Update Page: is used to enable a single click update system on your charts. When enabled, single clicking on any data file listed in the Data Files window will update the current chart. This is a great time saver if you are only wanting to have a quick glance at a few charts.

Number of Blank Bars: This value relates to the amount of space displayed on the right hand side of the chart. After the last bar there will be an area of blank charting space used for plotting tools and indicators into the future. Increasing this value will increase the amount of blank space.

Lock Price Ratio: Allows you to lock the Price / Time ratio so that changing zoom levels, and moving back and forward through the chart does not affect Geometric tools applied to the chart. Note: This option is only available in Gann and Astronomical Editions of Market Analyst.

Logarithmic Scale: Logarithmic Charts allow you to see vertical changes in terms of value rather than price. On a Logarithmic Scale Chart, the vertical spacing between two points corresponds to the percentage change between those numbers. Thus, on a Logarithmic Scale Chart, the vertical distance between 10 and 20 (a 100% increase) is the same as the vertical distance between 50 and 100. Because these charts show percentage relationships, logarithmic scaling is also called "percentage" scaling. It is also called "semi-log" scaling because only one of the axes (the vertical one) is scaled logarithmically.

SECTION 4
An Overview of Market Analyst Tools

To make the selection and application of analysis techniques even easier and faster, Market Analyst has introduced an entirely new concept for applying tools. Market Analyst allows you to place your favourite indicators onto a tool bar for single click access, or into a favourites folder where you can save multiple settings for a single tool.

Tool Interface The tools interface in Market Analyst is a unique layout that has been designed with smooth flow and speed of access in mind. Each tool group is represented by an icon on the outer wheel. Hovering over these icons will display a list of the tools from the group. To select a tool, simply left click the tool name in the centre of the wheel. The interface will then close, and you will be able to apply the tool to any of the visible charts.

To open the tools interface window, left click the Tools menu button once

You can use the scroll wheel on your mouse to adjust the position of the Tool Groups located on the outer ring.

Tool Group Icon

Close Icon

Tool Groups are displayed on an outer ring. To see which tools are contained in a particular group, move your mouse cursor over the Tool Group icon. When a Tool Group is selected it will increase in size and highlight. In the centre of the outer ring, a list of tools available in the selected Tool Group will be displayed.

33

Market Analyst - Getting Started Manual

To select a tool, locate it in the list displayed in the centre of the window and left click it once. The tool interface window will close and the chart will be displayed. When a tool is selected, your mouse cursor will change to display an icon, indicating Market Analyst is waiting for you to apply the tool. If you have selected the wrong tool, pressing Esc on your keyboard will deselect the tool. Tool Search When you enter the tools window, you have the ability to type in a search criteria, which narrows down the list of available tools. This is a great function when you are unsure which Tool Group a specific tool is saved in.

To start a search, simply open the Tools window and begin typing the search criteria. As you type, the list of available tools will begin to shorten. Eventually only those tools that contain the word(s) you have entered will be displayed. In this example the word Moving has been entered into the search window. As a result, only those tools containing the word Moving are displayed. We could refine our search by adding additional words such as Bands.

Custom Tool Folders Custom Tools folder is a great location to save all your favourite tools into one group, using the settings you want. You can even add the same tool multiple times with different settings. To add a custom tool to your Custom Tools folder, apply the tool to the chart. Adjust the tools settings as required. With the tool still selected, go to the Actions part of the Control Panel located on the left hand side of the screen, and click the Add Tool to Group option.

The Add Custom Tool window will be displayed. Enter a unique name for the tool, and select My Folder from the folders list. Note The Image Drop down list is not available for custom tools. Left click on the Save button. The custom tool will be available to select from the custom tool folder group.

SECTION 5
Using Templates

Templates are a great time saving function in Market Analyst. Templates allow you to set up a page, or workbook using various time frames, tools and chart styles and have those settings used for any new pages that you open. For example, if you always use a 150 period Moving Average on your charts, and prefer Swing Relations as your Bar Charts colour scheme, you can set up this layout once as a Template. With that Template selected, all new charts that you open will display the Moving Average and preferred Colour Scheme.

