Module 3:
Bandpass modulation & Demodulation technique
 Classification of digital communication based on type of signal.
i) Baseband transmission
ii) Bandpass transmission

• Baseband data transmission: The digital data is transmitted over the

channel directly, there is no carrier or any modulation. This is
suitable for transmission over short distances.
• Bandpass data transmission: The digital data modulates high-
frequency sinusoidal carrier. Hence they are also called digital CW
modulation techniques. These techniques are suitable for transmission
over long distances.
Digital Modulation Formats
The digital data can modulate phase, frequency and amplitude of carrier.
This gives rise to three basic techniques.
Binary Schemes
• Phase Shift Keying(PSK): In this technique, the digital data modulates
phase of the carrier.
• Frequency Shift Keying(FSK): In this technique, the digital data
modulates frequency of the carrier.
• Amplitude Shift Keying(ASK): In this technique, the digital data
modulates amplitude of the carrier.
M-ary Schemes: M-ary PSK, M-ary FSK, QPSK, MSK, QASK or
QAM( It is suitable where high bit rate is required in order to minimize bit
error in the receiving data).
Various digital modulation techniques
Types of Reception for Passband
Transmission
Two types of Digital Detection Techniques:

1)Coherent (Synchronous) Detection: In this method, the local carrier generated at the receiver
is phase locked with the carrier at the transmitter. Hence it is also called synchronous
detection.

1)Non-coherent (Envelope) Detection: In this method, the receiver carrier need not be phase
locked with transmitter carrier. Hence it is called also called envelope detection. Non-coherent
detection is simple but it has higher probability of error.
Requirements of Bandpass Transmission
Scheme

• Any passband transmission scheme should satisfy following

requirements:

-Maximum data transmission rate

-Minimum probability of symbol error
-Minimum transmitted power
-Minimum channel bandwidth
-Maximum resistance to interfering signals.
-Minimum circuit complexity.
Advantages of Passband Transmission over Baseband
Transmission
• Long Distance Transmission.
• Analog channels, can be used for transmission
• Multiplexing techniques can be used bandwidth conservation.
• Problems such as ISI and crosstalk are absent.
• Passband transmission can take place over wireless channels also.
• Large number of modulation techniques are available.

Drawbacks of Passband Modulation

• Transmitting / Receiving antennas, modulation and demodulation
equipment's, interference problems make the system complex.
• It is not suitable for short distance communication.
Passband Transmission Model
Binary Phase Shift Keying
• Definition : Phase of the carrier signal is varied according to the
amplitude of message signal.
• Waveforms of BPSK
Multi Level PSK

N is the number of bits to represent each phase and L is number

of levels which will be showing us how many phases are available
to represent particular bits.
Binary Phase Shift Keying
Bandpass filter : The signal is then pass through the bandpass filter whose passband frequency is centered
around 2fo bandpass filter removes the DC level 1/2

Frequency Divider: Above signal is then passed through frequency divider by 2. So at the output we get carrier
signal whose frequency is fo i.e
Error Probability of BPSK (Coherent Detection):
In Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK), the probability of error refers to the likelihood that a bit is incorrectly decoded
due to noise in the transmission channel. The error occurs when the received signal is mistakenly mapped to the wrong

bit .
