* Answer the following questions. [3 Marks Each] [15]

1. Find the volume of the largest cylinder formed when a rectangular piece of paper
44 cm by 33 cm is rolled along it : shorter side.
Ans. : Length of a rectangular paper = 44 cm
Breadth of a rectangular paper = 33 cm
When the paper is rolled along its shorter side , i.e. vreadth, we have
Height of cylinder = h = 44 cm
Circumference of cross section = 2 π r = 33 cm
22
⇒ 2 × × r = 33

33×7
⇒ r = = 5.25cm

∴ Volume of cylinder = πr h

2. The total surface area of a right circular cone of slant height 13 cm is 90π cm2.
Calculate: its volume in cm3. Take π = 3.14
Ans. : Total surface area of cone = 90π cm2
slant height (l) = 13 cm

3. A cone of height 15 cm and diameter 7 cm is mounted on a hemisphere of same

diameter.Determine the volume of the solid thus formed.
Ans. : Height of cone = 15 cm

* Answer The Following Questions in Brief. [12]

1. The total area of a solid metallic sphere is 1256 cm2. It is melted and recast into
solid right circular cones of radius 2.5 cm and height 8 cm. Calculate: the radius
of the solid sphere.
Ans. : Total area of solid metallic sphere = 1256cm
2

Let radius of the sphere is r then

2
4πr = 1256

22 2
⇒ 4 × r = 1256
7

2 1256×7
⇒ r =

2 157×7
⇒ r =

⇒ r =

1099
⇒ r =

−−−−−
⇒ r = √99.909

⇒ r = 9.995cm ≈ 10cm

2. The height of a circular cylinder is 20 cm and the radius of its base is 7 cm. Find :
the total surface area.

Page 3
Ans. : For a circular cylinder ,
Height = h = 20 cm
Radius of the base = r = 7 cm
Total surface area of a cylinder = 2πr (h + r)
22 2
= 2 × × 7(20 + 7)c m
7

2
= 2 × 22 × 27cm

= 1188 cm2
3. The inner radius of a pipe is 2.1 cm. How much water can 12 m of this pipe hold?
Ans. : Inner radius of pipe = 2.1 cm
Length of the pipe = 12 m = 1200 cm
2
∴ Volume = πr h

22 3
= × 2.1 × 2.1 × 1200c m
7

= 16632 cm3
4. The circumference of the base of a 12 m high conical tent is 66 m. Find the
volume of the aircontained in it.
Ans. : Circumference of the conical tent = 66 m
and height (h) = 12 m
Radius
c 66×7
∴ = = = 10.5m
2π 2×22

Therefore, volume of air contained in it =

5. The diameter of two cones are equal. If their slant heights are in the ratio 5 : 4,
find the ratio oftheir curved surface areas.
Ans. : Let radius of each cone = r
Ratio between their slant heights = 5:4
Let slant height of the first cone = 5x
and slant height of second cone = 4x
Therefore, curved surface area of the first cone = πr × (5x) = 5πrx

curved surface area of the second cone = πrl = πr × (4x) = 4πrx Hence, ratio
between them = 5πrx : 4πrx = 5 : 4
6. The surface area of a solid metallic sphere is 2464 cm2. It is melted and recast
into solid right circular cones of radius 3.5 cm and height 7 cm. Calculate: the
radius of the sphere (Take π = 22/17)
Ans. : Total surface area of the sphere = 4πr2, where r is the radius of the sphere.
Thus,

Page 4
2 2
4πr = 2464c m

22 2
⇒ 4 × ×r = 2464
7

2
⇒ r = 196

⇒ r = 14cm

* Questions with calculation. [4 Marks Each] [8]

7. What length of solid cylinder 2 cm in diameter must be taken to recast into a

hollow cylinder of external diameter 20 cm, 0.25 cm thickand 15 cm long?
Ans. : External diameter of hollow cylinder=20 cm
Therefore , radius=10 cm
Thickness =0.25 cm
Hence, Internal radius=(10-0.25)=9.75 cm
Length of cylinder (h)=15 cm
2 2 2 2
∴ volume = πh (R − r ) = π × 15 (10 − 9.75 )

3
= 15π(100 − 95.0625)cm

3
= 15π × 4.9375cm

Diameter = 2cm
Therefore, radius (r) = 1cm

Let h be the lenght

then, volume = πr2 h = π(1 × 1)h = πh
Now, according to given condition:
πh = 15π × 4.9375

⇒ h = 15 × 4.9375

⇒ h = 74.0625

Length of cylinder = 74.0625cm

8. The radius of a solid right circular cylinder decreases by 20% and its height
increases by 10%. Find the percentage change in its : curved surface area.
Ans. : Curved surface area (Original) of a solid right circular cylinder=2 π rh
= 2 π × 100 × 100
= 20000 π cm2
Curved surface area (New) of a solid right circular cylinder
= 2πr'h'
= 2 π × 80 × 110
= 17600 π cm2
Decrease in curved area
= Original CSA - New CSA
= (20000 π - 17600 π) cm2
= 2400 π cm2

* Answer the following questions. [5 Marks Each] [15]

9. The sum of the inner and the outer curved surfaces of a hollow metallic cylinder
is 1056 cm2and the volume of material in it is 1056 cm3. Find its internal and
external radii. Given that the height of the cylinder is 21 cm.
Ans. : Let R and r be the outer and inner radii of hollow metallic cylinder.
Let h be height of the metallic cylinder.
It is given that
Outer curved surface area + Inner curved surface area = 1056
⇒ 2πRh + 2πrh = 1056
⇒ 2πh (R + r) = 1056
22
⇒ 2 × × 21(R + r) = 1056
7

1056×7
⇒ R+r =
2×22×21

⇒ R + r = 8 … (i)

Volume of material in it = 1056 cm3

⇒ πR2h - πr2h = 1056
⇒ πh (R2 - r2) = 1056
22 2 2
⇒ × 21 (R − r ) = 1056
7

2 2 1056×7
⇒ R −r =
22×21

⇒ (R + r)(R-r) = 16
⇒ 8 × (R - r) = 16
⇒ R - r = 2 ....(ii)
Adding (i) and (ii) , we get
2R = 10 ⇒ R = 5 cm
⇒5-r=2
⇒ r = 3 cm
∴ Internal radius = 3 cm and External radius = 5 cm
10. The difference between the outer curved surface area and the inner curved
surface area of a hollow cylinder is 352 cm2. If its height is 28 cm and the
volume of material in it is 704 cm3;find its external curved surface area.
Ans. : Let R and r be the outer and inner radii of hollow mwtallic cylinder.
Let h be the height of the metallic cylinder.
It is given that
Outer curved surface area - Inner curved surface area = 352
⇒ 2πRh - 2πrh = 352
⇒ 2πh (R - r) = 352
22
⇒ 2 × × 28(R − r) = 352
7

352×7
⇒ R−r =
2×22×28

⇒ R - r = 2 ...(i)
Volume of material in it = 704 cm3
⇒ πR2h - π r2h = 704
⇒ πh (R2 - r2) = 704
22 2 2
⇒ × 28 (R − r ) = 704
7

2 2 704×7
⇒ R −r =
22×28

⇒ (R + r)(R-r) = 8
⇒ (R + r) × 2 = 8
⇒ R + r = 4 ...(ii)
Adding (i) and (ii) we get
2R = 6 ⇒ R = 3 cm
∴ External curved surface area = 2πRh
22 2
= 2 × × 3 × 28 = 528c m