Creating and Saving Templates There are two types of Templates available in Market Analyst, Page Templates and Workbook Templates. This tutorial will guide you through setting up a Page Template, and will include additional information on Workbook Templates at the end.

Creating the Template 1. 2. Not all tools are compatible with Templates. Specifically only those tools that do not require you to select a starting point on the chart will work. Some examples of tools that will work are Moving Averages, Volume and MACDs. Some examples of tools that will not work are Trend Lines, Price Extensions / Retracements and Ellipse. Open a chart for any security. Adjust the charts Properties to display as desired (for example set up the colour scheme as Swing Relations. Ensure the charts time frame is set as desired (1 Day for example). Apply any tools you want displayed on the chart. With all the tools applied, ensure the chart looks exactly the way you want it to for all new pages that you open (items such as zoom level, etc).

3. 4. 5.

Once you are happy with the page layout, you can save the Template. Saving the Template With the chart ready to be saved as a Template, right click on a blank area of the chart. Go to the Actions icon of the right click interface and select the option Save Page As Template. Left click this action once. In the window that opens, enter a File Name for the new Template and click Save to continue.

Using Templates Opening a new chart with a Template With the Template file saved you can now use it to open new charts. To do this, click on the New menu and select the Page Template option. In the menu displayed will be a list of previously saved Templates. Locate the Template you wish to use and left click once.

In the window displayed, enter the code of the security you want to open and press Enter on your keyboard.

38

Market Analyst - Getting Started Manual

The chart will open with the selected template applied to it.

Zoom Setting Chart Style Tools

Applying a Template to a page that has already been opened If you already have a page opened and you want to apply a Template to it, go to the Actions bar located on the left hand side of Market Analyst locate the Apply Template to Current Page icon and left click once.

In the window displayed, locate the Template you want to apply and double click it. The page will then update with the Template settings.

Any tools that are already applied to the page(s) of existing charts will be removed and replaced by the Template. If you have existing work that you want to save on your charts, you should not use the Template function.

Applying a Template to an entire Workbook If you have a number of pages already open in a Workbook, you do not need to apply the Template to each page manually. You can use the Apply Template to Complete Workbook function located on the Action bar on the left hand side of the Market Analyst window.

Workbook Templates Workbook Templates are similar to Page Templates. They are used to open Workbooks with preset layouts. The difference is that a Workbook Template will open multiple pages for the one security, whereas Page Template will open only a single page tab. An example of a Workbook Template would be creating three pages, the first a Bar Chart with Moving Averages and Volume applied. The second page would be a Gann Swing Chart with labels enabled, and the third would be a Point and Figure Chart with a unit price of .10. Three Pages across three page tabs to make one complete Workbook. Once saved as a Workbook Template, you could create the same Workbook for any security with a single click.

39

Market Analyst - Getting Started Manual

Copyright 2010 Market Analyst International Pty Ltd \(under license\)

A common question is do templates work with tiled pages? The answer is yes, as long as the tiled pages are all for the same security, Templates will open new tiled pages.

Saving Workbook Templates Create a Workbook for one security. There is no limit to the number of pages you can open, but it must be for the same security. You can use any time frame, or chart styles that you like, however as with Page Templates there are limitations to the tools you can use. Refer to the above Page Template section for additional details. With the Workbook created, click the File menu and select the Save Workbook as Template option. Type a File Name into the window that opens and click Save to continue.

Using a Workbook Template

Click on the New menu and select the Workbook Template option. In the menu displayed you will see a list of previously saved Workbook Templates. Left click on the Template you want to use and enter the code for the security you want to use the template on. The pages will open with the Template layout applied.

Ignoring Codes and Multi Date Scans When running a scan, there are two additional options available for you to choose:

Ignore codes over 3 characters. Scan to show all dates passing all criteria.

This section will take you through exactly what these items are, and how they can affect your scans. These two options are located just above the Scan Results window.

60

Market Analyst - Getting Started Manual

Copyright 2010 Market Analyst International Pty Ltd \(under license\)

Ignore codes over 3 characters

When this option is enabled, the scan being executed will ignore any securities / codes in the data group that contain more than three characters.

This can be particularly handy if you wish to ignore items such as preference shares, or if your data provider mixes options, warrants and shares into the same folder.

