System Overview
1. Introduction This section describes the Eclipse Series EPC-15 pattern control and
includes:
S Product Description
S System Components
S System Capabilities
S Operator Panel Overview
NOTE: The glossary at the end of this manual will define technical
terms.
2. Product Description The EPC-15 pattern control is designed for constant line speeds and has
an accuracy of 1 ms (1 mm at 60 m/min or 0.1 in. at 500 ft/min). It can
receive input from up to three triggers, control four independent outputs,
produce up to eight beads per output, and store as many as 25
programs. In addition, the EPC-15 pattern control can handle normal,
random-length, and stitched bead patterns, automatically determine line
speed, and accept entered values in time or distance.
5742129A
3. System Components A typical EPC-15 pattern control system includes the following
components:
S one main control unit
S one, two, or three triggers
S one external power supply
S guns and solenoid valves for up to four outputs

Trigger
A trigger, or photosensor, detects products as they move along the
production line, and provides input to the EPC-15 pattern control. Three
triggers can be equipped for complex patterns or dual-gluing applications.
Nordson offers the following types of triggers:
S a retroreflective photosensor
S a retroreflective photosensor with polarized lens
S a diffuse-reflective photosensor
S through-beam emitter/receiver photosensor
The type of trigger to be used depends on the reflectivity of the product
being sensed and the lighting conditions within the sensing area.
Power Supply
The EPC-15 pattern control requires an external power supply to convert
from AC to DC power. Nordson offers two different power supplies:
S a 2.5 A power supply in an IP54 sealed enclosure
S a 2.5 A power supply in an unsealed enclosure
Both are autoranging units that can accept power from 90 to 135 VAC or
from 175 to 264 VAC and convert it to a regulated 24 VDC.
The power supply must be sized to handle the total load of all guns plus
the load of the EPC-15 pattern control. For information on selecting a
power supply for your system, refer to System Design in Installation.
Gun
The EPC-15 pattern control operates one or more adhesive-dispensing
guns, up to four guns total. Use either pneumatic solenoid valves or
electric gun drivers, depending on the type of guns used.
4. System Capabilities The EPC-15 pattern control incorporates some advanced features and
new technology that include:
S Setup Capabilities
S Operational Capabilities
S Application Capabilities
Autoscaling
The EPC-15 pattern control’s autoscaling feature determines the line
speed based on a product’s length. The pattern can then be entered in
terms of distance instead of time. This saves setup time by avoiding a
manual computation of line speed.
The following figure shows a typical bead (bead 2 from gun 1) and the
measurements required to define it.
S bead offset 120 mm (4.7 in.)
S bead length 30 mm (1.2 in.)

Operational Capabilities The EPC-15 pattern control simplifies system operation by providing
access to real-time data about system variables for on-the-spot
adjustments to patterns or bead volume when needed. The different
operational capabilities of the system are described below.
Remote Inputs
The EPC-15 pattern control can control the system remotely with three
inputs. These inputs can be connected to a switch box or a PLC. The
inputs can either be configured as a remote recall so that programs 1−7
can be run, or they can be used to enable, disable, and lock the system.
Application Capabilities The EPC-15 pattern control can handle a variety of applications to meet
different production requirements. The following table explains the most
significant of these features.
5. Operator Panel Overview The operator panel has two major parts:
S Display
S Keypad
5742186A
Display The display provides information required to set up, operate, and monitor
the EPC-15 pattern control. Various words, abbreviations, and icons are
used to explain the information. For example, on the PATTERN screen,
information such as the status of the pattern generation, the number of
the active program, and the number of the selected gun are available.

