INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

This paper consists of two sections; section A and Section B.

Answer ALL questions in Section A and B

Maximum marks for each part of a question are as shown.

Candidates should answer the questions in English

SECTION A: (40 MARKS)

Attempt ALL the questions in this section

1. Highlight the principle of the polygon of forces. (2 Marks)

2. State Newton’s first law of motion. (2 Marks)

3.a) Momentum is a common term applied to forces. Define the term momentum (2 Marks)

b) Derive how momentum is measured. (2 Marks)

4. A force is fully defined by three factors. Name these THREE factors; (3 Marks)

5. State the parallelogram of forces rule. (2 Marks)

6.a) By use of sketch, explain the term ‘friction’ (4 Marks)

b) List FOUR effects of friction. (4 Marks)

7.a) Define the term simple machine. (2 Marks)

b) List FOUR examples of simple machines. (4 Marks)

8. Give THREE reasons why the efficiency of a machine can never be 100%. (3 Marks)

9. Highlight THREE modes of heat transfer. (3 Marks)

10. List THREE dimensional quantities. (3 Marks)

11. List FOUR types of clearances in a motor vehicle. (4 Marks)

SECTION B: (60 MARKS)

Attempt any THREE questions in this section

12.

a) State Newton’s second law of motion. (2 Marks)

b) A motor vehicle of mass 2.1 tonnes is travelling with a uniform velocity of 72 km/h down

a local road; calculate the momentum of the vehicle. (5 Marks)

c) A vehicle has a force of 1.5 kN acting on it due to the engine, and the acceleration

produced is 1.2m/s. Calculate the mass of the vehicle. (7 Marks)

d) A ball of mass 50 g is moving with a velocity of 4 m/s when it strikes a stationary ball of

mass 25 g. The velocity of the 50 g ball after impact is 2.5 m/s in the same direction as

before impact. Determine the velocity of the 25 g ball after impact. (6 Marks)

13.

a) State the principle of moments. (2 Marks)

b) A uniform horizontal structure is supported on a fulcrum and then loaded as shown below

200N 300N W 100N

0.1M 0.25M

0.3M 0.4M

Ignoring the mass of the lever,

i.Calculate the magnitude of the load W required to maintain equilibrium. (8 Marks)

ii. The magnitude of the reaction R at the support (3 Marks)

c) Assuming the mass of the lever is equivalent to a load of 100N, calculate the magnitude

of load W required for lever to be in equilibrium. (4 Marks)

d) Determine the new reaction R at the support. (3 Marks)

14. a) State Hooke’s law. (2 Marks)

b) A helical spring carrying a load of 500N is compressed by 20 mm. Calculate the load

required to compress it by 8 mm. (4 Marks)

c) A handbrake has an advantage of 8:1. The handbrake cable has an initial length of 2 m and

a cross-sectional area of 20 mm2. Determine:

i) The stress in the cable when the driver applies a force of 100 N to the handbrake. (7 Marks)

ii) The strain in the cable when it is extended by 0.4 mm. (4 Marks)

iii) The modulus of elasticity for the material of the cable. (3 Marks)

15. The bucket of cement of mass 40kg is tied to the end of a rope connected to a hoist.

a) Calculate tension in a rope when:

i) Bucket is suspended but stationary

ii)Bucket is hoisted vertically downwards with uniform acceleration of 0.4m/s2

iii) Bucket is lowered vertically downwards with uniform acceleration of 1.4m/s2

(9 Marks)

b) A harvesting machine has a cutting stroke of 2 m and the stroke takes 4 seconds. If the

constant resistance to the cutting tool is 900 N, calculate for each cutting stroke;

i) The power consumed at the tool point, and

ii) The power input to the system if the efficiency of the system is 75%.

(6 Marks)

c) Derive the kinetic energy equation (5 Marks)
