Base-Plate

This document outlines the design procedures for column base plates in structural and civil engineering, referencing the AISC Manual of Steel Construction. It details standard base plates, anchor bolt specifications, welding requirements, and shear considerations, emphasizing the need for engineering modifications based on specific project requirements. Additionally, it provides guidelines for selecting appropriate base plate sizes and configurations, as well as considerations for shear load transfer and potential interferences with vertical braces.

Design Manual - Section: 3.5 Chris Kitchen
Column Base Plate Design GDLT Approved

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 This procedure is based on AISC Manual of Steel

Construction Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), 3rd
Edition.

2.0 STANDARD BASE PLATES

2.1 Standard pre-engineered base plates are available for

reference and use on all projects and are detailed on Standard
Drawing Section 2.1 "Base Plate Details"

2.2 Standard base plates are intended to be used directly if

possible, with the understanding that modification to meet specific
project requirements may be needed. If the design condition or
design code for the base plate are different from the assumptions
described in Paragraph 1.3, the base plate must be engineered.

2.3 For each standard base plate there is a recommended

column, anchor bolt and pier size indicated on the drawing.

2.4 Base Plates type 1, 2, 3, and 4 are pinned connections.

2.4.1 The allowable loads are noted on the drawing.

2.4.2 The loads are unfactored based on 345 MPa

(50 ksi) steel, LRFD design, A307, "LS", anchor bolts,
with the recommended pier and 0.5% pier reinforcing.

2.4.3 The loads have conservatively been assumed

as dead for compression and wind or earthquake for
tension and shear which provides for the largest load
factor.

2.4.4 The allowable tension and shear loads are

governed by the bolts and include additional capacity
contributed by the reinforcement in the pier.
2.4.5 Allowable compression loads are governed by
the lesser of the bearing on the recommended pier or
the plate bending.

2.4.6 Allowable shear and tension are based on

combined interaction with the shear load maximized.
Reference Design Manual Section 2.2.7 “Capacity
Calculations”.

2.4.7 For other design conditions the base plate

shall be engineered.

2.5 Base plate type 5 is moment connection and must be

engineered.

2.6 In house computer program for both pinned or moment

resisting base plates are available if a base plate needs to be
engineered.

2.7 The appropriate base plate can be selected from the

standard drawing and noted on the structural steel elevation
drawing (such as BP3A) if standard base plates are adopted for
project use.

2.8 For base plates not detailed on the standard drawing, a

custom detail shall be drawn utilizing the Generic Details.

3.0 ANCHOR BOLTS

3.1 Anchor bolts sizes shall be selected in 6 mm (¼")

increments.

3.2 For anchor bolt hole sizing reference Civil Drafting Manual
Section 1.4 "Steel Drawing Presentation".

3.3 Square anchor bolt patterns are preferred.

3.4 For clearance from the centerline of an A307 anchor bolts to

nearest obstruction (fillet weld) reference Design Manual Section
2.2.5 "Anchor bolt wrench clearances".

3.5 Tightening of anchor bolts is not required for A307 bolts.

Anchor bolts are hand tightened to "snug".

3.6 Wrench clearances for pretentioned high strength bolts shall

be based on the specific tightening device.
4.0 BASE PLATES
4.1 Base plate thickness' shall be selected in 6 mm (¼")
increments.

4.2 Base plate widths shall be selected with one of two

dimensions in even 50 mm (2") increments allowing the use of
standard width plate stock.

4.3 Minimum edge distances from the center of the anchor bolt
hole to the edge of the plate shall be based on a sheared edge and
the over sized hole.

4.4 If the required base plate thickness exceeds 50 mm (2"),

consideration should be given to the use of baseplate stiffeners.

5.0 WELDS
5.1 For minimum sizes based on base plate and/or column
flange/web thicknesses reference AISC Manual.

5.2 The preferred fillet weld size is no larger than 8 mm (5/16")

since this size weld can be deposited in one pass with the shielded
metal arc welding process in the horizontal and flat positions.

6.0 SHEAR CONSIDERATION

6.1 Friction between the column base plate and pier shall be
utilized to transfer shear loads, provided an adequate compressive
load exists in all load cases. In the absence of Project
Specifications, a 0.55 coefficient of friction may be used. Reference
Design Manual Section 2.2.7 "Capacity Calculations".

6.2 For large shear loads on the column to foundation

connections, large diameter anchor bolts or high strength anchor
bolts should be used.

6.3 Where the required size of anchor bolt exceeds 50 mm (2")

diameter, a shear lug (pipe sleeve) should be considered to transfer
the shear to the foundation.

7.0 MISCELLANEOUS
7.1 Vertical brace location shall be check for interference with
anchor bolts. In the event that interference is discovered the
working point shall be raised, usually 200 mm (8") to 300 mm (12"),
above bottom of plate.
7.2 Grout holes shall be specified on extremely large plates
and/or where shear keys are used.