To enable the Ignore Codes option, left click once on the checkbox. The item will be displayed as ticked. To disable the Ignore Codes option, left click the checkbox again, and the item will display as un-ticked.

Scan to show all dates passing all criteria

This option is helpful when you want to identify any securities that have met your criteria more than once over a selected date range.

The scan results window will display the security, and the date it met the criteria. If the security met the criteria more than once, two or more entries for this code will be displayed.

In this example AAN has met the criteria 3 times.

The dates the security passed are listed here.

IMPORTANT: This checkbox should only be ticked when you are scanning more than one day. To enable the Scan to Show All Dates option, left click once on the checkbox. The item will be displayed as ticked. To disable the Scan to Show All Dates option, left click the checkbox again, and the item will display as un-ticked.

SECTION 8
Training simulation and system testing

Implementing a new trading plan, or testing an existing one can often be a time consuming exercise, as you need to wait for the days to pass before results start appearing. To overcome this, Market Analyst brings to you an excellent training tool called the Trade Tracker, which allows you to do in minutes what would otherwise take weeks. With a couple of clicks of the mouse, you can take your chart back in time two weeks or even two years, and simply add one bar at a time, effectively giving you a real trading simulation. While your charts are updating, all of the indicators that you have applied are also updating, allowing you to see weeks of trading action within a matter of minutes.

Training Mode

Turning on Training Mode Located on the left hand side of the Market Analyst window is the Actions Bar. To enable training mode left click the Training Mode button.

Once enabled a Training On watermark will be displayed on the chart and the Training Mode interface will become available:

62

Market Analyst - Getting Started Manual

Copyright 2010 Market Analyst International Pty Ltd \(under license\)

To view the Training Mode Console, move your cursor over the Training On label.

This console window is broken down as follows:

Date and Time of the last bar being displayed on the chart. Time Interval to be added / removed from the chart. Number of Intervals to be added / removed at one time. Add / Remove bars. Opens the Trade Tracker Report Window

Plots an Exit Point to the chart using the Trade Tracker. Plots an Entry Point to the chart using the Trade Tracker.

To turn the training mode off, go to the Actions Bar on the left hand side of the Market Analyst window and left click the Training Mode button.

Using Training Mode

With the training mode enabled on a chart you can hide bars from view. To do this you will first need to set the Time Interval and Interval amounts you want to use. Swing Charts and Training Mode Training Mode can be used with Swing Charts, however you need to ensure the Time Interval is set to something other than Bar. This is due to the way Swing Charts are formulated. With the Training Mode Console in view, use the slider bars to adjust the interval settings:

The following Time Intervals can be selected: Bar Day Week Month Year

The Interval Amount can be set to any number you want. Sliding the bar to the right will increase the value, and sliding the bar to the left will decrease the value. You can select a training mode date by left clicking on the date displayed on the training mode console.

Once you have set the Time Interval and Interval Amount, use the

symbol to hide bars from view.

63

Market Analyst - Getting Started Manual

Copyright 2010 Market Analyst International Pty Ltd \(under license\)

In this example the same data file is used, however the top chart has Training Mode enabled. Using the Training Mode to hide the last few weeks of price action, you can now apply your analysis to the charts. With the tools and indicators applied, you can begin adding bars back onto the chart and watch how the tools react to the new data.

If using Training Mode on a weekly chart, you need to ensure the date you set Training Mode to is a Friday.

It is at this point you can begin using the Trade Tracker to mark entry and exit points to gauge the effectiveness of your trading plan.

Trade Tracker The Trade Tracker allows you to enter historical entry and exit points (while Training Mode is activated) on a chart. As these entry and exit points are added, a running total of profit and loss is tracked via the Trade Tracker.

The Trade Tracker has been designed to handle both long and short trades. To begin, open a chart and set the Training Mode to the date you want to start from. From there, left click the Enter button once on a bar where the system you are testing indicates a buy signal. When you click on Enter, a menu will be displayed with two options, Long and Short. Based on the type of trade you are making, left click once on the desired option. An entry arrow will be added to the bar to mark its location.

Arrows for Short Trades will displays as yellow. Arrows for Long trades will display as Green. Arrows for Trade Exists will display as Red.

