Excel Tables Notes

This note covers the essentials of creating, formatting, modifying, and


managing data within Excel tables. It's a quick reference guide for working
efficiently with tables in Excel.

Creating Tables
● Convert to Table: Select your data range → Insert tab → Table or use
shortcut Ctrl + T.
● Table Creation Tips:
● Ensure no blank rows or columns within the data range.
● Include headers in the first row for better organization.

Formatting Tables
● Apply Table Styles: Select the table → Table Tools Design tab → Choose a
style in the Table Styles group.
● Customize Table Style:
● Change row/column colors: Right-click on a cell → Table Styles
Options.
● Adjust fonts, borders, and shading using the standard formatting
tools on the Home tab.

Modifying Tables
● Add Rows/Columns:
● Rows: Type directly below the last row or right-click → Insert Table
Rows Above/Below.
● Columns: Type directly next to the last column or right-click →
Insert Table Columns to the Left/Right.
● Delete Rows/Columns:
● Select rows/columns → Right-click → Delete Table Rows/Columns.

● Resize Table: Drag the bottom-right corner of the table.

Filtering and Sorting


● Filtering:
● Click the dropdown arrow in the header cell.
● Choose your filter criteria (text, number, date filters).
● Sorting:
● Simple Sort: Click the dropdown in the header cell → Sort A to Z or
Z to A.
● Multi-level Sort: Data tab → Sort → Add levels and set sorting
priorities.

Advanced Features
● Total Row: Table Tools Design tab → Check Total Row. Customize total
row functions (sum, average, count, etc.).
● Slicers: Table Tools Design tab → Insert Slicer. Provides a user-friendly
way to filter table data.
● Dynamic Named Ranges: Name your table for easy reference in
formulas.

Practical Tips
● Structured References: In formulas, use table column headers instead
of cell references for clarity and accuracy.
● Consistency: Keep your table formatting consistent for readability.
● Data Integrity: Use data validation within tables to maintain data
quality.
