CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Procrastination can be defined as purposely deferring a particular task to a later time,

which may be result in some negative effects such as increasing stress to individuals.

Procrastination is certainly not a new phenomenon. It has existed for much of history and

continues to thrive in the modern era. The problem of procrastination affects everyone in the

general population and it does not matter if you are adults or teenagers. Besides that, most

researches have been indicated that procrastination is consistently linked to various

maladaptive cognitions and behaviors which consume individuals’ productive life (Yun,

2013).

Procrastination is also one of the most common and unpleasant trait of the Filipinos.

The Mañana Habit has existed since the Spanish colonization. It started when the Spanish

dubbed the Filipinos as “Lazy workers” and is one of the reasons why the folklore “Juan

Tamad” was created. Filipino habit is a negative attitude where they tend to say “Mamaya

Na” in the things they think is difficult so they prioritize it less. As time management and

productivity are the main keys in an academic performance, then procrastination can be one

of the most common problem of a student. Procrastination in academic situations is a very

common phenomena.( Lay, Pychyl, Ferrari (2004).

According to Kandemir (2014), academic procrastination is a behavior that is fairly

frequent among students; as a result, students are unable to demonstrate their true abilities

during the learning process and fail. Many causes of academic procrastination have been
identified by various studies, including poor classroom performance, exam stress and anxiety,

low achievement (Howell and Watson, 2007), poor time management, low self-efficiency,

discontentment with the difficulty of tasks (Alexander & Onwuegbuzie, 2007), and irrational

beliefs based on being unable to advance (Kagan et al., 2010). Students that procrastinate find

it difficult to apply their true abilities to the learning process and ultimately fail (Kagan et al.,

2010).

The researchers conduct this study to determine the effect of Procrastination on the

academic performance of HUMSS 12 student of Tabango Senior High School.

Procrastination. This term is mutual phenomena in academic perspectives,

particularly in atmospheres where students have to meet targets for project accomplishment,

which needs student’s concentration and time. ( Geri,& Gafn 2010).

Time Management. Time management is the ability to use one’s time effectively or

productively especially at work.

Mañana Habit. a behavior of Filipino to procrastinate or delay a certain task.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY

This chapter discuss the substantial findings of local and foreign literature and studies

which are related to these studies. The researchers selected and reviewed relevant portions of

the materials to guide and support them and get the reliability and validity of the conducted

present study.

Related Literature

Foreign Source

Procrastinate is a word meant, delaying from the context. Procrastinating is an act of

delaying that you don’t want to do. Procrastinating is also the avoidance of doing a task that

is needed to accomplish. It is also the practice of doing more enjoyable things than the

important or urgent tasks or putting off impending task to a later time. Procrastination takes

time or takes place until the” last minute” before the given deadline. People procrastinate

cause of personal issues, health issues, home issues or in academic problem or obligations.

Procrastination can also lead to feeling of being guilt, inadequacy, depression and self-doubt.

(Hooda, M., (2016).

According to Oxford English dictionary, students knows that procrastination could

lead to poorer academic performance, students rarely try to at least overcome procrastination

and instead claim that pressure to perform enables them to complete the assignments. As

such procrastination is also defined as differing action due to indecisiveness or without good

reason. Academic procrastination has always been considered as a reason for poor academic

performance especially among students who are academically capable which is shown in a

study done by Onwuegbuzie and Jiao (2000).

Students often assume that projects or certain tasks won’t take as long to finish as

they really will, would then can lead to a false sense of security when they think that they still

have plenty of time to complete these tasks. One of the biggest factors that contributes to

procrastination is the idea that we have to feel inspired or motivated to work on a task at a

particular moment. (Cherry, K. (2019). “The Psychology of Procrastination”)

Plaxton (2017) reported that many students treated procrastination as the worst

hindrance when managing their time because they would prioritize the thing they revel in

over their work. Some students have so many schedules, including school, homework,

household chores, social life, and/or other extracurricular activities. Because of this,

homework and school works are frequently neglected, and they will do something more

enjoyable to allow them to have extra freedom in the rest of their schedule.

However, Swanson (2016) reported that almost all of the researchers have considered

procrastination largely as a failure of self-regulation, like terrible behaviors that have to do

with a lack of self-control, such as overeating, and gambling problem, or overspending. Even

though it is no longer counted as being lazy or having poor time management, many clever

people who are procrastinating still become successful.

