4/29/11 Theatre
In the past four years at Repertory Company High School for Theatre Arts, I have been able to develop many skills that have led to the betterment of myself as an artist. These skills will aid in the completion of a project that I will undertake over the next few weeks; the writing and directing of a short scene based on a research paper that I completed this spring. My classes at Repertory have helped me to gain knowledge that will aid in the pursuit of this endeavor, not only in those specifically devoted to theatre. The starting point of this project began with a research paper on a socially motivated issue, which in my case is focused the social constraints imposed on mental patients. In my acting and english classes last year, I was required to do a project on the social climate of the Vietnam War era and how this was reflected in the Broadway musical Hair by James Rado and Gerome Ragni. This project was culminated in the writing and performance of a monologue delivered from the viewpoint of someone affected by the war. This past project definitely prepared me for the one I am completing this year. This year my English class has been primarily focused on playwriting, which will be very useful in the composition of my scene. I havent had much experience in directing besides a class project in sophomore year in which the entire class collaborated on an original play and I was one of three lead directors. This experience helped me to gain patience when working with actors and to develop vision when blocking and staging a scene. My strengths in the area of theatre are mostly concentrated in those required of an actress, though some do reach into the area of playwriting and directing as well. I often find it very easy to communicate my vision when writing, as I usually have a very clear and perfected idea to get across. However when it comes to directing, I can tend to be a perfectionist and get very frustrated when I dont feel that my vision is being carried out exactly. I also tend to doubt my own abilities and get stuck on any small aspect that I believe I can improve on. I hope that through practice I will be able to improve on these shortcomings. My goals for this project are as follows. I wish to expand my abilities as a performing artist, beyond the realm of acting and into those of writing
and directing. I hope to grow as an artist and not only see past my weaknesses, but improve upon them as well. I also hope to prepare myself for a future career in theatre, wherein I will have to give and take criticism from peers. The scene writing and performing aspect of this project has largely become a group effort, which is realistic towards the theatre world. I hope that this project will aid in my betterment as not only an artist and a student, but as a person in general.
