Purpose of the Course


The purpose of this course is to expose students to a detailed study of the endocentric and
exocentric units of English.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Define a phrase
2. Classify phrases
3. Describe the internal structure of a given phrase
4. Explain the syntactic functions of the various types of phrases
Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should:
1. Possess the requisite linguistic knowledge to enable them do a syntactic analysis of
any sentence.
2. Have adequate competence to construct ‘well-formed’ sentences and edit ‘ill-formed’
ones.

 The structure of an adverbial phrase
 Types of adverbials: adjuncts, disjuncts, and conjuncts
