CASE STUDY:
37. If a metal is reactive its surface may be attacked slowly by the moisture in the atmosphere. The metal
reacts with the oxygen and water vapour in air forming compounds in its surface. The formation of these
compounds tarnishes the metal and is called corrosion.
A. When Iron is exposed to moist air, a brown flaky substance is formed. Write its name and
formula.
B. What is an amalgam? Name an alloy.

38. All the organisms depend on the sun for their constant need of energy. The energy enters the food chain
as the radiant energy of sunlight in the form of electro-magnetic waves. This energy is absorbed in the
first level of food chain and then proceeds through the herbivore level to the carnivore level. The green
plants trap solar energy with the help of chlorophyll and convert it into chemical energy by the process
of photosynthesis. This energy is stored in the plants as carbohydrates. When plants are eaten by
herbivores, the chemical energy stored in plant food is transferred to them. Herbivores are eaten by
carnivores and the energy stored in the flesh of the herbivores is transferred to the carnivores. This
transfer of energy from one trophic level to the other is called transfer of energy in a food chain of an
ecosystem.

39. Case Study: In an electrical circuit, it is usually necessary to combine two or more resistors to get the
required current in the circuit. The combined resistance of any number of resistances connected in

resistance of the circuit.
B Study the following V-I graph for three conductors A, B and C and find:

of 20 V if 40 J of work is done.
(ii). The figure below shows three cylindrical copper conductors along with their face areas
and lengths. Discuss in which geometrical shape the resistance will be highest.

D. Deduce the expression for the equivalent resistance of parallel combination of three resistors R₁, R₂
and R₃ with a circuit diagram.
