• 8003 chassis
• 8006 chassis
• 8010 chassis
• 8010co chassis
Prerequisites
• This product is intended for qualified service personnel who need to
add or replace an AC power supply in a 8000 Series chassis. Due
to high energy hazards greater than 240 VA, only qualified service
personnel are permitted to install and replace Ethernet Routing Switch
8600 components.

The total input power consumption of the components (modules and fan
trays or cooling module) must not exceed the output power rating of the
power supply.
Nortel recommends that you operate the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600
system in a redundant configuration at all times to ensure a maximum
network up time.
Figure 1
8005 AC redundant power supply configuration — 1
You can operate the 8005 AC and 8005DI AC power supplies separately,
in parallel, or parallel redundant configurations. The 8005DI AC power
supply can receive AC input power from two different AC power sources.
This allows the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 to maintain full operation if
you operate the 8005DI AC power supply from an A or B AC input feed
alone.
ATTENTION
Nortel recommends that you install each power supply on its own dedicated
branch circuit for electrical installation reasons.
You can configure the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 with any combination
of 8005 AC and 8005DI AC input power supplies, depending on the
system load and power system requirements for redundancy. For feed
redundancy, you can install up to three 8005DI AC power supplies.
Figure 2 "Dual input power supply configuration — 2" (page 25) shows
a redundant power configuration for protection from power feed loss or
power supply failure, but not both.
Figure 2
Dual input power supply configuration — 2
Figure 3 "Dual input power supply configuration — 3" (page 26) shows a
redundant power configuration for true N + 1 redundancy, for example,
protection from simultaneous power supply failure and power feed loss.
Figure 3
Dual input power supply configuration — 3
Figure 4
8003AC power supply
For information about the specifications of the 8003AC power supply, see
“Specifications: 8003AC power supply” (page 59).
For the 8003 chassis, the number of power supplies (one or two) that you
need to install depends on whether you want an optional redundant power
supply.
The 8003 chassis with the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 Software
Release 5.0 does not support the following R or RS modules:
• 8630GBR
• 8648GTR
• 8683XLR
• 8612XLRS
• 8648GTRS
• 8634XGRS
• 8648GBRS
ATTENTION
Nortel recommends that you install each power supply on its own dedicated
branch circuit for electrical installation reasons.
Figure 5
8004AC power supply
When you configure an Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 system, you must
consider total power consumption to ensure proper system performance.
The total input power consumption of the components (modules and fan
trays or cooling modules) must not exceed the output power rating of the
8004AC power supply. For more information about the output power rating
of the 8004AC power supply, see “Electrical specifications for AC power
supply” (page 59).
Figure 6
8005AC power supply
For information about the specifications of the 8005AC power supply, see
“Specifications: 8005AC power supply” (page 61).
The total input power consumption of the components (modules and fan
trays or cooling modules) must not exceed the output power rating of the
8005AC power supply.
When you configure an Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 system, you must
consider total power consumption to ensure proper system performance.
On the 8005DI AC power supply, the two AC input sources can be out of
synchronization with each other, having a different voltage, frequency,
phase rotation, and phase angle as long as the power characteristics
for each separate input AC source remain within the range of the
manufacturer’s specifications.
The total input power consumption of the components (modules and fan
trays or cooling module) must not exceed the output power rating of the
8005DI AC power supply.
The 8005DI AC power supply has two active input LEDs, one green LED
for each line cord to indicate which line is active. For more information
about 8005DI AC power supply LEDs, see “Power supply LEDs” (page
32).

ATTENTION
Software checks
If the total power provided by the power supplies falls below the switch
requirement, the polling software displays the following message on the console:
chCheckPowerUsage: One or more cards running low on power.
You can view the total amount of power the switch uses and the total
amount of power the power supplies provide by using the following
commands:
• CLI command – show sys-info
• NNCLI command – show sys-info
• Device Manager – Access the Chassis/ Edit menu
CAUTION
Risk of service loss
Nortel does not support 8001AC power supply with R or RS
modules. R or RS modules installed in the 8006, 8010, or
8010co chassis require the 8004AC, 8005AC, or 8005DI AC
power supplies.
The Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 chassis ships with no installed power
supplies. Power supply bays are numbered 1, 2, and 3, left to right, as
viewed from the front of the chassis for the 8006, 8010, and 8010co.
Power supply bays are numbered 1 and 2, left to right, for the 8003
chassis. Install the first power supply in the left-most bay.
CAUTION
Risk of service loss
The 8004AC, 8005AC, and 8005DI AC power supplies have
different power ratings. Therefore, Nortel recommends that you
do not operate the 8000 Series chassis with dissimilar power
supply ratings.
If you have a redundant power configuration, you can hot swap
the 8004AC power supply with the 8005AC and 8005DI AC
power supply while the Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 system
remains in operation. Do not operate the chassis with a mix of
power supply models for an extended period of time.
Upgrade the power supplies before you upgrade the modules.
For example, do not operate the 8000 series chassis with the 8004AC and
8005AC power supplies.
You can operate the Ethernet Routing Switch 8000 series chassis with
8005AC and 8005DI AC power supplies as these power supplies have the
same power ratings.