Once the arrow is displayed on the chart, you can adjust various settings such as purchase price, position and the number of shares you purchased.

64

Trade Tracker Properties

Size: Allows you to adjust the size of the arrow. Moving the slider bar to the left will decrease the size and moving it to the right will increase the size. Trade Action: Indicates the action of the arrow you had selected (Entry or Exit). Price Type: Allows you to select the Open, Close or User Defined price for the Trade Tracker to calculate from. Compound Interest: Allows you to re-invest any profits you have made from previous trades into the current trade. Amount Invested: Displays the dollar value of the current trade. Type: trades. Quantity: Allows you to switch between Long and Short

Allows you to set the number of shares purchased at the selected price.

Price Per Contract, Price Per Point and Point Movements are all used with Futures contracts, or Foreign Exchange data. Transparency: Allows you to adjust the transparency of the Trade Tracker arrow.

Visible: Allows you to hide or display the selected Trade Tracker arrow.

Once you have set up the entry details, continue adding bars to the chart via the Training Mode Console. Once your trading plan indicates a sell signal, left click the Exit button. An Exit arrow will be added to the bar to mark its location.

You can repeat this process as many times as required, mixing short and long trades together. Once you have finished entering your buy and sell items to the chart, you can click the Report button to generate a summary of how profitable the system was.

In this example you can see entry and exit arrows have been added.

Trade Tracker Report

The Trade Tracker Report will break down the trades you have placed on the chart and display a number of statistics. These include: Win / Loss Ratios Total Profit / Loss Average Profit Across All trades Biggest Profit Biggest Loss Most Consecutive Wins Average Trade Length Long vs. Short Trades

You can also Print this information out for future reference.

System Tester The System Tester combines the power of the Scanning Manager and Trade Tracker into one module that will provide a fast and simple method for evaluating your trading plans.

It is important to understand that the Market Analyst System Tester is in no way a black box system, and will not give you buy or sell signals. It is a module designed to aid you in testing your trading strategy in a simulated environment. Past performance does not guarantee future profits.

To start a new System Test, click on the New menu and left click the System Test option. The Data File selector window will display. Enter the code for the security you want to run a system test on and press Enter on your keyboard.

The System Tester window will open.

Creating a New System Test

To create a new System Test click on the New button.

The System Test Wizard will display. In the first window enter a Name for the new System Test. Once a name has been entered, adjust the Type as required. The three options available are Long, Short and Both. Select the price the Entry / Exit trades use (Day of Signal (Close) or Day After Signal (Open)). The system test will not perform correctly if the Amount Invested is not set to a real world value. Leaving this value as 1 will generally mean no results are displayed at the end of a System Test. Enter the amount of starting capital the System Test can use in the Amount Invested section. If you wish to re-invest the profits made by previous trades into future trades, tick the ReInvest Profits checkbox.

If you want to close any open trades at the end of the system test, ensure the Close all positions after last day checkbox is ticked. If you are using the System Tester for Futures or Foreign Exchange charts, there are three additional options you can set up. They are Price per Contract, Price Per Point and Point Movement. Once all the required information has been entered, click the Next button.

In the second window that opens you will need to enter your entry and exit criteria. To do this, left click on the Add button located in the Entry Scans section. In the window displayed locate the required criteria. Left click it to highlight the criteria you wish to add, and click the Select button to add it to the list.

67

Market Analyst - Getting Started Manual

The Properties for the selected criteria will be displayed on the right hand side of the window. Adjust the Properties as required. Once you have entered all your entry criteria, repeat the above steps to add your exit criteria. Once you have completed both the entry and exit criteria sections, click Next to continue.

You will be taken to the Run System Test window. If you want to run the System Test straight away, leave the checkbox ticked and click the Finish button. The system test will run. Once completed the results will be displayed on the right hand side window.

The Summary window will display the same details as the Trade Tracker report (Number of Trades, Total Profit, etc). To view a breakdown of each trade, click on the Detail page tab at the top of the report window.

Each trade is colour coded to indicate the result of the trade. White is used for all entries, blue for profitable exits and red for exits that produced a loss.

