1. INTRODUCTION

Herbal lip balm is a natural alternative to traditional lip balms, formulated with botanical

ingredients such as herbs, plant oils, and beeswax. It offers moisturizing, nourishing, and

soothing benefits to the lips, often without harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances. Herbal lip

balms are appreciated for their gentle yet effective properties, making them a popular choice for

those seeking a more holistic approach to lip care.(1)

1.1 Advantages

Herbal lip balms often offer several advantages over their synthetic counter parts. They can

provide natural hydration and nourishment, contain fewer chemicals, offer soothing properties

from herbs like chamomile or calendula, and may have antioxidant benefits from ingredients like

green tea or vitamin E. Additionally, some people prefer herbal lip balms for their eco-friendliness

and potentially lower environmental impact.(2)

1.2 Ideal Properties of herbal lipbalm

 Natural Ingredients: Made with botanical extracts, essential oils, and natural emollients.

 Moisturizing: Provides deep hydration to lips, preventing dryness and chapping.

 Healing: Contains herbs known for their healing properties, like aloe vera or calendula, to

soothe and repair damaged lips.

 Sun Protection: Includes SPF to shield lips from harmful UV rays.

 Non-Toxic: Free from harsh chemicals, parabens, and artificial fragrances.

 Long-Lasting: Offers lasting moisture without frequent reapplication.

 Gentle: Suitable for sensitive skin and doesn't cause irritation.

 Sustainable: Produced using eco-friendly practices and packaging materials.

 Cruelty-Free: Not tested on animals.(3)

 Appealing Scent: Pleasant aroma from natural ingredients or essential oils.

1.3 How To Apply Lip Balm For The Best Protection

 Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate your lips using a lip scrub or a soft toothbrush to remove any dead

skin cells.

 Cleanse: Wash your face and ensure your lips are clean and dry before applying lip balm.

 Apply a thin layer: Using your finger or a lip balm applicator, apply a thin, even layer of lip balm

to your lips. Start from the center of your lips and work your way outwards, covering the entire

surface.

 Don't forget the corners: Pay special attention to the corners of your lips, as they can easily

become dry and chapped.(4),(5)

 Reapply as needed: Reapply lip balm throughout the day, especially after eating, drinking, or

spending time outdoors.

Dr. Pradeep Pal/Afr.J.Bio.Sc.6(Si4)(2024) Page 3491 of 10

 Protect from the sun: Choose a lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from sun damage.

1.4 Main Category Of Compounds Use For The Preparation Of Herbal Lipbalm

a. Carrier Oils: Use infused oils like olive, coconut, or almond oil. You can infuse these oils with

herbs such as chamomile, calendula, or lavender.

b. Beeswax: This helps to solidify the balm and provides a protective barrier on the lips.(6),(7)

c. Butters: Shea butter, cocoa butter, or mango butter add additional moisture and nourishment.

d. Essential Oils: For fragrance and additional therapeutic benefits, use essential oils like

peppermint, lavender, or vanilla.

e. Optional Additives: Vitamin E oil for its antioxidant properties and honey for extra

moisture.(8),(9)

3. EVALUATION PARAMETER

1. Organoleptic Property :The formulation was studied for physical appearance, colour and odour.

2. PH :The pH meter was used to measure the pH value for both the formulation. The pH meter

was Calibrated using a buffer solution before continuing the pH measurement of the lip balm.

The pH value for the lip balm sample was Measured and recorded.(22)

3. Greasiness :Greasiness test was examined to identify the amount of oil in the formulated lip

balm. In this study, 4 g of lip balm was placed on the filter paper, and the sample was left at

room temperature for 24 hours.

4. Melting Point :The sample of lip balm is taken in a glass capillary whose one end was sealed by

flame. The capillary containing Drug dipped in liquid paraffin inside the melting point

apparatus . Melting was determined and melting point was reported.

5. Skin Irritation test: It is carried out by applying lip balm on the skin for 10 min.

6. Test of spreadability: The test of spreadability consisted of applying the product repeatedly

onto a glass slide to visually observe The uniformity in the formation of the projective layer and

whether the stick fragmented, deformed or broke during Application.Prepared lip balm , initially

has shown G- Good: uniform, no fragmentation, perfect application, with any deformation At

room temperature.(23),(24)

7. Effectiveness test on papers: Finally, after taking out the lip balm from chiller, it was tested by

applying the lip balm on a piece Of paper. This process is important to determine colour

obtained from different sources. It also can determine the effectiveness of Thecolour product.

8. Skin sensitivity: It was carried out by applying the product in the form of a patch on the skin for

30 min and observe the reaction As- N -No reaction.(25),(26)

4. RESULT AND DISCUSSION

1. Melting point :Melting point of lip balm was found to be in the range of 68°C. Which matches

the appropriate melting point of between 65°C-70°C.

2. Organoleptic Properties :

Table No. 3 Observation Of Organoleptic Properties

Parameter Observation (FA) Observation (FB)

Colour Dark Red Light Red

Apperance Excellent smooth Smooth

Odour Pleasant Pleasant

3. Test of Spreadability :Both the prepared formulations has initially shown good and uniform, no

fragmentation perfect application without any deformation at room temperature.

4. Measurement of pH : pH of lip balm was near to neutral pH i.e. 7.2 (FA) , 7.0 (FB) this would not

cause any irritation to lips.

Remaining parameters are also showing satisfactory results.(27)

5. CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this comparative study aimed to evaluate the performance of two herbal lip balm

formulations: one incorporating coconut oil and beeswax, and the other using almond oil and

cocoa butter. Despite the distinct compositions, the evaluation parameters included moisturization

efficacy, texture, stability, and overall user satisfaction. Our findings indicate that both

formulations perform similarly across these metrics, demonstrating effective moisturizing

properties, desirable texture, and consistent stability over time.

Throughout the study, both formulations were subjected to rigorous testing, including stability

assessments under varying temperatures and user feedback surveys. Results showed no

significant differences in terms of their effectiveness in providing lip care. Users reported similar

levels of satisfaction with both products, indicating that either formulation could be preferred

based on personal choice rather than efficacy.

6. SUMMARY

In summary, the study concludes that both herbal lip balm formulations are equally effective in

delivering the desired lip care benefits. Additionally, the ease of availability of these natural

ingredients enhances their appeal, allowing for flexibility in ingredient selection based on local

availability. This finding encourages the use of readily accessible or preferred natural components

without compromising the product's performance, supporting the development of diverse herbal

lip balm options catering to varying consumer preferences and ingredient availability.
