or her,
keeping him or her comfortable and arranging for emergency care (that is, ringing an
ambulance). This point is very important. Even though the first aid delivered by a
skilled person can save lives, it cannot indefinitely keep the casualty alive if the injury
or illness is serious.

• To procure medical aid

In most cases, there will be a need for qualified medical assistance; therefore,
this must be a major priority. If there are bystanders, they should be sent to seek
urgent medical advice. If you are alone, you must attend to the casualty first and then
seek medical help as soon as possible. Whoever is sent to seek medical advice must
be aware of the correct procedure for calling any emergency service or assistance. The
message should be brief yet contain all essential information about the accident or
incident. This information may seem obvious now, but under pressure or panic many
calls are useless because callers fail to give all relevant information.

Characteristic of a Good First Aider

1. Observant - should notice all signs
2. Resourceful - makes use of things at hand
3. Gentle - should not cause pain
4. Tactful - should not alarm the victim
5. Sympathetic - should be comforting
6. Cheerful - inspires and develops confidence

accident without fault or intention of causing it” is exempt from criminal liability
