Objectives:  To introduce the concepts of neural networks and


advanced neural networks
 To understand the fundamentals of fuzzy sets and fuzzy
logic
 To establish basic knowledge about optimization
techniques in soft computing

Expected Outcome: At the end of course student should be able to


 Design soft computing techniques for various
applications domains
 Lead project teams in the design of soft computing
related projects

Module No. 1 Neural Networks 8 Hours


History, Mathematical model of neuron, ANN architectures, Learning rules, Learning
Paradigms. Perceptron network, Backpropagation network, Backpropagation learning and its
applications, Variants of BPA.
Module No. 2 Advanced Neural Networks 9 Hours
Associative Memory: Auto correlation, Hetero Correlation, Exponential BAM, Applications.
Adaptive Resonance Theory: Vector Quantization, ART1, ART2, applications, Kohonen’s
Self Organizing Map.
Module No. 3 Fuzzy Sets And Relations 8 Hours
Uncertainty and Imprecision, Chance vs ambiguity, Fuzzy Sets, Fuzzy Relations,
Membership functions, Properties of Membership functions, Fuzzification and
Defuzzification.
Module No. 4 Fuzzy Logic 7 Hours
Classical Logic and Fuzzy logic, Fuzzy Rule based systems, Fuzzy Decision making, Fuzzy
Classification.
Module No 5 Genetic Algorithms 7 Hours
Introduction to Evolutionary Computation: Biological and artificial evolution, evolutionary
computation, a simple genetic algorithm. Search Operators: Crossover, mutation, crossover
and mutation rates, Selection Schemes: Fitness proportional selection and fitness scaling,
ranking, tournament selection, selection pressure and its impact on evolutionary search.
Module No 6 Optimization And Decision 6 Hours
Support Techniques
Swarm Intelligence Introduction--Ant Colony Optimization-Particle Swarm Optimization-
Applications, scatter search and other search techniques, simulated annealing
