2. Understanding CBE

Competency-Based Education (CBE) emphasizes mastery of skills over time spent learning, allowing for personalized learning pathways tailored to individual student needs. Unlike traditional education, CBE incorporates diverse learning experiences, collaborative planning, and ongoing assessments to support student progress. The ultimate goal of CBE is to foster all-round development in learners, preparing them for the challenges of the 21st century.

UNDERSTANDING

COMPETENCY-BASED
EDUCATION (CBE)
WHAT DOES COMPETENCY
BASED-EDUCATION LOOK LIKE?

The process of Competency-Based Education focuses is on what

students learn and not on the amount of time taken to learn. Moving to
the next level is not determined by time or age but by the mastery of
the competency. Learning is designed across age and class-
appropriate skills and competency development. The competencies are
well defined and fixed, as learning outcomes, to ensure that each child
acquires the required learning, but the time spent and pathways of
learning are different for each child.

The students, teachers and parents know what the competencies or

expectations of learning are through a set of Learning Outcomes. This
helps teachers and students to plan what they need to teach and learn
as well as track students’ progress. When students experience any
difficulty, the teachers and students address that challenge.
HOW IS COMPETENCY BASED EDUCATION DIFFERENT?
Traditional Education

Learning happens largely inside a traditional

classroom.
The instructional programme is based on a fixed
curriculum with little to no accommodation of student
interests or learning styles.
-The teacher designs and delivers instructional
program with very little differentiation as per the
students’ context and socio-economic status.
Assessments are done at set times to evaluate and
classify students through one-time term-end
examinations (summative assessment).
Students mostly have to learn at the educator’s pace,
regardless of mastery or requirement of additional
time.

Competency Based Education

Children have a variety of learning experiences that could be at

the school, at home and in the community through life
experiences.
The teachers work collaboratively with community partners
and students to develop a unique learning plan for each
student, based on interests, learning styles and real-time data.
A comprehensive assessment system is an essential part of the
CBE. Daily instructions are guided by formative and summative
assessments, have flexible pathways, differentiated support
and multiple means to demonstrate skill development.
In CBE, students are expected to master competencies aligned
to standards, (Learning Outcomes) with clear, transferable
learning outcomes.
KEY FEATURES OF CBE

INSTRUCTION IS DESIGNED TO MATCH THE DEVELOPMENTAL READINESS OF THE

1 STUDENTS
Students are given instruction at their personal level of readiness for
as long as necessary to achieve complete competency.

PEDAGOGY BASED ON ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES THAT HELP CONNECT

2 LEARNING TO REAL LIFE SITUATIONS
The pedagogy is based on activities, experiences, integration of
arts/sports/technology, etc. and connecting the learning to real-life
situations, so that the children learn to apply knowledge in real-life
contexts.

STUDENTS RECIEVE DIFFERENTIATED SUPPORT BASED ON THEIR INDIVIDUAL

3 LEARNING NEEDS
Students are taught and supported based on their personal strengths
and weaknesses, giving each individual student the same chance for
success. Students construct their own knowledge by actively
participating, applying critical-thinking and problem-solving skills along
with good communication skills, collaboration and cultural
responsiveness to help them work in ever-changing, diverse
environments.

FOCUS ON FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT, SO THAT ADJUSTMENT MAY BE DONE IN

4 REAL TIME
Formative assessment is used as a guiding tool, which is meaningful
that provide positive learning experiences for children. Formative
assessments are emphasized so that teachers get to understand where
students are facing difficulties, having misconceptions so that these
learning difficulties are addressed by working closely with the students
including giving them feedback about their performance and where
they need to improve.

ASSESSMENT IN MULTIPLE CONTEXTS

5 Skills or concepts are assessed in multiple contexts to ensure that both
deep understanding and application is acquired by the learners.
Criterion referenced testing to ensure assessment of predefined
achievement of Learning Outcomes.

PROGRESS BASED ON MASTERY OF CONCEPTS

6 Explicit and measurable learning outcomes are defined which are the
pathways for competency acquisition. When students demonstrate a
clear understanding of the topic, prove their ability to apply that
understanding, and show how they have developed important skills,
they move forward. Certification of level of learning is based on
demonstrated achievement of LOs
The aim of CBE is to
focus on the
all-round
development of
learners so as to
prepare them for the
demands of the
21st Century.
