1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this method statement/ work instructions is to ensure that all the
installation of sprinkler system and standpipe works and its related activities are
executed in accordance with the contract requirements and implemented with the
highest level of conformance in Quality, Health, safety and environmental aspects

2.0 SCOPE
The scope of works covers all installation works / activities on firefighting to ensure that all the
define procedure for the installation is in accordance with the requirements specified extension of
Proposed (G+M+4Parking+15) Commercial & Residential Building Project standard specification
and drawings.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1Project/ Department Manager
has the over- all responsibility for the installation of fire protection
system works, implementation of HSE procedure and is further
responsible for providing adequate resources for the effective
implementation of the work Quality and HSE aspects performed
under his projects in accordance with the contract/ Project
requirements.

5.2 Project Engineers


Along with the supervisors/ team leaders will ensure that the
installation work activities are executed/ carried out in accordance with
the contract and client requirements along with the effective
implementation of the HSE procedures such as conducting tool box
meeting (in the absence of HSE Engineer)

5.3 Project Supervisors


Shall coordinate with project engineers and if required to the client for
the proper execution of installation work within and in accordance with
the contract requirements as well as the HSE procedures/ policy.

5.4 HSE Engineer / Site Safety officer / Safety inspector


Is responsible for periodic monitoring and reporting of all
environmental, safety and health aspects as well conducting HSE
trainings, toolbox meetings and advice precautionary measures which
are related to the nature of works being executed. Shall also conduct
unscheduled inspection to monitor HSE compliance and its
effectiveness

6.0 PROCEDURE
6.1 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

6.1.1 GENERAL

• Make available at site, an approved copy of shop drawing for the


intended installation.
• Ensure that all materials delivered to site are according to the
approved material submittal & shop drawings.
• Examine the materials delivered to the work place, and ensure that
the materials and are free from damage. Any damaged or defective
materials found will be set aside.
• Physically and dimensionally check and ensure the proposed pipe
routing is feasible and not clashing with any other services.
• Ensure that the pipe routing is feasible in terms of pipe supports.
That is, there should be solid building structures available to support the
pipes.

6.1.2 PREPARATION AND INSTALLATION.

• Thoroughly clean the pipe surfaces with damp cloth and let dry the
surface. In case, if any foreign material remain on the surface, which
cannot be cleaned by damp cloth, then use a mild wire brush to remove
the same.
• If pipe surface is contaminated with oily material, then use a wash
solvent.
• Prepare a fresh mix of primer with adequate quantity of solvent
thinner. Mix thoroughly to achieve a paste consistency.
• First coat of primer will be applied using Brush/ Roller
• Keep the painted pipe in safe place for a period as recommended by
the manufacturer so as to get the paint dry thoroughly.

• Based on the approved shop drawings, square cut pipes with a pipe
cutter - machine mounted or manual, to the exact length, as required.
• Second touch up primer coat will be applied after the pipe hanging &
Final paint coat will be applied after installation completion.
• Use strong and purpose-built roller pipe stands whenever carrying
out operations like threading, pipe cutting or roll grooving. These
Supports stands should be so positioned in such a way that the whole
weight of the pipe is directly taken by the stands, and not otherwise.
• For pipes of sizes, 2" and below, thread the pipe ends using the
standard threading machine having BSPT dies.
• Thread length should not exceed in such a way that, a maximum of
one and a half threads exposed when the joint is finally pulled in place.
• For joining the threaded pipes and fittings, use jute & shellac. For
equipment connections which may require replacement or renewal,
Teflon threads sealing tapes to be used.
• For grooved joints, roll cut the groove to a depth as given in the
fittings manufacturer's data sheets. Additionally, check the groove depth
physically by inserting a grooved coupling half into the groove and ensure
the fitting snugly and smoothly go around.
• Liberally apply gasket lubricant around the groove and on the gasket
internal. Use fittings manufacturer's supplied / recommended material
only for this for this purpose.
• Marking the routes of the pipe work will follow the approved shop
drawings and site co-ordination with other services based on given and
final benchmarks. In case of onsite co-ordination, changes will be reflected
on the as built drawings.
• After marking the pipe routes, the anchoring points will be drilled
according to the support spacing as shown on the approved shop
drawings

• The approved type of pipe support / clamp will be attached to the


threaded rods. Nuts and washers will be installed as well.
• Ml0 Anchors will be used to support 4" and below pipes while M12
Anchors will be used to support 6" pipes and above as recommended by
the manufacturer.
• Lift the pipe to the installation level and support it temporarily by
reliable means.
• Insert the pipe hanger around the pipe and lock in place by inserting
the knurled nut.
• Screw in the hanger insert nut to the thread rod and bring into the
required level.