From this window you can Export the report to a CSV file for use in 3rd party programs such as Notepad or MS Excel. The export button is located on the top left corner of the report window.

You can also plot each trade directly to the chart for more detailed analysis. To do this left click the Chart Trades button located just above the Detail page tab.

SECTION 9
Practical time savers and tips

This section will cover a number of useful suggestions on how to enhance your experience with Market Analyst.

Market Analyst Colours Tweaking the colour scheme

In Section 1 we covered the preset colour schemes available for use in Market Analyst. This section will cover how to select a custom colour scheme, and adjust various settings such as tool tip transparency. To access the Colour Scheme selector, click on the Settings menu button located along the top of the Market Analyst window. In the menu displayed, left click the General Settings option. In the General Settings window that displays, left click the Chart Colours tab on the left hand side. The following window will display:

Click on the drop down arrow next to Layout Themes and select Custom from the list.

Additional settings will be added to the bottom of the page.

The first two settings allow you to adjust the font settings for Labels (for example those displayed on a Gann Swing Chart, when labels are enabled). The Chart Font allows you to adjust the settings used for the Time and Price Scales. Highlight Intensity Located on the top right corner of the colour scheme window is a slider bar for highlight intensity. If you find you are having trouble noticing the highlight effect displayed when your mouse is placed over a chart or tool, use this slider to increase the intensity of the highlight effect. To adjust the colour of an item, left click the preview window once to select it. There are four areas you can select: The Time / Price Scales The Tips window The History Bar The History Bar Slider

When you select one of the above items, the settings at the bottom of the window will update. Once you have selected your desired colour scheme, click Ok to apply the changes.

Backups Market Analyst contains an automated backup system, where once a week (by default) your work will be copied to a backup folder located in My Documents. This is a great way to ensure unintended changes to workbooks, portfolios, etc can be reversed if needed. This however does not protect you if your system crashes and you lose all of your saved information. As a result, we have added an option in Market Analyst that allows you to perform a manual backup of all your work to a USB Stick or other networked drive. To do this, click on the Settings menu button located at the top of the Market Analyst window. In the menu displayed left click the General Settings option. In the General Settings window that opens, left click on the Backup tab located on the left hand side. The following window will display:

The top section deals with the frequency of your automated backups. You can also disable the automated updates if you wish. The mid section will display a list of existing backups. From here you can select an older backup and restore the information. The lower section covers the manual backups. To backup your information to a USB stick, connect it to your system, and click the Browse Location button. Navigate to the USB Stick and click Save. With the USB Stick selected, click the Backup Now button, located on the top right corner of the window. The backup will be created, protecting your work from fatal system crashes.

Advanced Restore Feature When a backup is performed by Market Analyst, all information that is not replaced by a new installation (such as workbooks, templates, settings, etc) is copied. However, if the need arises to restore an item from a backup file, you are given the ability to restore a specific section or item. For example, if you deleted a favourite template, you could open the latest backup file, navigate down to the template section, select the backed up template, and restore that specific file. This keeps all your other work intact.

Custom Shortcuts While Market Analyst does come with some preset shortcuts, such as F3 to open a Bar Chart, there are many other tasks that can now be assigned a shortcut. To set up your own shortcuts, click on the Settings menu button located along the top of the Market Analyst window. In the menu displayed, left click the General Settings option. In the General Settings window that displays, left click the Shortcuts tab located on the left hand side. The following window will display: A table of all functions that are able to have a shortcut assigned will be displayed. Items already containing a shortcut will display the key stroke(s) in the shortcut column.

If a shortcut is not being accepted, chances are you have already used that combination on a different function.

To set a shortcut for a specific item, left click in the Shortcut column of the item you want to set up. Once selected, press the key(s) you want to set up as the shortcut.

Once you are happy with the key combination, left click once on the command name (Candlestick Chart for example).

The price scale will now display on the left hand side of the chart. You can save this setting as default by left clicking on a blank area of the chart and clicking the Save As Default action displayed on the left panel.

Custom Exchanges

You can now add custom exchanges to your data file selector list. In the past, manually entered codes for a 3rd party live data vendor had to be added to an existing exchange, which after awhile could end up quite messy. The introduction of custom exchanges resolves this issue.
