BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI

HYDERABAD CAMPUS
Prime Movers & Fluid Machines (ME F341)
Second Semester 2022-23
Mid-Semester Examination (CLOSED BOOK) Time: 90 min
Date 14/03/2023 Marks: 50
Note: Write Q 1 at the beginning of your answer sheet only.

Q 1. Write the answers to the below questions very briefly or represent them crisply and clearly.
[7x2M]

A. Explain why the fluid jet is deflected by the buckets by 160 to 1650 instead of 1800 in the
Pelton turbine.

B. If the diameter of the centrifugal pump impeller is doubled, but the discharge is to remain
the same, then the head needs to be reduced by “____” times. Why?

C. When a centrifugal pump is started, there will be no flow of water until the pressure rise in
the impeller is large enough to overcome the static head OR total head OR manometric head
OR friction head and why?

D. Draw clearly various inlet and outlet velocity triangles (with all notations) that a Francis
turbine can have (i) fast speed and (ii) slow speed runner.

E. Typically, how many blades are used in Francis Turbine and Kaplan Turbine? Why are they
different in numbers?

F. Draw an outlet velocity triangle and name the blade profile of a Centrifugal Pump when i) the
head increases with discharge and ii) the head decreases with discharge.

G. What is ‘’Slip’’? In the case of reciprocating pumps, whether the “Slip” is positive or negative
and why?

Note: Write solution for Q 2, Q 3 and Q 4 after attempting Q 1.

Q 2. The penstock supplies water from a reservoir to the Pelton wheel with a gross head of 500
m. One-third of the gross head is lost in friction in the penstock. The rate of flow water through
the nozzle fitted at end of the penstock is 2 m3/s. The angle of deflection of the jet is 165°.
Determine the power given by the water to the runner in kW and also the hydraulic efficiency
of the Pelton wheel. Take speed ratio = 0.45, and Cv = 1. Ignore the fluid friction over the blade.
[12M]

Q 3. The following data pertains to the Francis turbine. Shaft power = 1000 kW, head = 250 m,
overall efficiency = 85%, speed = 540 rpm, velocity of flow at inlet = 9 m/s. The ratio of width-
to-diameter of the wheel at the inlet = 1/10, hydraulic efficiency = 87%, and the area occupied
by the thickness of blades = 7.5%. Find
(i) the area of flow at the inlet in m2,
(ii) the angle made by the fluid while entering the blade,
(iii) the blade velocity at the inlet in m/s, and
(iv) the velocity of whirl in m/s at the inlet if the discharge is radial.
[12M]

Q 4. A single-acting reciprocating pump has a piston diameter of 125 mm and a stroke length of
300 mm. The center of the pump is 4 m above the water surface in the sump and 24 m below
the delivery water level. Both the suction and delivery pipes have the same diameter of 100
mm and are 6 m and 30 m long respectively. If the pump is working at 50 rpm, determine:
(i) the pressure heads on the piston at the beginning, middle, and end of the
delivery stroke in meters of water column (absolute),
(ii) the power required to drive the pump in W.
Take atmospheric pressure as 10.3 m of water, neglect head loss due to friction.