Local source

Procrastination is human behavior of delaying tasks, job and/ or actions for whatever

reason for later time. Apparently, it is a way of concealing up anxiety connected with starting

up or finishing the task. It is a behavior or delaying tasks despite knowing that there would be

a negative outcome of delay. (Olea, M.T. and Olea, A.N., (2014), “Perceptiveness and Sense

Impression of Procrastination across Correlates”)

(Solomon & Rothblum, 1984) a recent study states that procrastination can be

considered as behavioral, affective and cognitive which could be caused by an individual’s

fear to fail and averseness. It was found that some individuals may procrastination for some

various reasons. It was observed that individuals tend to experience problems in lack of

motivation and time management to finish a task or to concentrate in a work. These problems

can hinder a person to achieve their academic goals. (Mandap, C,M.,(2016).

However Brownlow & Reasinger,( 2000),a possible factor that may affect students’

academic performance is the Filipino Mañana Habit or what is commonly known as

procrastination. One of the most disturbing and cancerous phenomena in the academic setting

is procrastination. Academic procrastinators are infamous for self-handicapping, in which

students may associate their failures in their tasks due to their lack of studying, rather than

their own intellectual capacity. Procrastination is commonly envisioned maladaptive because

of its connection to failure of doing one’s goal. (Tarin, C.A., and Rio, M.C., (2015).

Procrastination is done by people who has problems regarding motivations, avoiding

their tasks or projects, and cramming in the last minute. Procrastinators prefer to do enjoyable

things that would suit their moods such us browsing the net, playing video games, or

something that they think is something relevant or needed to be done. (“Do It Now, Not

Later: How to Overcome Procrastination”, 2016)

(Gocotano, P.J., (2018). “Procrastination at its Peak”) Procrastination is a justification

of putting things off. It is the reason why one’s idea don’t just come freely as it did before. As

we procrastinate we tend to think of other things instead of focusing on a task that is needed

to be done. Some associated it to laziness yet it is a choice. The more you procrastinate, the

harder it is to control yourself. As the deadline comes nearer, the quality of the works lessens

and stress devours you.

Foreign Studies

Every people postpone a task or assignments that they are supposed to perform.

Although this is often to experience as very stressful, delaying a given course of action will

result in a psychological major suffering. However, for some individuals, postponing that is

needed to be done can be a very problem to every one especially in students and it is

persistent behavioral pattern that interferes with their daily life. (Rozental, A. and Carlbring,

P. (2014).

Past researchers (Mann, 2016) have also identified two types of procrastination:,

which can be defined as the delay of the completion of tasks, and decisional procrastination,

which is concerned with postponing decision-making within some specific period. While the

former focuses on how people perform tasks in different life situations, the latter appears to

indicate how they approach their decision-making processes. The present study focuses

mainly on behavioral procrastination. Therefore, people naturally choose the path of least

resistance and prefer to work on small tasks that do not require as much time, planning,

and/or energy as the bigger tasks (Ferrari,2010).Clearly, procrastination has a negative impact

on an individual, but the actual profile of a person who procrastinates varies. Thus, due to the

wide range of characteristics, there may be no typical profile of academic trait

procrastinators, but there are some similarities that occur.

The American Psychological Association had written an article that stated, ‘…

students worry about performing incompetently or fear their success may increase others’

expectations of them’ (Novotney, 2010). In the survey done by this association, the

participants were asked whether they think that the fear of success is the cause of their

procrastination. The thought of never being good enough can drive some student to delay
their work. This can also lead to low grades and cause them to feel even more demotivated

even further. In a research study carried out by Grabmeier (2002) at Ohio State University, it

was discovered that ‘high procrastinators suffer more stress and anxiety than other students

do.” College students are commonly associated with stress and anxiety.

According to Oppong, T.(2017).Procrastination has a bad reputation. Everyone is

familiar with this kind of phenomenon since they have already encountered it. This often

leads disappointment, shame, and anxiety. It is negative to everyone, but sometimes it can

favor you. There are people called active procrastinators, these kind of procrastinators work

better under pressure. They are almost comfortable with fear and feel challenged by

approaching deadlines as they deliberately delay their tasks. However, this method doesn’t

apply to what we call passive procrastinators. These kind of procrastinators are the exact

opposite, they easily get anxious which results to overthinking and not getting a job

done.“According To Research, Procrastinating Can Boost Your Creativity”)

Local studies

According to Revilla, J.,(2017) there are many things or consequences in our daily life

especially to every students. Despite of having too many projects, paper works or activities.

Students often shows struggles towards self-regulatory failure that is not entirely understood.