6.1.3 INSTALLATION OF SPRINKLERS AND ACCESSORIES

• After the completion of first fix install the drops to the center of tiles
as per the approved reflected ceiling plan (applicable for false ceiling
areas).
• Install the sprinkler head using the wrench provided by the
manufacturer

• Apply the Teflon threads sealing tape only to the male portion of the
sprinkler
• Install upright sprinklers in such away that the arms are parallel to
the branch pipe.
• Maintain a clearance of minimum 1" between the deflector of upright
sprinkler and ceiling.
• Ensure that sprinkler heads have the correct finish and temperature
rating.
• Fix the sprinkler Zone Control Valve as per the approved shop
drawing. Ensure that valves are located at an accessible location.
• Ensure that the arrow of the water flow detector points to the
direction of the water flow.
• Ensure that butterfly valves are provided with internal monitor
switch.
• Ensure that the sight glass of the test/ drain valve is free of damage
• Ensure that test / drain valves are provided as shown on the
drawings.

6.1.4 :- Installation of Cabinets, Landing valves and Fire Extinguishers

• The location of the cabinets will be examined and ensure that


opening is sufficient for fixing the all equipment and the mounting height
of the Landing valve and Fire Hose is as per the drawings and to the
requirements of Civil defense.
• The cabinet (without the equipment) will be installed firstly, and the
branches to the hose valve will be fabricated and installed on site to
ensure actual entry point to the cabinet.
• Fix the Landing valve as per the manufacturer's instructions at the
correct mounting height.
• Keep Fire Extinguisher inside the cabinet along with the Fire Hose.
• Install the breeching inlet & ensure that mounting height is as per
the drawings and the requirements of Civil defense.
• Ensure that no shut off valve is installed in the piping to the
breaching inlet.
• Ensure that no shut off valve is installed in the piping to the
breaching inlet.
• Ensure that the breeching inlet is located at conspicuous location.

6.2 TESTING PROCEDURE

intended testing and commissioning.
• Ensure that all materials delivered to site are according to the
approved material submittal & shop drawings.
• Examine the materials delivered to the work place, and ensure that
the materials and are free from damage. Any damaged or defective

6.2.2 PRE COMMISSIONING, TESTING & COMMISSIONING:

Hydraulic pressure testing procedure:


Pre-testing:-
• Make available a highlighted drawing of area intended for hydro-
static pressure testing.
• Indicate on the drawing the location of vent / drain valve, plugged
connections and water pressure pump connection.
• Make sure the test witness timing and durations are agreed by the
Consultant
• Ensure that, an approved method statement of hydraulic pressure
testing is readily available at the location of testing until the test approval
sheet is signed off.
• Place safety warnings at all points where personnel may pass
through within the vicinity of testing.

6.1.1 HYDROSTATIC TESTING OF PIPE WORK

• Make sure that no equipment item, such as sprinklers, valves, etc. are
subjected to the pressure test.
• Physically check and ensure that all pipes undergoing test is strongly
supported and addition of pipe work will not introduce undue stress on
any support.
• Make sure that, all open pipe works are suitably plugged.
• Attach the pressure pump to the desired location through an
isolation valve, by pass valve and a calibrated pressure gauge to indicate
the pressure on the pipe work.
• Ensure the calibration certificate for the pressure gauge is valid.
• Attach a drain valve at the lowest part of the pipe work, an air
release valve at the highest point of the pipe work along with an isolation
valve and a calibrated pressure gauge at the farthest end of the pipe work
under testing, to indicate the pressure of water within the pipe.
• Once the visible checks are satisfactory, start filling the pipe work
with clean water of ambient temperature.
• During the process of pipe filling, keep the air release valve isolation
valve opened in order to purge any air in the pipe work.
• Once the pipe work is filled with water, close the test water inlet and
Air release valve. Observe any leakage and If found, immediately rectify
before proceeding.

• If there is no sign of leakage, increase the water pressure in the pipe


work gradually in increment of 2 bars.