Unit (contd) low-profile (7.5-mm depth) DIN rail provided in the ship-with kit or
provide a high-profile (15-mm depth) DIN rail.
NOTE: When using a high-profile DIN rail, use the large rubber
standoffs supplied in the ship-with kit to mount the unit so that it is
perfectly leveled on the DIN rail. Remove the two small standoffs and
replace them with the larger standoffs.
5742144A
3. Hook the top of the two mounting clips on the back of the unit over
the top of the DIN rail.
5. Push the unit against the DIN rail to secure the mounting clips.
Objective Recommendation or
Requirement
Protect trigger from water and dust Choose a suitable place for the
IP54 enclosure (which is splash
and dust resistant).
Ensure good product sensing Make sure the distance between
the trigger lens and the target is
NOTE: The sensor should be within recommended range:
placed 2 in. from product. This
prevents outside sources from S Diffuse reflective (proximity)
type: 51−381 mm (2−15 in.)
triggering the sensor (false
triggering). S Retroreflective type (polarized
lens): 51−2130 mm (2−84 in.)
S Retroreflective type
(non-polarized lens):
51−4500 mm (2−180 in.)
Avoid exceeding the controller Choose a location that will not
queuing capability permit more than four products
between the trigger and guns at
any time.
Ensure proper operation of pattern Make sure the time between the
control trigger and the first bead of each
gun is greater than 2
milliseconds plus the time for
gun to fire adhesive.
NOTE: For random-length
operation, the trigger must be
farther from the gun than the
longest pattern length (i.e.,
the distance from trigger to
gun is greater than the
distance from the start of the
box to the end of the last
bead).
Maximize accuracy With pattern control operation in
mind, install the trigger as close
to the guns as possible to
minimize the effects of line
speed variance. Farther
mounting distance of the trigger
requires more stable line
speeds.
Mounting a Trigger (contd) 2. Mount the trigger on either the adjustable mounting bracket or the
mounting nut provided with the trigger. Mounting patterns for the
bracket and the hole size required to use the mounting nut are shown
below.

program activation.
Trigger Polarity
Set the correct polarity for each trigger independently. Refer to the
Installation section to determine trigger polarity. Use the MONITOR
option on the EPC-15 pattern control to verify that the trigger polarity is
set correctly.
GTOs
The gun to trigger offsets establishes the distance between each gun and
the trigger to which it is assigned. This can be measured using a
measuring tape or other tool.
If time units are used, convert the measured distance to time using the
speed of the production line.
TIME = DISTANCE
LINE SPD
NOTE: If using GTO, set the unit to metric or English. If not, all bead
offsets have to include the travel time between the trigger and the gun.
NOTE: GTO must be accurate for random length pattern types. GTO
may be left at 0 for normal and stitch pattern types.
Gun-Trigger Assignments
Assign a trigger to each gun.
NOTE: Each gun may be assigned to only one trigger, but each trigger
can be assigned to multiple guns.

To Delete a Pattern
Use this procedure to delete one or more patterns from a pattern set.
Deleting a pattern will remove all the beads in the pattern.
2. Use the navigation keys to select the number of the gun that is used
to produce the pattern to be deleted.
4. Press the DELETE key. The word Delete briefly appears on the
display, all beads generated by the gun are deleted, and the icon
disappears. If desired, define new beads at this time.
5. To delete additional patterns from the pattern set, repeat steps 2−4.
Program Options This part of the section describes how to set up the following program
options:
S Pattern Types
S Trigger Minimum
S Speed
S Autoscaling
NOTE: If the interval is too small in stitch bead mode, the gun may not
react fast enough to stitch. If the interval is large relative to the size of
the beads, then there may only be one sub bead produced.
Pattern Types
Set the type of pattern generation to use. Select between normal,
random-length and stitched bead patterns.
S Normal – places the pattern from the leading edge of the product
only.
S Random length – places the pattern from the leading edge and as a
mirror image on the trailing edge.
NORMAL
Offset − X (up to 8 beads)
Offset − 2
GTO Offset − 1
NORMAL
STITCHED BEAD
Offset − X (up to 8 beads)

RANDOM
LENGTH
Control the amount of adhesive used by entering the gun savings and
gun interval savings explained in the table on page 4-19. If the resulting
pattern does not have sufficient bond strength, a quick adjustment to the
percentage savings can be made. Adjust the percentage to the
maximum possible adhesive savings without loss of bond strength.
Trigger Minimum
Set the minimum allowable distance (generally the product length)
between trigger events for trigger 1 and (if used) triggers 2 and 3. This
feature is used to ignore unwanted triggers from the product.
This feature is not needed unless the product has gaps in it, resulting in
multiple triggers per box.
Speed
Set the speed of the production line. If speed is known, enter it directly.
Otherwise, use the autoscaling procedure.
Autoscaling
Automatically determine the line speed, given a known product length.
Provide to the EPC-15 pattern control the length of the pattern that
passes under trigger 1, and the system will compute the required speed.
Refer to the following figure for an example of using this procedure.

