PEL202:VERBAL ABILITY AND READING COMPREHENSION

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: identify different sentences on the basis of grammatical construction

CO2 :: apply academic vocabulary in everyday interactions

CO3 :: employ their reading fluency skills through extensive reading

CO4 :: outline inferences and predictions based on comprehension of the text

CO5 :: evaluate their ability in using the language effectively

CO6 :: write simple sentences without committing errors of spelling and grammar

Unit I
Grammar or English Usage : parts of speech, articles, clauses, tenses, subject-verb agreement,
usage of modal verbs
Unit II
Sentence Correction : identifying errors, tense-verb consistency

Unit III
Sentence Completion : finding odd sentence, maintaining parallelism, fill in the blanks

Unit IV
Vocabulary and Verbal Reasoning : antonyms, synonyms, meaning/usage match, one word
substitution, analogies and reverse analogies, idioms and phrases, verbal reasoning
Unit V
Para-Jumbles : jumbled sentences and paragraphs, close passage

Unit VI
Reading Comprehension : understanding main points, identifying co-relation of sentences and
paragraphs, collocation, skimming, summary questions, facts, inferences, judgements
