Statement of Purpose – Margaret Esi Quansah
Business brings continents together; it is the common ground for people
worldwide to interact and exchange culture and holds economies and their strength of authority. I was inspired to pursue a career in business administration from a young age, witnessing my mother's business activities. She is a trader in local commodities and is a very business- oriented person. My keen interest in my mum’s business meant I spent much time with her at her shop during school breaks and public holidays. It was not a surprise when I started my first ‘business’ in junior high school by taking pencils, pens, and cookies on credit from my mum and selling them to my schoolmates for a little profit. I grew confident in making judgments and appreciated how good decisions are for businesses.
This experience coupled with my interest in interacting and understanding
figures, their interpretation, meaning and implication to a business informed my decision to pursue Business as a course at Senior High School. I continued to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Ghana. My performance in financial reporting, entrepreneurship development, business statistics, business ethics and quantitative methods put me in a good position to apply for a graduate program.
Since January 2022 I have been an administrative officer at the Western
Regional Coordinating Council, Sekondi, Ghana. I work closely with the senior administrative officer monitoring day-to-day business operations, interacting with external partners, improving business and employee performance, negotiating contracts, and analysing financial data. Before this appointment, I completed my mandatory National Service at the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) local office in Agona, Ghana. My core duties were registering clients for health insurance policies, replacing NHIS cards, and sensitising the public to the importance of NHIS policy. I also had several vacation internships with three companies: Takoradi Flour Mills, Ghana Revenue Authority and Metropolitan Life Insurance. During my internships, I gained experience working as a financial analyst, selling policies to customers, and using various financial software to investigate enquiries and queries from suppliers, customers, clients or staff. I also helped with advice as required.
Over the years, I have been able to build the foundation of my
communication, leadership, and planning skills, and I am very eager to hone those skills even further. Getting a Master's in Business Administration (MBA) at this stage in my career is crucial not only for career development, job security and improved salary but also for the opportunity to be in a globalised business environment which will give me the perspective and contacts from professionals and peers which are invaluable. The Ghanaian government's launching of ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ and ‘The Year of Return’ initiatives has seen an increase in foreign investment. The Ghanaian economy is gradually evolving into a sophisticated one, employers, companies and industries are seeking the services of trustworthy employees with advanced knowledge in business. Therefore, acquiring an MBA at the University of Saskatchewan will open doors, especially within the Ghanaian community. I strongly believe that an international, multidisciplinary, hands-on, and individual programme like an MBA at the University of Saskatchewan will help me understand the intricacies of global markets and how their innovation and production impact the impending globalisation process of the Ghanaian economy. I aim to start my business consultancy firm soon, where I can carefully analyse financial trends, offer advice, information, insights, and recommendations to assist clients in achieving their objectives and train the next generation of business enthusiasts. A master’s degree at your institution will give me in- depth knowledge of the business world and the needed transferable soft and hard skills like collaboration, emotional intelligence, creativity, SEO/SEM marketing, analytical reasoning and many more.
Over the years, I have been able to build the foundation of my
communication, leadership, and planning skills, and I am very eager to hone those skills even further. My life, work experiences and commitment to being the best at whatever I do would be a valuable addition to the graduate program. The University of Saskatchewan is a premier institution for many aspiring postgraduate applicants and a very competitive program. I am highly motivated to rise above the demand, and competition and explore challenges to excel in my graduate studies. I believe that graduate study at your institution is the surest step in attaining my academic and career aspirations.
