chapter 2- problems

The document contains problems related to statics, focusing on the determination of resultant forces, their magnitudes, and directions using vector components. It includes calculations for forces acting on various points, position vectors, and the resolution of forces into Cartesian components. Additionally, it discusses the method for expressing forces as Cartesian vectors and finding their resultant forces.

Chapter 2

Problems

Iqbal Marie
The end of the boom O is subjected to three concurrent and coplanar forces.
Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force.

(FR)x = -400 + 250 sin 45 - 200( 4/5) = -383.2 N

(FR)y = 250 cos 45 + 200 ( 3/5) = 296.8 N

determine the magnitude of the resultant force acting on the eyebolt and its direction
measured clockwise from the positive x axis.

=600 N

=30
Q.1 (5 points) Resolve the force of 450 N into components along
members CA and BA, and determine the magnitude of each component
Express F as cartesian Vector

Fz =750 sin 45

F’ =750 cos 45

Fx =750 cos 45 cos 60

F = {750 cos 45 cos 60i - 750 cos 45 sin 60 j+ 750 sin 45 k} N

Q.2 (5 points). Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force
Find the resultant force in cartesian vector
If FR = {-100 k} N
Determine the magnitude and coordinate direction angles of F2.
If the cord AB is 7.5 m long, determine the coordinate position +z of point B
Two forces act on the hook shown. Specify the magnitude
of F2 and its coordinate direction angles so that the resultant force FR
acts along the positive y axis and has a magnitude of 800 N.
UA

F = {750 cos 45 cos 60i - 750 cos 45 sin 60 j+ 750 sin 45 k} N

2.7 Position Vectors Find rAB and rBA

A position vector r is defined as a fixed vector (6,-1,4)

which locates a point in space relative to another point.

rBA
rAB

(4,2,-6)

rAB = (6-4)i + (-1-2)j + (4- -6)k = 2i -3j +10k

rBA = (4-6)i + (2- -1)j + (-6 -4)k = -2i +3j -10k

Determine the length of AB and its direction
(-2,2, 3)

rAB = {-3i +2j +6k} m

Length of AB
rAB
𝑟𝐴𝐵 = 32 + 22 + 62 = 7𝑚

𝑟ҧ 3 2 6 (1,0,-3)
Unit vector = = −7𝑖 + 7𝑗 + 7𝑘
𝑟

Direction
 =cos -1 (-3/7) = 115 
 = cos -1 ( 2/7) = 73.4 
 = = cos -1 ( 6/7) = 31.0 
2.8 Force Vector Directed Along a Line

In many cases, the direction of a force is defined by the coordinates of two points along its
line of action.

1. Form a position vector r along the line of action of force

2. Find the corresponding unit vector u = r/r that defines the direction of the line
3. Multiply the unit vector by the magnitude of the force z
(xB, yB ,zB)
F = F⋅u = F (r/r) B

u
A y
F
(xA, yA ,z A)

x
Express F as a Cartesian vector.

F = F⋅u = F (r/r)

(-4 sin 30 , 4 cos30, 3)

UAB
Determine the resultant force acting at A as cartesian vector.
