STENGHTENING AGRICULTURAL SECTOR: IMPOSING FOOD

SECURITY

(CRITIQUE PAPER)

“Sa kabila ng mga hamon na ating kinakaharap, nasaksihan natin ang

pinakamataas na ani ng palay sa bansa nitong nakalipas na taon.” –
President Marcos, SONA 2024. This statement shows how productive and
progressive are agricultural sector is during Marcos Administration. On how
the government played its role on serving the nation and prioritize the needs
of farmers through providing support . But what made me curious about is do
simple citizen like me can feel the what they so called “productive and
progressive” agriculture?

In recent years, the government gave millions of seeds, sprouts, and

fertilizers to our local farmers. They also gave more than 300,000 of chicken
hands for breeding. They distributed 500 million fingerlings to our fishermen
and 3,000 boats that can be used in fishing. The government provided cold
storages and improve fish ports, so that our fishermen can produce huge
amount of fish and seafood’s to the market. They invested on research and
development to improve our technology that can be used in farming.

Another action that the government doing is preparing for the release
of vaccine for African Swine Fever (ASF) to lessen the burden of our farmers
in raising pigs. These are just few examples on how the Marcos
administration show their full support to strengthen our economy. Food
security is our biggest challenge. The booming of population keeps
increasing and our local farmers is an able to produce foods and products to
meet our needs.

Despite of the positive statement of our President Marcos on his SONA,

the Philippine Agricultural Sector’s stagnation is evident in the 0.3% annual
declined in crop production value, which nonetheless remains a significant
contributor ( 57.6%) to the sectors overall value. Palay production drop by
2.0% while livestock production, worth PhP 59.46 billion contracted by 3.6%,
Contributing 13.9% to the total value. Conversely, poultry production
increase by 5.9% reaching PhP 68.76 billion, and accounting for 16.0% of the
total value. Fisheries production, valued at PhP 53.73 billion, decreased by
1.3%, representing 12.5% of the total production value- Philippine Statistic
Authority (PSA).

Our farmers are still crying for help. “for so many years, the local
agricultural sector is neglected.” - former agriculture secretary Leonardo
Montemayor. It is a living fruit that we are still in the midst of crisis when it
comes to food security. The government, although there are many
amendment projects are still lacking for a support. The prices of our
agricultural products in the market keeps rising. The consequences of
insufficient supply extend beyond economic strain, affecting overall prices
stability and the well-being of Filipino children. High food prices this
proportionately affect the poor and contribute to hunger, malnutrition, and
stunting, hindering the attainment of our development goals. ( NEDA, 2024)

In conclusion, the government play a very important role when it

comes to stabilizing our economy to address food security. Agricultural sector
is the only sector that is capable to eliminate hunger and poverty. It is not
too late for us to take action. What the government doing is helpful. It only
needs more attention to invest in providing farmers knowledge in
technological farming.