Students also misunderstood some things they need to do and came up laying their hands

down when it comes in doing a task or project. Some students prioritize what they think is

easier or something they just want. This is lazy at first and cramming on every possible way.

Another blog in the internet with a title of “Saka na, bukas na: Pinoy procrastination”

asks if we, the Filipinos, ever wondered how the timeless Virtue „Filipino time‟ originated?

Do we know why did the grasshopper starved to death in the story of “The ant and the

grasshopper”? Do we also know why the hare lost. The race against the turtle? Based on this

blog, it is because of the act of procrastination. The Filipino way of saying it is “saka na lang”

which is clearly The mañana habit we inherited from our conqueror centuries ago. If we will

look into reality, procrastinating is a thief of time. Time is the only thing in this world that all

of us can lose and never regain. By procrastinating, an individual is at risk of wasting and

killing the time. Unfortunately, when the individual realizes this fact, he has already run out

of time. He/she might try not to give up by saying the famous line “bahala na” and hoping

that there would be a “later”. The conflict is that „later‟ usually ends up with a “never.”

METHODOLOGY

In this chapter presents a description of the research design, respondents of the study

and sample size determination, Sampling design and technique, Research locale, Research

instrument, Data gathering procedure, Data processing procedure, and statistical tools are

used.

Research design

This study will utilize quantitative method of research. The researchers chose a

descriptive-correlational research design because it best served to answer the questions and

purposes of the study.

The survey research is a group of people studied by collecting and analyzing data

from only a selected people considered to be a representative of the entire group. In other

words, only a part of the population of the specific place that will surveying. In addition,

survey research addresses public opinion or individual characteristics through the use of

questionnaires that respondents complete.

Research Respondents

The respondents of the study are the HUMSS 12 Student of Tabango Senior High

school. All of these participants was selected through stratified random sampling. The sample

size can be determined through the used of SLOVIN’S Formula:

n=N/(1+Ne²)

Where in we calculate the sample size (n) given the population size (N) and a margin of error

(e).
The total number of sample will be 165 and the sample size of each stratum will be seen

below:

Sampling Design and Technique

The sampling design and technique approach that will be used to choose the

Respondents to gather information and answers the researcher’s question is stratified random

sampling. It begins by segmenting a population to a group with comparable characteristics.

Then from each group, random sample is picked. The strategy was employed in this survey

to ensure the different elements of the population are represented equally, particularly the

opinion of student in each section.

Research locale

Figure 2. Map of Tabango Senior High School

Here is the photo of the Tabango Senior High School in St. Peter Drive, Poblacion,

Tabango, Leyte, where we conducted our study.

Research Instrument

The questionnaires were the primary research instrument in this study. To obtain

quantitative information, the researcher created self-administered questionnaires for the data

collection process. The questionnaire was designed in such a way that responders will find it

simple to complete.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers personally hand out the questionnaires to the respondents and had given clear

instructions on how to answer the questions, through the help of the teacher. The respondents

had answered the questionnaire at their free and convenient time and place within the school

campus.
The questionnaires were recollected personally by the researchers after they answer the

questionnaires

Statistical tools

To interpret the gathered data, the researchers will use the following:

In the interpretation and analysis of data, weighted mean was used to answer problem no.1

which is the academic procrastination of the respondents. The frequency count and

percentage was used to answer problem no.2 which was academic performance of the

respondents. Pearson r correlational was used to answer problemno.3, it was useful to

determine the significant relationship between academic procrastination and academic

performance of the respondent.

The researchers will use particular tool in order to answer the problem raised in the study

which is the Likert Scale:

academic performance indicated a ‘Very Satisfactory’. And there is relationship between

Procrastination and Academic Performance of HUMSS 12 student of Tabango Senior High

School enrolled during the school year 2022- 2023.

RECOMMENDATION

1. Time Management Skills: Educational institutions should focus on providing students

with effective time management skills and strategies to minimize procrastination. This

can include workshops, seminars, or incorporating time management techniques into

the curriculum.

2. Awareness and Counseling: Schools and universities should increase awareness about

the negative consequences of procrastination and offer counseling services to help

students overcome procrastination tendencies. This can be done through informative

campaigns, individual or group counseling sessions, and the availability of resources

for self-help.

3. Break Down Tasks: Encouraging students to break down complex tasks into smaller,

manageable parts can help alleviate the overwhelming feeling that often leads to

procrastination. By breaking tasks into smaller steps, students may feel more

motivated to start and complete their assignments in a timely manner.
