COURSE INTRODUCTION: BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE CHURCH


 God created all things (world and human), and created “paradise” where there was harmony,
justice, peace, and joy
 Adam and Eve were the first human beings who committed sin
 SACRAMENT – means channel, representative, visible sign of an invisible reality; it is also an
encounter between God and a human being
 The first name of the church was THE WAY
 The members of the church are called CHRISTIANS in Antioch
 ONE HOLY CATHOLIC APOSTOLIC is the official name of the church today.
 Diocesan – priests serving in local places
 Monks – live a simple life; e.g. Sisters of Saint Claire in Iguig
 Dominicans – founded by St. Dominic in France
 Augustinians – no specific founder
 Jesuits/ Society of Jesus – founded by Ignatius of Loyola
 CICM – an arm for evangelization; Theophile Verbist was the founder
- Strategy is to evangelize people and establish a school that has Christian Faith
Education as CORE in the curriculum
- USL’s father founder was Fr. Constant Jurgens, CICM

THE CREATION, DISRUPTION AND RESTORATION OF CREATION


 Abraham – Father of Multitude, God called him to leave his homeland. Father of those who
believe
 God created the earth in a very good condition.
 Jacob has 12 children (12 Tribes of Israel)
 Jesus is the sacrament of God, the corner stone of the church
 Holy Spirit – guided the apostles to continue the mission of Jesus in establishing the Church
 10 commandments - gift given to the Israelites when they experienced salvation from their
slavery in Egypt
 Pentecost - the feast of the Israelites when the Holy Spirit came down to the Early Church
 Resurrection – 3 days after the death of Jesus
 Ascension – 40 days after the death of Jesus
 Pope – the leader of the church
 Peter – leader of the Apostles
 Apostles – instruments chosen by Jesus to spread the Good news
 3 Promises of God to Abraham:

 A Great Nation: God promised Abraham that He would make him the father of a great
nation. Abraham's descendants would be numerous, forming a mighty people.
 Land: God promised to give Abraham and his descendants the land of Canaan, which is
often referred to as the Promised Land.
 Blessing to All Nations: God promised that through Abraham, all the families of the
earth would be blessed. This is often understood as a reference to the eventual coming of
the Messiah through Abraham's lineage.
 Paul went to Genties (Whole World) to spread the good news
 Jesus – the word became flesh
 Free will allows human beings to make choices, but moral guidance is necessary.
 The original state of creation reflects God’s plan for a peaceful, ordered, and harmonious
existence.
 The story of Noah reflects God’s judgment and mercy by preserving Noah’s family, showing
that righteousness leads to salvation.