5. Remote Operation The EPC-15 can control the unit remotely with three inputs. These inputs
can be connected to a switch box or a PLC. They can either be
configured as a remote recall, so that programs 1−7 can be run, or they
can be used to enable, disable, and lock the system.
NOTE: Depending upon to which input mode the unit is set (Off, Recall,
Enable) refer to that part of this procedure. If unsure, refer to the
following procedure.
Determining Remote Input The EPC-15 pattern control’s input mode settings are:
Mode S Off − remote inputs not used
S Recall − remote recall of programs
S Enable − enable, disable, lockout
1. With the SHIFT key pressed, select the SYSTEM key.
Remote Input Set to Off If the input mode is set to Off, the remote inputs are ignored (not used),
and this section can be skipped.
Recall (Remote Recall) Remote recall uses the three remote inputs to either:
Remote Operation S disable the system
S run programs 1−7
In the recall mode, the USE key is disabled. Only the remote inputs can
change programs. Programs (patterns and settings) can still be modified
and saved to the active program. Refer to the following table for

Section 7
Parts
1. Introduction To order parts, call the Nordson Customer Service Center or a local
Nordson representative. Use this five-column parts list, and the
accompanying illustration, to describe and locate parts correctly.
Using the Illustrated Parts Numbers in the Item column correspond to numbers that identify parts in
List illustrations following each parts list. The code NS (not shown) indicates
that a listed part is not illustrated. A dash (—) is used when the part
number applies to all parts in the illustration.
The six-digit number in the Part column is the Nordson Corporation part
number. A series of dashes in this column (- - - - - -) means the part
cannot be ordered separately.
The Description column gives the part name, as well as its dimensions
and other characteristics when appropriate. Indentions show the
relationships between assemblies, subassemblies, and parts.
The number in the Quantity column is the quantity required per unit,
assembly, or subassembly. The code AR (As Required) is used if the
part number is a bulk item ordered in quantities or if the quantity per
assembly depends on the product version or model.
Letters in the Note column refer to notes at the end of each parts list.
Notes contain important information about usage and ordering. Special
attention should be given to notes.
2. Recommended Tools To service the EPC-15 pattern control, assemble the following tools:
S a number 0 flat-head screwdriver (shipped with the EPC-15 pattern
control)