• After increasing every 2 bar pressure, check and ensure there is no


leakage, and hold for 10-15 minutes before applying pressure again.
• On reaching pressure test value, close all valves. Ensure that, the
valves will not be operated by any unauthorized personnel.
• Log the readings in the Pressure Testing form and sign off.
• Keep the report in safe custody, for future reference.

6.1.1 TESTING PROCEDURE (SPRINKLER SYSTEM)

• Ensure the testing and installation of piping is completed


• Check the installation of the fire pump and water supply system shall
be completed along with water

• Check the alarm check valve, mechanical alarm gong, trim


connection with fire alarm system with all necessary valves, flow detector,
switches etc.
• Ensure sprinkler and standpipe system interface connections with
fire alarm system with all necessary valves, flow detector, switches etc.
• Testing of the sprinkler system involves the verification of water
flow alarm (pressure switch/water flow/detector) in the system. Testing
is done as indicated below.
• Close the butterfly valve/0S&Y gate valve for two or three turns and
observe for the fault indication on the Fire Alarm Control Panel.
• Check the display on the Fire Alarm Control Panel and verify that
correct valve is identified.
• Open the test and drain valve of sprinkler zone control valve and
observe for activation of water flow detector of the sprinkler zone and the
activation of the corresponding alarm valve. Activation of water flow
detector/pressure switch is verified by the activation of an alarm from
Alarm System within the premises.
• Check the display on the FACP and verify that correct zone number,
area are displayed.
• Repeat the above test for all other zones and record it on the
attached test sheets.
• If any device is found defective during testing, conduct a reset until
satisfactory results are obtained

6.1.1 TESTING OF STANDPIPE SYSTEM

• Open the hose valve fully.


• Take out the nozzle from the rack and direct it towards a place
where water can be discharged freely.
• Open the nozzle full and check the throw of water and check the
residual pressure. Note the pressure reading of the gauge.

• Keep the nozzle on spray option and ensure that it is giving a


discharge in a spray pattern.
• Repeat the above test for all other hose stations.

7.0 QUALITY CONTROL

Quality Control activities shall be carried out as per the company


requirements and general practice during Installation, Testing &
Commissioning of Fire Protection Systems completed by QC Inspector / QC
Engineer. A checklist for carrying out inspection and the quality control
activities for firefighting Installation, Testing & Commissioning is mentioned
in the Inspection & Test Plan attached in attachment.

8.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY


Safety Instructions
• Project HSE plan & DCA fire and safety regulation is to be strictly
followed.
• Ensure that all personnel are issued with and instructed the use of
personal protective equipment like insulated tools and tackles, protective
gloves etc.
• Safe access is required for the work place.
• All power hand tool's voltage to be 110 V and stationary machines
(threading, grooving) to be 230 Volts.
• Prior to beginning any work on the installed firefighting system,
notify the responsible maintenance wing and fire brigade as applicable.
Do not shut down any system without prior authorization
• Before Re-Energizing any system after a shutdown ,notify all
concerned
• Mandatory for Recommended Warning/ Safety Notices.

Door Notices
• Warning notices are required at all exists and entrances to protect
the area, ideally mounted on the door. Plates may be drilled and screw fixed
or attached using suitable adhesive.

Fire Protection / Precautions


• Ensure that all firefighting equipment is fully tested and operational at all
times.
• Obtain hot work permits prior to starting any hot work.
• Keep suitable type and capacity of fire extinguisher for ready access.

Escape Routes
Ensure all escape routes are kept clear.
• Prior to starting any service work or maintenance on any system, ensure
that there is an adequate means of escape in case of an emergency.
• Ensure that the escape route and nearest exit is understood by all personnel.
• When working within confined spaces, ensure that route to the nearest
escape route is accessible.

Identification/ Labelling of Plant, Equipment & Systems


• Periodically check and ensure the plant / equipment identification and
relevant warning/ procedural signage are intact.

• Tampered or unclear signs and identifications should be made good


immediately.

Protective Equipment
• When undertaking repair and maintenance works, use adequate personnel
and protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, helmet, safety shoes etc.,
as necessary.
• Wear full body harness when working at heights exceeding 4.5 meters.
• Check with the Safety Department at the authority office for particular
information on working at any special equipment/ system.

manual.
