Mathematical Problem-Solving Task Assignment

1. Grade Level: 3rd Grade Mathematical Concept: Determine the area of a rectangle and

apply the concept of addition and multiplication

Standard: Eligible Content - M03.D-M.3.1.2 Multiply side lengths to find areas of

rectangles with whole-number side lengths in the context of solving real-world and

mathematical problems, and represent whole-number products as rectangular areas in

mathematical reasoning.

2. Problem-Based Task: Area of rectangular classroom objects

3. Task Description: There will be 4 different stations across the room. Students will be

separated into appropriate groupings. They will then go around and find the area of these

classroom objects. Students will need a ruler, pencil, worksheet, and scrap paper, and the

classroom objects will be available.

4. This activity is significant because it addresses important mathematics topics for a third-

grade level. This activity allows for cooperative learning from students because they are

problem-solving together. There will be different ways to get the answer and depending

on the classroom object, there will be different answers (For example: a bookshelf has

multiple sides, and the children may measure a different side). This is a real-world

activity because it involves everyday objects the students use. Students will be able to
have a discussion about their problem-solving process and communicate with each other

in groups.