Nordson Glossary
Use this glossary for explanations of the technical and specialized terms
found in this manual.
Autoscaling A feature of the EPC-15 pattern control that determines the line speed
given a known product length.
Auto Start An optional setting that automatically places the EPC-15 in Run mode
when power is applied, and begins generating patterns when the first
product sensed by the trigger reaches the guns. If the auto start setting
is not activated, manually press the RUN key to start the generation of
pattern sets.
Bead Offset The distance from the leading edge of the product to the beginning of the
bead. Refer also to Leading Edge.
Disable Status Pattern generation is disabled by the remote inputs. When remote inputs
enable the system, the status will become RUN.
Display The area on the operator panel that shows information for setting up,
operating, and monitoring the EPC-15.
Fault Notification that a defect or problem has occurred in the EPC-15. When
a fault occurs, the word Fault and a fault code appear on the display. If
the system is running, the EPC-15 will stop generating patterns. Faults
cannot be cleared until the cause of the fault is corrected.
GTO Gun-To-Trigger offset. The distance from the centerline of the gun nozzle
to the centerline of the trigger lens. The GTO for random length
programs must be manually entered.
Gun The device that dispenses adhesive onto products. Also called a head or
an applicator, a gun can have a single dispensing module or it can have
multiple modules. Refer also to Gun Actuator and Output.
Gun Actuator The devise that opens and closes the gun. A gun actuator can be a
pneumatic solenoid valve or an electric gun driver, depending on the type
of guns used in the production facility.
Interval The distance from the start of one bead to the start of the next bead or, in
the case of stitched beads, the distance from the start of one sub-bead to
the start of the next sub-bead.
Leading Edge The edge or face of the product that the trigger senses first on the
production line. This edge is also used as the starting point for the
bead-offset measurement. Refer also to Trailing Edge and Bead Offset.
Main Control Unit The EPC-15 pattern control, which includes the main engine board, an
integral operator panel, and the enclosure.
Multiple Pattern Processing The ability of the EPC-15 to remember up to four new products while
gluing another.
Normal Pattern Type A pattern type generated by the EPC-15. The beads are placed off of the
leading edge of the product only.
Online Pattern Adjustment A feature that provides quick adjustments to a pattern set as products run
on the production line. The feature also provides faster set ups for
patterns and corrects, on the spot, irregular patterns caused by machine
or product variations.
Operator Panel The primary method of user interaction, including the display and keypad.
Output A current or voltage sent from the EPC-15 pattern control that operates a
gun actuator. The EPC-15 pattern control has four independent outputs
for operating gun actuators.
Pattern All the beads produced by a single gun. Enter settings for up to 8 beads
per pattern. Refer also to Pattern Set.
Pattern Set All the patterns generated by a single program. Because the EPC-15
pattern control has four outputs for controlling gun operation, up to four
different patterns on any product can be generated.
Pattern Type The EPC-15 can place three types of patterns: normal, random-length,
and stitched bead. Refer to Normal Pattern Type, Random-Length
Pattern Type, and Stitched Bead Pattern Type.
Power Supply Equipment that converts a plant’s AC line voltage to DC voltage and
supplies it to the EPC-15 pattern control. The power supply is external to
the EPC-15 pattern control and is connected to it by wiring.
Program All of the pattern settings and parameters for applying adhesive during a
single production run. Each program is identified by a program number
and stored in the controller memory. A program includes all settings in
both the Pattern mode and the Options mode (pattern type, trig min,
speed).
Program settings vary from one product to the next. However, system
settings are global and do not change from product to product.
Purge The process of removing trapped air or debris from the melter or of
relieving system pressure by turning the gun(s) on. One or more guns
can be purged by pressing the PURGE key and the ENTER key on the
operator panel of the EPC-15 pattern control.
Quick Keys DELETE, COPY, and PASTE keys. By pressing the SHIFT key and one
of these keys, use different shortcuts when entering or revising pattern
settings. The DELETE key is also used to clear trigger counts and
values.
Random Length Pattern Type A pattern type generated by the EPC-15 pattern control. Random-length
places the pattern on the leading edge and a mirror image on the trailing
edge of the product.
Remote Inputs The three inputs that may be used for remote program recall, or as
enable, disable, and lockout.
RUN Status The operating mode used to start pattern generation. Place the controller
in the RUN mode by manually pressing the RUN key or by applying
power to the unit when the auto start feature is enabled.
Speed The speed of the production line. In metric or English units, it converts
the distance values entered into time values that produce the pattern.
Stitched Bead Pattern Type A pattern type generated by the EPC-15 pattern control. The stitching
feature reduces adhesive use by a percentage entered by the user. The
pattern control then determines the correct length and spacing of the
sub-beads in the bead pattern. Also available is the option of setting a
sub-bead interval (the distance from the start of one sub-bead to the
next). Refer also to Sub-Bead.
Sub-Bead A bead that results when the pattern control divides a continuous bead
into smaller, spaced beads. Sub-beads are used in the generation of
stitched beads.
Stop Status The operating mode used to stop pattern generation. Place the controller
in the STOP mode by manually pressing the RUN key.
System Settings All settings in the system mode. These are global to the unit and
therefore affect all programs.
Trailing Edge The product edge that causes the trigger to stop sensing the product as it
