Properties of gas LP

This document is a lesson plan for a Grade 10 science class focusing on the properties of gases, including their volume, pressure, mass, and temperature. The plan outlines objectives, subject matter, preliminary activities, and assessment methods, aiming for students to achieve 85% proficiency in understanding gas behavior. It includes interactive activities and simulations to enhance learning and application of the kinetic molecular theory.

Lesson Plan in Grade 10

Content Standard: The learners should demonstrate an understanding of how gases behave based in motion
and relative distances between gas particles.

Most Essential Learning Competency: The learners should be able to investigate the relationship between:
1.1 volume and pressure at constant temperature of a gas.
1.2 Volume and temperature at constant pressure of a gas.
1.3 Explains the relationship using the kinetic molecular theory.
(S9MT-IIj-20).

I. Objectives
Specifically, at the end of a 45-minute discussion, the learners are expected to do the following with 85%
proficiency:
A. Identify the properties of a gas;

II. Subject matter

Topic: Properties of a gas

References: Science G10 Learners’ Material pp.351-393
Materials: Power point, projector, laptop, markers, pictures, Whiteboard, whiteboard marker
Time: 45 minutes

III. Preliminary Activities

Prayer
Greetings
Checking attendance
Classroom rules
Review

REVIEW 1. What are the three states of matter?

2. How do you compare the states of matter in terms of the arrangement of their
molecules?
3. How about the molecules’ movement?
MOTIVATION
The teacher will ask the students what is common among the pictures.

ACTIVITY Reviewing the student’s prior knowledge by a simple activity “4 pics- 1 word”. The
teacher will flash pictures in which students will guess the term. This activity will also
open opportunity for the students to unlock difficult terms related to the lesson.
Strategy 1: The students will be grouped into five and be given activity sheets each. The
goal is to unlock the term and to write educated guesses towards the terms they will guess
correctly.
Strategy 2: After answering in the answer sheet, one representative of the group will
present their answers to the class. The first group to present will earn a point that will be
added to the quiz.
The following are the terms to be guessed and unlocked:
MASS - Gases have indefinite shapes and size, and fit the shape and size of their container
VOLUME - Volume is the amount of space occupied by a gas
TEMPERATURE - Temperature is the measure of the coldness or hotness of the gas.
PRESSURE - Pressure is the force applied by the gas particles per unit area.

ANALYSIS Based on your educated guesses how do these terms relate to each other?
*These are all properties of gas

2. Are all these properties observable and exhibited in the natural world?
*Yes, from the provided scenarios’
ABSTRACTION The teacher will discuss the properties of gases such as mass, volume, pressure, and
temperature.

Gases have indefinite shapes and volume, and fit the shape and size of their
container.
Gases have volume, mass, pressure, and temperature.
Density quantity of matter packed into a unit volume of material
Volume is the amount of space occupied by a gas.
Temperature is the measure of the coldness or hotness of the gas.
Pressure is the force applied by the gas particles per unit area.

Units of measure and their equivalents:

VOLUME:
1 ml = 1 cm3
1 m3 = 1000 L
PRESSURE:
1 atm = 760 mmHg = 76 cmHg = 760 torr = 101325 Pa = 14.7 psi
TEMPERATURE:
K = C + 273.15
C = K - 273.15
APPLICATION The teacher will flash a gas simulator to the screen this is for the students to see the actual
properties of gases.

Processing question:
1. What happened to the gas particles when we increase the temperature? How does
this affect the pressure?
2. How do gas particles behave when the volume of the container changes?
3. How does increasing the number of gas particles affect the pressure inside the
container?
4. How do the relationships observed in the simulation relate to real-world
phenomena like balloons and car tires?
5. Based on the simulation, why is a pressure cooker dangerous to use?

ASSESSMENT Directions: Identify the properties of gases (volume, pressure, mass, and temperature)
manifested in each of the following situations. Write your answers in the column provided.
You can put one or more properties of gas.

Situation Properties of gas

1. A rising hot air balloon.
2. Blowing up a balloon.
3. An aerosol can when heated eventually explode
4. Pumping a car tire.
5. Pushing the plunger of a syringe with fingers pressed
against the end of the syringe.

ASSIGNMENT Look around your house, then list down all the scenario in which the properties of gases
are exhibited.
