INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Procrastination is a well-known phenomenon that can interfere with effectiveness

and, to a greater extent, the quality of one’s life. This depends on the area in which

procrastination manifests: academic procrastination or neurotic indecisiveness. Chronic

procrastinators experience difficulties in every aspect of their lives due to their inability

to make timely decisions, leading to significant time lost through indecisiveness.

However, this research paper focuses specifically on academic procrastination. It is

presumed that procrastination has a negative relationship with academic achievement.

Time management is the deliberate process of organizing and controlling how

time is allocated to different tasks to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity.

It requires balancing multiple responsibilities, including work, academics, social life,

family, hobbies, and personal interests, within limited time constraints. By mastering

time management, individuals can prioritize tasks and complete them at their

convenience. Various skills, strategies, and tools help ensure that projects, activities,

and goals are accomplished within set deadlines. While initially associated with

business and professional settings, time management has evolved to include personal

activities, utilizing structured systems of methods, tools, and techniques.

Students often lead busy and stressful lives due to their academic

responsibilities, such as attending classes, completing assignments, and studying for

exams. In addition, they must maintain a daily routine and lifestyle that creates a
balance between academics and extracurricular activities. However, managing all these

tasks simultaneously can be overwhelming. This is where strong time management

skills become essential. Students must adopt effective approaches and strategies to

enhance their productivity. Acquiring time management skills allows students to plan

and prioritize upcoming assignments and activities, keeping them organized and helping

to prevent procrastination. Ultimately, this leads to academic success (Razali et al.,

2018).

All students experience procrastination at some point. Whether postponing a

project until the last minute or waiting to study for an exam the night before,

procrastination can result in poor academic performance and negative emotional

consequences, such as anxiety, stress, and frustration (Saplavska & Jerkunkova,

2018). Many students struggle to balance their time due to various obstacles that hinder

their ability to implement effective time management strategies. The reality is that time

management is a matter of will and prioritization. Boncales (2019) conducted a study on

Senior High School students at Mahayag National High School, Bohol, and found that

the top causes of procrastination were pressure, distractions from pleasurable activities

(e.g., social media, television, and sleep), and complex tasks, leading to delayed

schoolwork and lack of sleep.

Here at Cabalitian National High School, the researchers recognize the

relevance of this topic, particularly regarding project and requirement submission. The

researchers themselves have experienced procrastination. The researchers aim to help

others, most of all the students to manage their time well and increase their academic

achievements.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the effects of procrastination on the academic

performance of students at Cabalitian National High School.

The researchers will seek to answer the following questions:

 What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

A) Age

B) Grade level

C) Gender

 What are the causes of procrastination?

 What are the effects of procrastination on students' academic performance?

 What time management strategies can be implemented to reduce procrastination

and improve students' academic performance?

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the effects of procrastination on the academic

performance of students at Cabalitian National High School.

The respondents are limited to 10 students per grade level. Here at Cabalitian

National High School, there are 177 students. In total, the researchers have 60

respondents which is 33% of the total population of CNHS.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to determine the effects of procrastination on the academic

performance of students at Cabalitian National High School. The findings of this study

will benefit the following:

Students. This study will help students recognize the importance of time

management and encourage them to use their time effectively. It will introduce them to

strategies for avoiding procrastination and improving their academic achievements.

Understanding the benefits of time management will enhance their productivity and

enable them to set priorities.

Parents. This study will reassure parents that their children’s time is being

utilized efficiently. It will help alleviate concerns about their children's academic

performance and achievements.

School. This study will contribute to developing academically competitive and

disciplined students. By fostering an awareness of time management, students will be

more likely to submit their requirements and projects on time. This will also ease the

concerns of the teachers regarding the computation of the grades of the students.

Researchers. This study will also benefit the researchers by reinforcing the

importance of time management, helping them allocate their time wisely, and preventing

last-minute panic when completing academic requirements and projects. Understanding

time management will enhance their punctuality and contribute to their academic

success.
Definition of Terms

The following essential terms are the words mentioned in the study are defined to

enhance the understanding of the readers of this study:

Academic achievement. It refers to a specific level of accomplishment in school

courses, as measured by teachers or standardized tests. These evaluations provide a

structured scale to assess student performance in various subjects.

Academic performance. It is the extent to which pre-determined educational

goals are achieved. This can be assessed through continuous evaluation (e.g.,

assignments) or final examinations, both of which have advantages and disadvantages

(Ward, Murray-Ward, & Stoker).

Procrastination. It is the act of delaying or postponing tasks that should be

completed.

Time management. It refers to the process of planning and exercising conscious

control over the time spent on specific activities.

Time management system. It refers to a set of standardized tools and

techniques designed to maximize productivity and improve personal organization.
