Adarsh Activity 1.1.1 _Fling that Thing

The document outlines a team-based instant challenge requiring the application of a design process using specified materials to create a launcher. It includes steps for documenting the design process, creating a box plot to represent launch data, and delivering specific items in a digital engineering notebook. Additionally, it prompts reflections on optimizing the design and the characteristics necessary for effective teamwork in problem-solving.

Here is your first opportunity to practice creative thinking and a design process. You will
work as part of a team to complete a short problem-solving task called an instant
challenge and requires you to apply a design process. Use the following checklist to
help you complete each step.

Read through the DESIGN PROCESS resource to recall the steps of the design
process.
As a team read through all of the challenge directions before you begin your
work.
Familiarize yourself with the available materials.
Document the whole process (drawing, ideas, sketches, decision matrix, pictures
of the finished launcher) in your Engineering notebook on a page labeled design
process.

+7min. To record 12 shots(not 10)

Complete the Instant Challenge with your team.

Represent Your Data

A box plot, or a box-and-whisker plot, is a graphical model of data for a single variable.
Box plots allow you to quickly get an idea of the center and variability of a set of data.

Create a box plot to represent your data from the 12 launches. (we will do this
step as a class)
Using your box plot and data set, predict the distance of the next launch. Justify
your prediction and provide evidence using experimental data.
Deliverables
In your digital engineering notebook include the following:
Title Slide for the Activity “Fling that Thing”
Brainstorm sketch of each launcher
Decision Matrix used to design launcher
A photo of your completed launcher
Raw data from your launches
Box-and-whisker plots of the data: One hand drawn graph

Conclusions
1. If you had an opportunity to optimize your design, how would you increase the
distance the Starburst traveled?

I would hot glue the stick more into the base to make it more secure.

2. What characteristics of a team are necessary to successfully design solutions to

difficult problems?
Use other people's ideas and choose which is the most efficient and
successful.
